Guyang Cave

Guyang Cave is located in the south section of Longmen Mountain in Xishan Grottoes, which was opened in 493 AD. It is the earliest cave in the Longmen Grottoes statue group, the most abundant Buddhist content and the highest calligraphy art.

古阳洞开凿于北魏时,距今已有1500年历史,是龙门石窟中开凿最早的一个石窟.洞内小窟十分多,精巧富丽,是研究北魏石窟艺术的珍贵资料.动内的题记书法质朴古拙,是研究书法史的珍品。 古阳洞高1120厘米,宽727厘米,深1183厘米,是龙门石窟开凿最早、时代延续最长、内容最丰富的一个洞窟,也是北魏皇室贵族发愿造像最为集中的洞窟,洞内四壁及窟顶雕刻各式佛龛,多达1000余个,碑刻题记800多品,是中国石窟中保存造像题记最多的一个洞窟。洞内正壁造一佛二菩萨,主佛高肉髻,面相长圆,身躯较为瘦削,着褒衣博带式袈裟,施禅定印,结跏趺坐于方座上。胁侍菩萨像头戴宝冠,面容清秀,表情文静端庄,姿态优美。 古阳洞内四壁及窟顶佛龛琳琅满目,龛楣、背光等处的雕刻精细繁缛,所表现出的礼佛场面、建筑式样及龛楣装饰等图案纹样极富于变化,完美地展现了当时绘画和雕刻技巧的高超水平。古阳洞内碑刻题记近千品,是中国石窟保存造像铭最多的一座石窟,闻名宇内的魏碑作品“龙门二十品”有十九品出于古阳洞,字形端正大方,气势刚健质朴,结体、用笔在隶楷之间,堪称魏碑精品,以其独特的魅力受到国内外书法爱好者的青睐。清代康有为在对龙门二十品进行了深入细致的研究之后,认为它有十美:“魄力雄强、气势浑穆、笔法跳跃、点画峻厚、意态奇逸、精神飞动、兴趣酣足、骨法洞达、结构天成、血肉丰美。”予以极高的评价。

古阳洞与其他龙山石窟有着明显的区别。释迦牟尼座下是方形累就的座，而别处基本是莲花座。两壁的佛龛整齐而且形式有漏雕的门楣，美丽。而且，据说这些洞龛一排一排的创建于不同时期不同人，却又很整齐。
