Plaifah Resort Ubon

It was a bit of hassle for me getting tot his place independently. I ended up getting expensive taxis there and back - 2,700B from Ubon there, and 2,000B on the return to Kong Chiam. I stopped for a visit at Pha Taem on the way there, and Sao Chaleang and the two coloured river on the way back. The return price would have been the same including a further stop, so the ideal would have been to get a bus there and taxi back. There is apparently one bus a day that goes up the main road close to the hotel, but on the return it wasn't due until late afternoon so didn't mesh with my plans. The bungalow rooms are large and comfortable. Each has a shady balcony with a couple of trees planted in front, as otherwise the view is just of the road through the interior of the property. Each has a parking space. There are a coupe of niggles like no bedside tables and no sockets by the bed, but nothing major. The air con works well. For a resort, there's little to do on the property itself, but the location makes it good for a few activities. Despite bike hire being mentioned as one of the things they offered, clearly no one had asked for a long time as the bikes had to be taken away and sorted before I could use one. Still, it turned up in good shape about half an hour after I asked for it, and was actually a decent multi-speed bike. I cycled to Sam Phan Bok which took about half an hour. It does involve riding on the main road, but there's a decently sized edge piece where the mopeds ride that mean it's not too scary even though large lorries do come past relatively frequently. If you turn right out of the property, the junction with the main road is about 10 minutes' walk away. Just before that there's a small mini market and restaurant (rather incongruously, a place specialising in international cuisine like pizza and steak. The menu's all in Thai, but the owner speaks English). There's another shop and some local food places at the road junction. If you turn left from the resort, it's a 1 mile walk through a village to a nice view of the river (it looks like you can get boat trips there) and a couple of eating places. The food in the resort is good, and they kindly adapted a couple of things to make them meat free for me. They allowed me to refill my water from the urn in the restaurant so I didn't have to use any of the bottled water provided. On one night I was there, a large school party was staying which jammed up the internet, but after they'd left the wifi was good.
