National Day 6-day US trip guide: A must-read for lazy travelers
Isabella32 Cook - Bella
To break the routine of my usual office weeks in Brussels, I decided to take some annual leave and travel a bit further this time. Alaska has always been on my list. It was a long journey, and six days is admittedly quite short for the distance, but I tried to keep a steady, comfortable pace.
Here is how I spent my days there:
Day 1: Arrived in Anchorage after a long flight. I took a shuttle straight to the hotel to rest and adjust to the time difference.
Day 2: Spent about four hours walking on the Matanuska Glacier. The scale of the ice is truly impressive. In the evening, we drove up to Cleary Summit and managed to catch our first glimpse of the northern lights.
Day 3: A quieter day. We stopped by the Santa Claus House in the morning, then headed to Chena Hot Springs. Spending the afternoon in the hot outdoor water while the air was freezing was the highlight of the trip for me. We also had a quick look inside the Ice Museum.
Day 4 & 5: These days were mostly about nature walks and waiting for the aurora in the evenings. We did some light hiking during the day and went to quieter spots outside the city at night to track the lights.
Day 6: We stayed in a traditional wooden cabin for our last night. Watched the green lights dance in the sky one last time before catching the flight back from Fairbanks.
Some practical notes from my experience:
· Bring a US plug adapter, as our European two-pin plugs won't work.
· Dress in warm layers. The temperature drops quickly, especially when you stand still waiting for the lights at night.
· Card payment (Visa/Mastercard) is accepted almost everywhere, but keeping a small amount of cash is useful for emergencies.
It was a long journey but a beautiful experience. I would definitely go back, but next time I would plan a longer stay to enjoy it at an even slower pace.
