Standing at the window on the third floor of Yueyang Tower, the wind blows straight in from the lake. In the distance, the water and sky merge into a gray-white line, and the Yueyang Gate below shrinks to the size of a palm. Before I came, I thought this was just a place to climb up and take photos, but after standing there, I realized this tower is meant for gazing out at the lake. Yueyang is located at the confluence of Dongting Lake and the Yangtze River. Yueyang Tower is on Dongting North Road in the Yueyanglou District. You can take a train to either Yueyang Station or Yueyang East Station. The East Station serves high-speed rail. A 2-day itinerary is convenient: spend 1 day around the tower and the lake, and the other day you can head to Miluo or Zhangguying Village. There are only 3 main things to see: a tower, a lake, and an island in the middle of the lake. The tower and the lake are best seen together Yueyang Tower is one of the 3 great towers of Jiangnan. The one before your eyes was rebuilt during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty. 4 pillars support 3 layers of flying eaves, and the entire building was constructed without a single iron nail, relying entirely on wood joinery. Don't rush to go upstairs when you enter; take a moment to look at the carved screen of "Yueyang Tower Record" on the first floor. It's a sandalwood carving, a replica from the Qing Dynasty, as the original has long been collected. Once you reach the third floor and look west, you can take in Dongting Lake, Junshan Island, and the distant Yangtze River estuary all at once. Standing at this height, you'll understand what Fan Zhongyan meant when he wrote about "embracing distant mountains and swallowing the Yangtze River." A boat ticket splits Dongting in two Take a boat from the pier next to Yueyang Tower to Junshan Island. The trip takes about 40 minutes. As the boat sets off, the shore slowly recedes into a line, and that's when you truly feel the scale of the 800-li Dongting Lake. The island isn't large. Half a day is enough to walk around it. The Xiang Concubine Temple is dedicated to the 2 consorts of Emperor Shun, and the spotted bamboo in the courtyard is marked with tear-like stains. Further ahead is the Liu Yi Well, where the story of Liu Yi delivering the letter took place. In autumn, when the reeds turn white, the entire lakeshore is perfect for photos. Eat fish by the river, slurp noodles in the streets You don't need to go out of your way to find food. For lunch, grab a table of fish nearby. Steamed icefish from Dongting Lake and braised crucian carp are great, or if you're feeling fancy, order a full-fish feast for about CNY 50–80 per person. In the evening, head to Dongting South Road, a district converted from old warehouses and piers. Take your time enjoying river snails and crawfish with some local beer. For breakfast, I'm partial to Yueyang rice noodles. They are generous with the toppings; a bowl of beef noodles costs about CNY 10, and the broth is made from bone stock. For accommodation, choose the area around Yueyang Tower or Bianhe Street. You'll be just a few steps from the scenic area, and you can come out at night to see the illuminated tower. You can book a clean chain hotel for around CNY 200. Bianhe Street next to the tower sells souvenirs during the day, with people displaying Junshan Silver Needle tea and Yueyang fans. At night, a row of lanterns lights up, making it a great place for a stroll. There are a few things about tickets and boats that are easy to overlook, so take note. I recall the ticket price is CNY 70, with half-price for students and seniors. If you can recite the entire "Yueyang Tower Record," you can get free admission during certain times, but you must book it on your phone first. The joint ticket for Yueyang Tower and Junshan Island is valid for 2 days, so buy it together if you plan to visit both. Boat schedules depend on the weather. If it's too windy, the ferry stops running. Check the weather forecast before you leave, and ask the staff at the pier if it's operating before you head to the island. The stone paths on the island are slippery after rain, so don't wear shoes with hard soles. There are also sightseeing carts on Junshan Island for CNY 20 round-trip; you can take one if you want to save energy. Before I go, I'll add a couple of tips based on my own mistakes. The free admission for reciting "Yueyang Tower Record" is limited by time slots and quotas. Don't assume you can just show up and recite it to get in. Check the booking page on your phone the day before you leave to make sure there are still spots available before you head out. Get to the tower early; if you go up before 9:00 AM, you generally won't have to squeeze in with tour groups. In the afternoon, the light hits at an angle, which is better for photographing the lake from the tower. I stayed too long to watch the sunset, and when I looked at the stairs to go down, they were narrow and dark. I had to hold onto the railing and take it one step at a time to reach the bottom. If you're traveling with seniors or children, please be careful. The ferry service depends on the weather and stops if it's too windy, so don't make your itinerary too tight. Leave half a day of flexibility so you won't be stressed.

After exiting, turn right onto Pingwu Highway. Drive to the Pingjiang County roundabout, turn left onto Tianyue Avenue, turn right at the third roundabout onto Liujiatan Bridge, and drive towards Shiniuzhai. After reaching Sanshi, turn right and pass through Shuangkou to reach the Xianchong intersection. Then, turn right onto the concrete road to reach the attraction directly. The whole trip takes about 2.5 hours, and the road conditions are good. 🎫 Tickets & Opening Hours Ticket prices range from ¥95 to ¥368 depending on the activity. A single ticket for canyon hiking is about ¥95, and a full-course rafting package is about ¥368. You can choose according to your needs. Opening hours in summer are 8:00 AM–5:30 PM. It is recommended to book one day in advance via the official WeChat account or an online travel platform to avoid queuing on-site. Discount policies: Students with a student ID and seniors with an ID card can enjoy half-price discounts. Children under 1.2 meters are exempt from the hiking ticket. 🗺️ Recommended Route I recommend following the attraction's walking trail in this order: Entrance → Xinghou Mountain → Shengui Shangshan → Luoxiao Earth Fissure → Lurong Ancient Realm → Lianyun Mountain Grand Canyon Rafting Exit. The wide field of view is perfect for panoramic shots 3️⃣ Rafting Starting Drop: Ask a friend to help capture the moment you rush down the rafting drop. It's dynamic and cool ⚠️ Tips to Avoid Pitfalls 1️⃣ For rafting, be sure to bring a clean set of clothes to change into, including underwear and socks. You will definitely get soaked after getting in the water 2️⃣ Try to arrive before 10:00 AM or after 2:00 PM to avoid the midday sun and the peak rafting hours, so you don't have to queue 3️⃣ The cheap water guns sold at the entrance are of poor quality and break easily. You can bring your own foldable one, which is more convenient 4️⃣ There are many mosquitoes and insects on the canyon trails. Be sure to spray mosquito repellent in advance so you don't get bitten all over your legs 🍜 Local Food Drive 15 minutes from the attraction to Jiayi Town and be sure to try the local "Pingjiang Three Delicacies": Pingjiang dried bean curd with sauce, Pingjiang dried bean curd, and Pingjiang crispy tripe. They are salty, fragrant, and go great with rice. The "Jiayi Local Restaurant" in town makes a very authentic Three Delicacies platter at an affordable price; you can get full for about ¥50 per person. If you want snacks, you must try the fried dried bean curd from the roadside stalls—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and super fragrant when sprinkled with chili powder. 💡 Practical Information The best season to visit is summer; it's so comfortable to escape the heat and play in the water. The recommended duration is about 2 hours; if you go rafting, allow for 3 hours. For clothing, wear comfortable sneakers for walking the trails. For rafting, quick-dry clothing is more convenient. Remember to use sunscreen and bring a waterproof bag for your phone. Rafting is not recommended for children under 1.2 meters. When hiking, be sure to hold children's hands and keep them on the path.

If you enjoy places with historical significance or simply want to experience a different side of the city, it's definitely worth considering.Most visitors seem to take the sightseeing train to the southern end of the island, where the famous Mao Zedong statue is located. That's also where you'll find plenty of people taking photos, so don't expect a particularly quiet experience.The main downside is that visiting the island takes quite a bit of time, especially if you want to explore it properly. And while it's certainly a nice place, I'm not sure the experience justifies spending several hours here if you have a limited amount of time in Changsha and other places you'd like to see.On the other hand, if you're simply looking for a relaxing walk through a green park, with opportunities to stop by the river and enjoy the scenery, it's a lovely option.Overall, I'd say it's worth visiting if you have some extra time or are particularly interested in Chinese history. Otherwise, I wouldn't necessarily put it at the very top of your Changsha itinerary.

Bringing kids to Tongguan Kiln was a great experience, and the Black Stone Boat Water Stunt Show was the absolute favorite! The warships, explosions, flames, and water stunts were spectacular, the scenes were grand, and the performers were very professional. A word of caution: those in the front rows can get splashed, so be sure to queue early to get a good view. The entire show is fast-paced and engaging, with no dull moments. Kids were completely captivated. Don't miss it when you visit the ancient town!

The park is great! Well maintained and a beautiful place to see nature. I would say, your experience will vary with the weather. For me, it was really foggy and nothing was visible at the top... but still I was able to enjoy the lower area. I think there is beauty in seeing the park with the fog. Many tourists were complaining a lot about not being able to the view from the top. But I think any experience has its great points... you have to adapt to the weather after all.
