🏯 Baita Temple: A Hilltop Haven Over Lanzhou’s Yellow River
Perched on the northern bank of the Yellow River, Baita Temple (White Pagoda Temple) is one of Lanzhou’s most iconic landmarks. Nestled atop White Pagoda Mountain (Baita Shan), this serene temple offers panoramic views of the city, the winding river, and the surrounding hills—making it a must-visit for history lovers, photographers, and spiritual seekers alike.
📜 History
Baita Temple was originally built during the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368) to commemorate a Tibetan lama of the Sakya sect who died in Lanzhou en route to meet Genghis Khan. The original pagoda collapsed in the late Yuan period and was rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty (Jingtai reign, 1450–1456). It was later expanded in 1715 during the Qing Dynasty, when the temple was renamed Ci’en Temple
The temple complex includes a 17-meter-high white pagoda with seven stories and eight sides, adorned with carved Buddhas and iron bells. It once housed three treasures: an elephant-hide drum, a bronze bell, and a Chinese redbud tree, though only the drum and bell remain today
