Mercure Winchester Wessex Hotel

We’ve just completed 3 nights at the Mercury Winchester. We chose the hotel as it was the cheapest hotel with closest proximity to the city centre. As someone with the mantra “ I spend more time in the city than I do the hotel” I was not expecting the Ritz. Location is 10/10, within 100yds you are in the high street and right at the beginning of the local market when it is on. It’s worth noting that when the market is happening they close one of the main roads leading to the hotel so you would have to use a back route. Our Sat Nav took us down the road the market takes place so would have been a problem had it been market day. The hotel itself is tired and our “privilege room” was plentiful with stained carpets & even child pen scrawl on the wall. That aside the TV was large & bed & bathroom clean. We had a view of the cathedral & a mini fridge stocked with a couple of bottles of water & bottles of Pepsi. Breakfast was satisfactory but nothing special. The staff throughout our stay were very nice and we had no issues. Parking isn’t great, the small covered car park is a little tight to manoeuvre & at £15 per day very expensive. In summary if we came back to Winchester we certainly wouldn’t discount the Mercure as an option but it would be dependent on whether we could get a better price elsewhere.

My husband and I enjoy our visits to this lovely, characterful pub. The only comment I wanted to make was about the desserts, that although presented beautifully, I don’t find as satisfying as last year. I think the new ‘buffalo?’ Ice-cream is too light and lacking in substance. It feels more like a diet option, I understand it would appeal to some. The chocolate torte-like dessert tasted nice but was too hard to get the spoon through the lower section without it shooting off the plate. Sticky toffee pudding with sautéed banana was delicious but again, a different option to the ice-cream that feels like sorbet would be great. The puddings are expensive but of high quality, but one expects to feel satisfied and full after one. The peaches were delicious but again the ice-cream too light and ultimately unfulfilling.

The room was clean and the hotel easy to get to, and the staff friendly and approachable, a great choice for visiting nearby Winchester. It was quiet and peaceful and we weren't disturbed by other guests. The shower was strong and hot and it was nice to have the toiletries. The WiFi was strong. Our only complaint was that the bed was hard and we both had backaches in the morning but these quickly went. Also there were some cobwebs at the top of the room, luckily no spiders, but could do with a hoover up there!

Mengmeng's trip to the UK this time is a self-driving tour, so we went to some very niche attractions and checked in a very special five-star manor hotel. One of my favorite hotels is the Lanstern Hotel next to Southampton. The quaint manor really has the sense of being a movie blockbuster, and bicycles can be rented, and then take a circle in the surrounding forest. It feels great! ⛄⛄⛄ The coordinates of the hotel are SO212LT. It is about 7 minutes drive to Winchester Cathedral and about 25 minutes drive to Southampton. The entire hotel was converted into a 17th-century manor. So the biggest feature is that it is particularly large. According to the steward, it covers 63 acres! It took us more than half an hour to shuttle through the hotel's corridors without even finishing. In addition, the hotel was hung with oil paintings of the Louis period, and a lot of antique furniture was placed. So I often watch European and American novels and movies always feel a little bit cold. Coupled with the surrounding forest, unknown birds such as cuckoos have been calling, adding a little fear. ⛄⛄⛄ The environment is really beautiful, I feel a little afraid that it is actually my psychological role! In fact, the occupancy rate is particularly high, not only foreigners, but many British people like to live in such a manor hotel! The decoration of the room is very elegant and new, with about 50 rooms. The style of each room is different. Some rooms have a British four-poster bed! The bathtub in the room is also equipped with a TV and a spa. Bath products are also very high-end brands! ⭐⭐⭐ The mascot of the hotel is an owl. This hotel not only has an owl puppet in the room, but the hotel owner really has an owl! You can pay for feeding the owl, and train her to fly to your arm. It's just that Owl Cafe is everywhere in Japan, so we didn't train raptors, and families with children can try it. 🥘🥘🥘 Be sure to boast that the hotel breakfast is really delicious! It was later discovered that this restaurant was an award-winning restaurant, using local produce and herbs and vegetables grown in the hotel's back garden. During our trip to the UK, the breakfast we chose in each hotel was a full English breakfast. But only the black mushrooms in this hotel are particularly thick, probably picked from the nearby forest! Bacon and ham are not too salty. It ’s enough. I ate a CD! Dinner is delicious too! There is also a 24-hour room service. 🌲🌲🌲 The hotel's front yard, backyard, and corridors are particularly suitable for taking photos. There is a tennis court ahead. The parking lot is an English garden. The price of this hotel is really very suitable, five-star service, but the double room only costs 900 yuan, and also includes double breakfast. If you are driving near Winchester, I highly recommend staying here!
