The Ballie Lodges network of boutique hotels sets itself a high and unwavering standard. As returning guests, we’re delighted to say that Capella Lodge continues to uphold this tradition without missing a beat. We spent four nights and five days at Capella Lodge. Everything was perfect. Our room, the Cataline Suite, was well-appointed. It offered breathtaking views and plenty of privacy. Each day the staff surprised and delighted us with a simple touch that progressively shifted the experience from “as expected” to “exceeding expectations”. Lord Howe Island is a truly magical place. Its scenery and lifestyle are everything its internet images suggest – and then some. Capella Lodge proved the same in equal measure. From the moment Libby collected us from the airport, we felt part of an extended island family – but not in a clinical or automatronic manner that’s all too common in so many upmarket establishments. The lodge is superb. It offers stunning views toward the island's two highest peaks, Mount Gower and Mount Lidgbird. Executive Chef, Dennis Tierney, doesn’t disappoint. The food was consistently good. Breakfast was filled with plenty of tasty options. Dinner was always a memorable dining experience. We also enjoyed lunch one afternoon - the classic lunch menu didn’t skimp on taste, quality, or presentation. By chance, we also arrived on the same day the lodge was hosting its once-a-week degustation menu. Each course was a culinary treat to behold. A few clever presentation techniques we noted have since made their way into our own dinner parties back home. Libby, Mark and Sally really were the perfect hosts. Nothing was ever too much trouble. Each day they offered suggestions for making our stay more memorable – or helped us create another special moment. For example, on our first day, we were offered complimentary use of one of the lodge’s two golf carts. This made it easy to explore the entire island, gain our bearing and plan our favourite places for a more immersive return visit. This included returning to Ned’s Beach for a BBQ picnic. The hotel organized a delicious BBQ pack, complete with cooking tools, meat, seafood and salads, to be delivered to the beach’s pavilion while we climbed Kim’s Lookout. If you've never been to Lord Howe Island - you must go. If you've never tried Ballie Lodges then you must try Capella Lodge. You won't be disappointed.
