How can this niche and treasure-like local island be so beautiful! — traveler post in Thoddoo

How can this niche and treasure-like local island be so beautiful!

I'm Aqin, a professional photographer, and also a travel blogger with millions of followers who has been to 26 countries (on a certain platform). 2017 was my first time visiting Thoddoo Island. Back then, the beaches of Thoddoo were still undeveloped. I remember when I emerged from a wild coconut grove, the scene suddenly lit up before my eyes. Oh my god! A whole stretch of Tiffany blue lagoon was spread out right in front of me. It turned out that the Maldives I had imagined looked just like this place~ Its beauty shouldn’t be confined to just my camera lens. I want to share this treasure island with everyone. Some say the prices in the Maldives need to be lowered. I want to say, the Maldives itself isn’t expensive. Spending a week on Thoddoo Island can be done for just a few thousand yuan per person. If you come in the off-season and just lie on the beach every day without going out to sea, splitting hotel costs between two people, honestly, you won’t even spend 3,000 yuan in a week. This is the real cost of living on a Maldives local island. I have witnessed it with my own eyes: paradise doesn’t have to be expensive. I have been to more local islands than most local workers. I know which island has the most beautiful trailing sand beaches, which coral reef has the most fish for snorkeling, which island’s lagoon looks the best, and which island still preserves authentic local culture. Every island has its own strengths and weaknesses. When I see the very popular Maafushi and Fulidhoo on social media, I feel that Thoddoo Island should not be overlooked. I want more people to see what’s here. If you want to learn more about this island’s travel tips, I will keep updating more travel advice. Photos 1-2-4-5-6-10 show the scenery of Thoddoo Island itself. Photos 3-7-8-9 show the trailing sand beaches near Thoddoo Island.

Thoddoo Island: Whispers of the Ocean in the Maldives — traveler post in Thoddoo

Thoddoo Island: Whispers of the Ocean in the Maldives

Beyond the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Thoddoo Island in the Maldives lies like a secluded pearl, nestled in the embrace of the Indian Ocean. With anticipation, I set foot on this pristine land, embarking on a dreamlike journey into slow time. Upon arrival, the sun shone brilliantly, the white sand soft as cotton beneath my feet, and the azure blue of the ocean washed over me. The gentle lapping of waves against the shore created a rhythmic sound, like an ancient, melodious song, soothing the restlessness within me. Strolling along the coastline, coral reefs shimmered beneath the shallows, teeming with colorful tropical fish. Their graceful movements resembled musical notes dancing in the water. I couldn't resist donning my diving gear and plunging into this blue world. I swam alongside sea turtles, watching them glide effortlessly, and encountered playful dolphins, feeling the joy and wonder they brought. In the depths of the ocean, time seemed to lose all meaning as I reveled in exploring the wonders of life and enjoying the intimacy with nature. Back on shore, the afternoon unfolded in lazy tranquility. Thatched-roof huts nestled among coconut trees exuded a rustic charm. I settled into a lounge chair with a book in hand, the sea breeze gently turning the pages as my thoughts drifted away. Glancing up, I watched the sun slowly descend over the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange and red. In that moment, the world was bathed in a soft, dreamlike glow. Nightfall brought tranquility to Thoddoo Island. The night sky glittered with stars like sparkling gems. Lying on the beach, gazing at the vast expanse above, I listened to the whispers of the waves, my heart filled with peace. Here, there were no city lights, no busy work schedules, no pressures of daily life, only the pure beauty of nature. The islanders lived simple, happy lives, their smiles as radiant as the sun. I visited the local village, conversing with them, savoring their homemade food, and experiencing their zest for life. Their simple and genuine approach to life deepened my understanding of the meaning of travel. On Thoddoo Island, every moment felt elongated. I stopped chasing time and instead walked alongside it. Here, I listened to the gentle whispers of the ocean, felt the magic of nature and the miracle of life. This slow-time journey was a sanctuary found amidst the hustle and bustle of the world, a treasure I will forever cherish.

On Thoddoo Island, encounter the dreamlike and poetic moments of the Maldives.

Stepping onto Thoddoo Island in the Maldives is like stepping into a dreamland forgotten by the world, where every inch of air is filled with romance and poetry. Upon arriving at Thoddoo Island, the sun shines down unreservedly, and the white sand beneath your feet is as soft as clouds. The distant sea stretches out from shallow to deep, transitioning from a clear light blue to a deep azure, like a gradient painting carefully crafted by nature. The waves gently lap against the beach, making a pleasant sound, as if whispering ancient and charming stories. Strolling along the beach, the fine sand gently caresses your skin. Coconut trees line the shore, their huge leaves swaying gently in the sea breeze, casting mottled shadows. Occasionally, a ripe coconut falls, plopping into the sea with a splash, creating small ripples. The underwater world of Thoddoo Island is a visual feast. Put on your diving gear and dive into the mysterious blue world, as if entering a magical fairy tale kingdom. Colorful coral reefs of various shapes, some like antlers, some like flowers, dance gently in the sea. Schools of tropical fish shuttle among them, their scales shimmering with a captivating glow, like agile spirits. I reach out to touch them, but they swim away nimbly, leaving behind a trail of dreamlike light and shadow. As night falls, Thoddoo Island puts on an even more enchanting attire. The stars, like dazzling gems, are densely embedded in the night sky, seemingly within reach. Lying on a beach chair, listening to the whispers of the waves, gazing at the vast starry sky, my thoughts drift along. The sea at this moment, illuminated by the moonlight, shimmers with dreamlike ripples. On the island, time seems to slow down. I greet the first rays of sunlight in the morning and watch dolphins leaping joyfully on the sea surface. In the afternoon, I hide under the coconut trees, read a good book, and let the sea breeze gently turn the pages. In the evening, I walk hand in hand with my loved one on the beach, admiring the gorgeous sunset that paints the sky fiery red. Every moment on Thoddoo Island is filled with surprises and emotions. Its tranquility, its beauty, and its romance are deeply imprinted in my heart. Here, I forget all my worries and fatigue, immersed only in this pure beauty. Leaving Thoddoo Island, my heart is full of reluctance, but I know that this dreamlike and poetic time will forever be treasured in the depths of my memory, becoming the most precious treasure of my life.

Thoddoo Island — The Maldives on Your Own Terms — traveler post in Thoddoo

Thoddoo Island — The Maldives on Your Own Terms

Thoddoo is arguably the most popular local island in the Maldives, often referred to as the "Fruit Island." It earned this nickname because most of the country's produce is grown right here. Naturally, this means fruits and vegetables are much more affordable than anywhere else. The island has several clear advantages: ➕ Proximity to Male. A speedboat transfer to the airport costs $35 and takes about an hour. ➕ Accommodation is cheaper than on many other local islands. Since prices vary greatly depending on the season, I recommend checking booking aggregators for the latest rates. Out of the four islands we visited, this one was the most budget-friendly. ➕ Incredible snorkeling right off the shore. We swam with countless sea turtles every day, spotted rays twice in the deeper parts, found a spot with lionfish, and even encountered cuttlefish. Surprisingly, the inner reef is technically "dead"—it’s mostly covered in sea grass—but it has become a haven for fish, turtles, moray eels, and other marine life. We spent hours snorkeling here. We only managed to find a single shark beyond the outer reef, which we reached by paddleboard. It was quite far away and swam off as soon as it saw us. While the outer reef is alive with coral, the turtles there are more skittish, and we saw fewer interesting fish than near the shore. The coral is beautiful, but overall, our experience there wasn't the best. ➕ It’s a fairly large island for the Maldives, so there’s plenty of room to explore. Bicycles are the way to go here! Some guesthouses provide them for free, while others rent them for $4-$5 a day. You can bike through palm groves between the plantations, check out all the beaches, and even visit a mini goat farm. ➕ Near the goat pen, there’s a massive tree that’s a favorite hangout for flying foxes (fruit bats). They fly from branch to branch, hang upside down, and get really active toward evening. They’re completely harmless to humans and are quite a sight to see! ➕ Thoddoo offers several beaches and plenty of swimming spots. If you don’t like the crowds at the main bikini beach, you can just walk 100 meters away and enjoy the water in total peace. ➕ Great selection of cafes, supermarkets, and tour agencies. On many local islands, there’s only one dive center that sets its own prices. Here, competition keeps prices fair for paddleboards, kayaks, and other water activities. Of course, there are some downsides: ➖ Large crowds. Thoddoo is sometimes nicknamed the "Maldivian Anapa" (a reference to a crowded resort) because of its popularity. During peak season, the main beaches get crowded, and popular cafes reach a "no-room-to-sit" capacity during rush hour. We simply chose less popular cafes and skipped the crowded parts of the beach, which worked out great for us. ➖ No free sunbeds. Unlike the equally popular Ukulhas, where loungers are free, Thoddoo has recently started charging for this amenity. ➖ No dedicated shark point. On Mathiveri and Ukulhas, our favorite spots were the piers, where dozens of nurse sharks, stingrays, and reef sharks gather to be fed. We could sit there for hours just watching them. On Thoddoo, you might see one or two nurse sharks at the pier in the evening, but it’s hit or miss, and there’s no lighting. It’s surprising such a popular island hasn’t organized something similar. Otherwise, Thoddoo is beautiful and pleasant. We spent five nights here and never got bored. It’s definitely on the list of places we would visit again. Posts about Mathiveri and Ukulhas are already on my profile 🙌🏼 What about you—which islands do you prefer? 🌴

Perfect Maldives Stay at Dive Villa — traveler post in Thoddoo

Perfect Maldives Stay at Dive Villa

We visited the Maldives for the first time and decided not to risk traveling during the off-season. I must say, the weather was great—it didn’t disappoint. Although there were occasional winds and light rain, they were brief and didn’t bother us much. The guesthouse, DIVE VILLA, was amazing—compact, cozy, and well-maintained. The rooms were comfortable, clean, and had everything we needed. We received a warm welcome, and a special shout-out to Mama Rima 🫶, who was so helpful in explaining everything on the island. They provide bicycles, umbrellas, masks, snorkels, and other items you might need if you haven’t brought your own. The food was absolutely delicious 👌👍👍👍👍🤗, with generous portions. We truly loved it 💞 and will definitely come back to stay at this guesthouse whenever possible!

🏝️ Dhigurah vs Other Maldives Islands: Which One Should You Choose? 🇲🇻 — traveler post in Thoddoo

🏝️ Dhigurah vs Other Maldives Islands: Which One Should You Choose? 🇲🇻

You don’t need a luxury resort to experience the Maldives. Some of the country’s local islands have incredible beaches, turquoise lagoons, snorkeling and marine life, while costing a fraction of a private resort. But which island should you actually choose? Here’s how I would compare some of the most popular local islands: 🐋 DHIGURAH Choose Dhigurah if your dream is whale sharks, long beaches and a peaceful island atmosphere. It sits in South Ari Atoll, one of the world’s important whale shark areas, where whale sharks can be encountered year-round. The island also has a huge sandbank and a much quieter atmosphere than Maafushi. (visitmaldives) 🌴 THODDOO A great option if your priority is beautiful beaches, greenery and a relaxed local atmosphere. The island is also known for its fruit farms, giving it a very different landscape from many other Maldives islands. (Maldives Traveler) 🌊 UKULHAS Pick Ukulhas if you want a combination of beautiful beaches, a good house reef and a more developed local-island experience. It’s a nice middle ground between having things to do and still feeling relatively peaceful. (Madi Maldives) 🦈 RASDHOO For divers, Rasdhoo is particularly interesting because of its famous dive sites and access to the surrounding reefs. The island itself is smaller and less beach-focused than Dhigurah or Thoddoo. (Madi Maldives) 🍹 MAAFUSHI If you want the most choice, Maafushi is the easiest option. There are lots of guesthouses, restaurants, tour operators and excursions, and competition between operators can make activities cheaper. The trade-off is that it is considerably busier and more developed than islands such as Dhigurah or Thoddoo. (Maldives Traveler) 💡 So which one should you choose? 🐋 Whale sharks + tranquility → Dhigurah 🏖️ Beach + greenery → Thoddoo 🐠 House reef + relaxed island → Ukulhas 🤿 Diving → Rasdhoo 💰 Budget + lots of excursions → Maafushi For me, the beauty of visiting the Maldives this way is that you don’t have to choose between an incredible tropical destination and a huge resort bill. Local islands let you experience a completely different side of the Maldives. And if you have enough time, you can even combine two islands instead of choosing just one. Which Maldives island would you choose? 👇 #maldives #dhigurah #thoddoo #ukulhas #rasdhoo #maafushi #maldivestravel #localislands #budgettravel #islandlife #tripmoments

Wonderful Family Stay at Sands Garden — traveler post in Thoddoo

Wonderful Family Stay at Sands Garden

We stayed at Sands Garden as a family from August 16 to 23. First and foremost, we'd like to thank the host, Ali, and the small guesthouse staff for their hospitality, care, and friendliness. Ali greeted us at the pier upon arrival, drove us to the hotel, and showed us around the island. We were welcomed with refreshing drinks, and on one of the days, we were treated to a complimentary dinner featuring delicious fish, vegetables, rice with chicken—our heartfelt thanks for that. Our room was cleaned daily, with fresh towels provided every day. The mattresses and pillows were comfortable, and the air conditioning worked perfectly. Additionally, there was a ceiling fan for extra comfort. Every day, carafes of water were left in the room; if we needed more, we just asked, and they'd provide extra. The room included a kettle, tea, coffee, and sugar. We exchanged currency with Ali at a favorable rate and booked excursions through him as well—swimming with sharks and manta rays, as well as diving. Ali was always available, regardless of the time, ready to help, provide advice, and resolve any issues. Breakfast was included in our stay. When there were few guests, it was à la carte; when there were more, it was served buffet-style. We experienced both options and enjoyed them. Breakfasts included Maldivian dishes with flatbreads and mas huni, continental options with eggs and sausages, as well as toast, pancakes, jam, butter, fruits like apples, watermelon, and papaya. The hotel provided free masks, fins, and life vests, which was a bonus. While we didn’t rent bicycles, we did lease a golf cart through Ali for $30 a day—it was very convenient, especially if you have small children or carry many beach items like fins and masks. Surprisingly, despite the mosque being nearby, we didn’t hear its sounds from the hotel and slept soundly without waking up at 5 AM as we had expected. Overall, we loved everything about our stay. It was our first trip to the Maldives, and we have no regrets about choosing Thoddoo Island and the Sands Garden Guesthouse. Many thanks again to Ali and the entire hotel staff for the warm welcome—you really set the tone for a great, comfortable, and cozy vacation. Keep up the fantastic work!

Thoddoo Island: The Maldives Where You’ll Feel Right at Home — traveler post in Thoddoo

Thoddoo Island: The Maldives Where You’ll Feel Right at Home

If you’re dreaming of the Maldives but want to skip the "ultra-luxury" price tag, take a look at Thoddoo Island. It’s a local inhabited island where you can experience authentic island life, while still enjoying modern guesthouses and tourist-friendly cafes. Why you’ll love it: · Two stunning bikini beaches with powdery white sand and crystal-clear water—perfect for snapping photos and unwinding. 📸 · A house reef just steps from the shore: grab a mask and snorkel, and you’re instantly in the middle of an underwater blockbuster. · Papaya and watermelon farms: see how tropical fruits are grown and taste them fresh from the farm. · Prices for food and accommodation are significantly lower than on resort islands. And all the while, the ocean is just as turquoise, the sand is just as soft, and the sunsets are a true work of art. 😍 💬 If you’ve been to Thoddoo, share your experience! And if you’re just considering it, I’ll tell you all about transfers, hotels, and the best local cafes. 👇

How to Plan a Trip to Experience the Best of the Maldives — traveler post in Thoddoo

How to Plan a Trip to Experience the Best of the Maldives

If your plans include more than just lounging on an island all day, or if you don't have a massive budget, I recommend staying on a local island. Yes, you'll be living among locals, and since it’s a Muslim country, you can’t walk around in swimwear everywhere, and bikini swimming is limited to specific beaches. But these are minor inconveniences compared to what you get in return. I stayed on the island of Thoddoo. It has two bikini beaches—one for sunset and one for sunrise—located at opposite ends of the island. But the island is small, so you can easily walk to both. The sunset beach has a stunning house reef with plenty of fish and turtles. Local excursions are available where you can swim with incredible marine life. I swam with nurse sharks, whale sharks, mantas, eagle rays, stingrays, and more at various reefs. On one tour, we were taken to an abandoned resort where we hung out completely alone, surrounded by the endless ocean. Yes, resorts sell excursions too, BUT they are three times more expensive than on local islands and offer much less variety. You can also take a boat to other local islands; I visited four others besides Thoddoo. If you want a taste of luxury, you can go to a resort for a day. I enjoyed it, but our local island was more interesting, and the reef was more beautiful. I also managed to go fishing, see bioluminescent plankton on the way back, go paddleboarding, take photos on a sandbank in the middle of the ocean, learn freediving, watch dolphins at sunset, and even sleep under the stars on the beach—all in one week! This story is for active travelers who avoid the Maldives because they think it’s boring 😁

Fantastic Stay at Toddu Island and Aholla Hotel — traveler post in Thoddoo

Fantastic Stay at Toddu Island and Aholla Hotel

I absolutely loved Toddu Island and the Aholla Hotel! We celebrated New Year 2026 there. The hotel was spotless, with towels changed daily, and the staff were very friendly. Meals included breakfast and dinner as buffet-style, always delicious with plenty of variety. There were always fresh fruits and the tastiest coffee from the coffee machine! Evenings featured live music, and the beach was nearby. The excursion bureau, supermarkets, and numerous cafes were easily accessible. Everything was splendid—I’ll return for sure! Highly recommend this hotel 200 percent!

The 1.5-hour speedboat ride was really uncomfortable. I recommend taking motion sickness pills in advance. But after arriving on the island, I felt really great. There were towering old trees and I didn't have to worry about being exposed to the sun. There was also the famous Tail Beach. I stayed in a premium sand house for 2 nights and a premium water house for 2 nights. In general, I liked the retro sand house. The water house was more modern, and there were not as many trees as the sand house.

A truly amazing island! The accommodations aren't comparable to resort islands, but they're still clean and comfortable, and the food isn't as bad as bringing instant noodles! Enjoying such a beautiful island experience for a reasonable price, with opportunities for diving and experiencing the local culture is fantastic!

For most people this will be their first or last stop in The Maldives, as it is the island on which the airport is located. It is newly reclaimed land and being designed as a kind of "back-up" capital city in case neighboring Male succumbs to rising sea levels. As such, it is a bit of construction site as new hotels, apartments etc are going up all over the place. An okay beach for a quick dip, but gets a bit of floating trash. In any case, it is okay stopover for a night after arriving or before leaving the country.

W Islands, super beautiful water houses - highly recommended There is an underground nightclub on the island and the atmosphere is great! The full body massage is also a great experience! Especially snorkeling and hang gliding! With a jet ski
