Enshi's canyons and the Qingjiang River are truly beautiful, but the travel experience in this city has a catch—if you don't figure things out in advance, it's easy to fall into traps. I spent 5 days and 4 nights there, and I've compiled all the pitfalls I encountered or nearly encountered, along with a solution for each. Pitfall 1 · Attractions are scattered, unsure where to start Enshi's attractions are spread across Enshi City, Hefeng County, Jianshi County, and Lichuan City—each in a different direction. Enshi Grand Canyon is west of the city, Pingshan Canyon is in Hefeng, Zhixingu is in Jianshi, and Daqingjiang is in Shadi. They are a 1–2 hour drive from each other. If you don't plan the order well, you'll spend half your time on the road. Solution: Follow the "City → East → South → North → Return" route to avoid backtracking. Day 1. Arrive in Enshi, stay in the city, and explore the Tujia Daughter City in the evening. Daughter City is free and open all day, with the most activity from 3:00 PM–10:00 PM. At 7:00 PM, there are Baishou dances and crying marriage performances. Bowl-smashing wine is 5 yuan per bowl. The red lanterns and stilt houses look great in photos during the blue hour. Day 2. Head toward the Daqingjiang Honghua Peak Forest, about 1.5 hours from the city. See the emerald Qingjiang River from the cliffside plank road. Beginners can choose the intermediate river-view route, which takes 2–3 hours and includes safety ropes and instructors. Via ferrata starts at 158 yuan. Day 3. Go to Pingshan Canyon. Drive 1.5 hours to Xuan'en in the afternoon. In the evening, see the night views of the Wenlan Bridge and Moda Building on the Gongshui River. There is a musical fountain at 7:00 PM. Eat grilled live fish along the river. Day 4. Go to Zhixingu. The package ticket for the cliff plank road, glass bridge, and Zhixingu cruise is 180 yuan. It's mostly flat ground and not tiring. Day 5. Go to Suobuya Stone Forest, a 460-million-year-old Ordovician stone forest. It has more shade and is cooler than the Grand Canyon. Once inside, head straight to "Mozigou" and "Lianhuazhai," which are the most essential, soul-stirring areas of the scenic spot. Pitfall 2 · Can't book Pingshan Canyon Pingshan Canyon is Enshi's most popular attraction. The ticket plus boat ticket is 210 yuan, but you must book in advance. Tickets are released at midnight 5–7 days ahead and often sell out in seconds. Solution: Book immediately once your departure date is set. If you can't get a booking, there are two alternatives: go to Zhixingu, where the ticket plus transfer bus is 90 yuan—it's mostly flat, and the "magic carpet and elevator" version is not tiring for seniors and children; or go to Tenglong Cave, which has a constant temperature of 18°C and can be visited even on rainy days. More importantly: The "floating boat" effect at Pingshan Canyon only happens after consecutive sunny days. If it has been raining for a week before your departure, the water will become murky, and the floating effect will be gone. Check the weather forecast before you leave; if it's going to be rainy, switch to Zhixingu or Tenglong Cave. Pitfall 3 · Getting scammed into shopping tours by "low-priced chartered cars" At Enshi Railway Station and scenic spot entrances, people often solicit customers for "low-priced chartered cars to the Grand Canyon." A friend of mine fell for this—they said it was 200 yuan for a full day, but they ended up being taken to a selenium-rich tea shop and a jade shop for an hour each. By the time they arrived at the scenic spot, it was already 2:00 PM. A standard tour of Enshi Grand Canyon takes 4–5 hours, so entering at 2:00 PM means you won't be able to finish it. Solution: For chartered cars, use legitimate platforms or ask your hotel front desk for recommendations. The normal price is 300–400 yuan per day. Ignore the "low-priced chartered cars" at the railway station and scenic spot entrances. If the price is unreasonably low, they will definitely make it up elsewhere. Pitfall 4 · Getting ripped off on food There are many "specialty shops" at the exits of Enshi's scenic spots, with prices two to three times higher than supermarkets in the city. A serving of hezha costs 15 yuan in a small restaurant, but 45 yuan in a specialty shop. Selenium-rich tea sells for 300–500 yuan per jin at scenic spot exits, while the same product costs 100–200 yuan in city supermarkets. Solution: Eat at restaurants in the city that locals frequent. Zhangguan Hezha and Xuan'en Grilled Live Fish are both long-standing restaurants recommended by locals. Buy local specialties at city supermarkets; selenium-rich tea in supermarkets has standard packaging and pricing, and it's not more expensive than at the scenic spots. Don't buy from the "specialty shops" at the scenic spot exits. Pitfall 5 · It's too difficult for seniors and children Enshi Grand Canyon has many stairs, and Pingshan Canyon also has quite a bit of climbing. If you are traveling with seniors or children under 6, the standard route will be very tiring. Solution: For family trips, prioritize Tujia Daughter City, Zhixingu, and Xuan'en. If you don't want to climb at Zhixingu, buy the package ticket that includes the sightseeing elevator and cruise to save your legs. Locals in Lichuan usually call this "Fobaoshan," though some old maps write it as "Fubaoshan." It is a 4A National Forest Park located in the foothills of the Wushan Mountains. With an average elevation of about 1,500 meters and a forest coverage rate of over 90%, it is also one of the sources of the Qingjiang and Yujiang rivers. It is much cooler here in summer than in the city. Below is a travel guide on "how to spend a day" that you can follow directly. I. Departure: Lichuan city center → Fobaoshan We set off from downtown Lichuan in the morning, driving along the G50 Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway. You can reach it by taking the Fobaoshan exit (about 7 km) or the Wangying exit (about 9 km via mountain roads). If you are not driving, you can charter a car or take a taxi from Lichuan Station, which takes about 40–50 minutes. There is also an option to go to Wangying and transfer. The scenic area is about 28 km from downtown Lichuan/the train station. The mountain roads are winding, so beginners should not drive too fast. Buy tickets at the visitor center: Adult tickets are typically CNY 90 on platforms/officially, and half-price/concession tickets are about CNY 45. The cable car is CNY 35 one-way and CNY 55 round-trip. The glass skywalk, "Step by Step" bridge, etc., are charged separately or as part of a daily package. In the spring of 2026, a discounted package for local residents including "admission + one-way cable car + Sky Mirror + glass skywalk" was offered; general tourists should refer to the window price on the day of the visit. II. Entering the mountain: Walking downhill to see the waterfalls is the easiest on your legs The most comfortable way to tour Fobaoshan is to "go downhill first, then take the cable car back." From the ticket gate, head down along the wooden boardwalk/cliff trail, passing waterfalls all the way: · Gaodongyan Waterfall: A drop of about 260 meters. When the water volume is high, the mist hits your face, making it very cool to stand underneath in summer. · Sandiequan/Yujiangyuan Waterfall Cluster: Sandiequan has a nominal drop of about 280 meters with tiered falls, making it the most photogenic spot. · Along the way, you will pass the Shuai-Shuai Bridge, Azalea Pavilion, Xilankapu Workshop (Tujia brocade display), and the Russian-style wooden boardwalk. The pace is relaxed. We spent about 1.5–2 hours on this section. It is even easier if you don't rush to take photos or play on the glass attractions. For those with elderly people or children, we recommend walking only this half, then taking the cable car from the low point back to the top, which avoids backtracking and steep climbs. III. Thrilling attractions: Glass skywalk + cliff swing In the cliff section, there is a 3D glass skywalk about 200 meters long, suspended over the canyon with 3D special effects under your feet. If you are afraid of heights, do not force yourself. Further up, there are popular cliff swings and the "Step by Step" suspension bridge. Young people find them exciting, but they may be closed on rainy days due to slippery conditions. We didn't do all the attractions, just the glass skywalk section—it felt more stable than expected, but hold onto your phone tightly as it is windy. IV. Rafting (an additional summer activity) The Fobaoshan Grand Canyon rafting route is about 5.8 km long with a total drop of about 260 meters. It is usually open in summer/around June. Ticket prices on various platforms vary (CNY 90/158/180, etc., for different packages); check the price on the day of your visit. Most announcements/travelogues state that ticket checking stops around 5:00 PM. The process is roughly: change into quick-dry clothes → put your phone in a waterproof bag → enter the water upstream → rapids + calm sections → shower at the finish line → take the scenic transport/cable car back. We only hiked into the canyon and didn't go rafting, which made the return trip easier. If you are going specifically for water activities, we recommend seeing the waterfalls in the morning, having a light lunch at noon, and rafting in the afternoon, leaving enough time for changing clothes and the return trip. V. Return and dining After leaving the scenic area, return to Wangying or downtown Lichuan to eat: · Fobaoshan/Wangying water shield soup: Slippery and gelatinous, refreshing in summer. · Heza (soybean stew), roasted potatoes, Baiyang dried tofu, cured pork trotter hot pot, Wangying duck offal, and Genba jelly noodles. · If you want to follow a cultural route, you can add the "Longchuan Diao Intangible Cultural Heritage Reception Hall" upon returning to Lichuan to listen to Lichuan folk songs and watch a short play about Tujia wedding customs. For accommodation, it depends on your budget: wooden cabins or hotels around the scenic area/on the mountaintop are closest to nature; homestays are cheaper; chain hotels in downtown Lichuan are the most convenient, and you can visit Tenglong Cave and Qiyue Mountain the next day. VI. Tips and what to bring · The mountain roads are winding and foggy during the rainy season; do not drive at night if you are driving yourself. · The waterfall section is slippery all year round; wear non-slip shoes and avoid leather shoes/high heels. · It is several degrees cooler on the mountain than in downtown Lichuan, so bring a light jacket even in summer. You must change into dry clothes after rafting. · The glass skywalk, swings, and cable car are all secondary consumption items; decide whether you only want to see the waterfalls or do everything before buying a package. · For the elderly, children, and those just there for photos, the "downhill boardwalk + cable car return" route is the least strenuous. Hardcore young people can add rafting and all other attractions. · You can buy water shield and Baiyang dried tofu as souvenirs, but ask for the price per jin (500g) for loose items sold on the roadside. If you like, I can compress this into an hourly itinerary based on "Two days in Lichuan: Fobaoshan + Tenglong Cave" or "Half-day Fobaoshan trip with kids/elderly."

Tenglong Cave was truly breathtaking; it was the first time I'd seen such a large natural cave. Although I visited during the National Day holiday, there weren't many tourists, making for a pleasant experience. The distance from the front cave to the back cave is about 2 kilometers. We didn't take the shuttle bus; we walked there and back. On the way back, there were noticeably more tourists. The performance inside the cave was quite good, but the kids kept wanting to leave, so we had to leave halfway through. While I felt the cave was a bit overdeveloped, this natural wonder is definitely worth seeing.

lfzlj51Qiyue Mountain is a mountainous grassland in southern China, located in the west of Lichuan City, Hubei Province, bordering Chongqing Shizhu and Wanzhou to the west, only 30 kilometers away from Lichuan City, and National Highway 318 passes through the scenic area. The top of the mountain is basically flat, with seven unique hills, including Heidabao, Kanjindabao, Luojiadabao, Dengjiadabao, Wanjiadabao, Dabao, and Pengjiadabao, spreading out like seven stars, so the ancients also called it Qiyao Mountain, now known as Qiyue Mountain. Qiyue Mountain is like a towering wall stretching across the west sky, becoming a major barrier and military stronghold between Jingchu and Bashu in ancient times.
非凡轶生Enshi has been experiencing light rain every day recently, and fog is highly likely on the mountains. While walking along the cliffside plank road, everything was shrouded in mist, making it impossible to see anything. Fortunately, the fog cleared when we reached "One Incense Stick," and we could see. This scenic area requires a bit of luck. The entire hike takes about 5 hours (from parking lot to parking lot). The most physically demanding section is from the beginning to the "One Line Sky," while the later sections are less strenuous. I think the Earth Fissure is more unique than Qixingzhai. Enshi Grand Canyon is a karst landscape, and Qixingzhai's appearance is more like a peak forest, lacking a distinctive feature. However, the Earth Fissure is very special: the collapse of the underground cave ceiling formed the Yunlong River Fissure, and the continuous erosion and dissolution of the cliff face by flowing water has created stone curtains, which is quite interesting. The scenic area is over 1000 meters above sea level and has many maple trees. With the recent light rain and large temperature differences between day and night, the maple leaves have turned red, which is also a sight to behold.

It is a famous tourist resort and a national AAAA-level scenic spot. There are many high-rise buildings, holiday villas and homestays. Although Sumadang does not have famous landscapes, it is surrounded by continuous mountains and dense forests. It is quiet and natural with unique customs. Especially in summer, there is no scorching heat and the climate is cool. It is an excellent place for leisure, summer vacation and sightseeing.
清风若溪The best scenic spot in Enshi is not only free, but also because of the rich and colorful scenery, which combines Qingjiang water, mountains, caves, grasslands, and primitive farming tribes. It is quite tiring to cross the whole journey, so it is recommended to take the essence section. From Longmen Inn, under the Love Valley, take a look at Dudu Village, then go to see the Yinhe Cave and the ancient riverbed first, then return by the original route, walk through Sanlongmen, Erlongmen, Dalongmen to the grassland, and return to Longmen Inn after seeing the Haohan Slope. This is enough for most of the day. Cross the whole journey, Jingzhao Villa, Black Hole, Village, Ancient Riverbed, Yinhe Cave, Dudu Village, Sanlongmen, Erlongmen, Dalongmen, Grassland, Haohan Slope, Bamboo Forest, Yixiantian, and come out of the village. Be sure to walk on a sunny day, bring knee pads, trekking poles, and outdoor hiking shoes. It takes about 8 hours. It is recommended to download the GPS route with 2 road apps and look at the colorful ribbon road signs on the road.

悠宝妈Yumu Village, a Tujia village, is located at the junction of Hubei and Chongqing, 61 kilometers east of Lichuan City. Surrounded by cliffs, Yumu Village covers an area of 6 square kilometers and is home to more than 500 Tujia mountain villagers. There are Tujia castles, passes, ancient tombs, plank roads and houses here. It is the best-preserved Tujia village in China. The castle walls and ancient plank roads in the scenic area are well preserved, dozens of ancient tombs are exquisitely carved, and the passes are thrilling. The villagers' production and living utensils are simple and traditional, and the ethnic customs are unique. It is known as the "paradise on earth".
非凡轶生Enshi Grand Canyon is divided into two parts: Qixingzhai and Yunlong Ground Fissure. I have to say, visiting Qixingzhai was already exhausting. My husband and I didn't go to Yunlong Ground Fissure; we let our son go by himself. Qixingzhai alone took four hours, and getting to Yunlong Ground Fissure would have taken another two hours. It was drizzling the day we went, so we couldn't see much of the distant scenery, but the swirling mist had its own unique charm.
