Away from tourists | A flower-filled Italian town — traveler post in Spello

Away from tourists | A flower-filled Italian town

Spello was known as Splendidissima Colonia Julia during the Roman era. Walking on the medieval stone streets of the town, the flowers decorated by each household give me the illusion of being in a botanical garden. Cyclamen, yellow osmanthus, windmill jasmine, hydrangea, wisteria, crape myrtle, lotus... and a series of unnamed flowers. (The town also has a grand flower festival every year!) Stepping out of the alleys of the town, to the high viewpoint, you can smell the scent of wisteria in the wind and the smell of cooking from afar. It's really pleasant!! A cup of coffee or a glass of wine, I feel like I could just linger in this town and not leave. For accommodation, it's suggested to stay outside the town, which is more convenient for parking and handling luggage. We stayed at a B&B called Da Lucilla - Appartamento a Spello. Right outside the window, you can see Spello, and just across the road is the entrance to the town. It's really superb!

Repeat Destination : There’s something about Spello, Umbria that keeps me coming back — traveler post in Spello

Repeat Destination : There’s something about Spello, Umbria that keeps me coming back

I find myself continually drawn back to the enchanting medieval stone walls of Spello, and every time I return to this hilltop gem in Umbria, I am instantly reminded why it remains my absolute favorite place to escape the world. While Tuscany often steals the tourist spotlight, Spello offers a quieter, exceptionally picturesque medieval escape that feels entirely personal and intimate. For me, it has become an effortless and deeply cherished routine to walk through the ancient Roman gates, wander the steep and winding cobblestone alleys, and immerse myself in a walled town that feels like a living, open-air art gallery. Those tranquil mornings before the sun climbs high, when the ancient pinkish stone facades glow softly and the air is filled with the scent of blooming greenery, are the exact reasons why I keep repeating this journey over and over again, knowing deep down that no single visit is ever enough. The incredible sensory experiences, unique local tips, and hidden gems tucked away across the town make every repeat trip feel like a fresh discovery rather than a familiar routine. I always make it a point to explore the quieter side streets where residents lovingly maintain the famous cascading displays of vibrant pink and purple geraniums spilling over ancient stone balconies, turning every corner into a photographer's dream. Beyond the main paths, my favorite local hidden gem is stumbling upon the Roman Villa of Mosaics just outside the town walls, where breathtaking ancient floor mosaics offer a fascinating glimpse into Spello's deep history. To get here easily, I usually catch a short, convenient train ride from Assisi or Perugia right into Spello's station, followed by a gentle, scenic uphill walk into the historic center. When it comes to local suggestions, you simply must stop by a family-run frantoio to taste the region's world-famous, golden extra virgin olive oil paired with rustic local bread. For anyone planning their own escape to this magical corner of Italy, here are a few practical insights I have gathered from my many returns. If you want to witness Spello at its absolute most breathtaking, plan your trip around the annual Infiorata festival in June, when the narrow streets are transformed into stunning, intricate carpets made entirely of fresh flower petals. To enjoy the peaceful atmosphere without the daytime crowds, staying overnight in a charming boutique guesthouse inside the medieval walls allows you to experience the quiet magic of the evening hours. Pack comfortable flat shoes to navigate the sloping stone stairways easily, bring a camera for the endless floral displays, and let the gentle, timeless rhythm of Spello capture your heart. Spello is so much more than a vacation stop; it is an unforgettable, soulful sanctuary that continually calls me home. #spello #umbriatravel #borghitalia #italygram #repeatdestination

Golden Hills and Medieval Magic: My Dreamy Autumn Escape to Umbria, Italy — traveler post in Spello

Golden Hills and Medieval Magic: My Dreamy Autumn Escape to Umbria, Italy

Sharing my travel experience here during autumn to everyone with local tips, hidden gems, where to go, how to get there, budgeting tips because Umbria in October and November is Italy’s best kept secret. While most travelers flock to neighboring Tuscany, Umbria offers a richer, quieter, and deeply authentic slice of Italian life wrapped in breathtaking seasonal foliage. The rolling hills, thick oak forests, and famous Sagrantino vineyards undergo a dramatic transformation as autumn takes hold. Rows of grapevines bleed into fiery shades of ruby red, orange, and glittering amber, framed by the soft silvery green of ancient olive groves bursting with harvest. Wandering through medieval stone towns like Spello and Assisi, the morning mist settles over the golden valleys below, making every vista look like a centuries old painting. The air is delightfully crisp, filled with the intoxicating aroma of woodsmoke, freshly pressed olive oil, and earthy truffles, creating a cozy atmosphere that makes you instantly fall in love with the green heart of Italy. Getting to this undulating landscape is surprisingly smooth and straightforward. You can easily fly into Rome Fiumicino or Florence, take a regional Trenitalia train directly to Perugia or Foligno in about two hours, and then rent a small car to navigate the countryside. Driving along the winding backroads between hill towns is an absolute dream, especially when the light hits the golden foliage at golden hour. For hidden gems, skip the main tourist plazas and head to Montefalco, known as the balcony of Umbria, where you can gaze over endless vineyards completely painted in deep crimson hues. Another enchanting spot is the tiny hilltop village of Rasiglia, a tranquil stream-fed village where clear spring water flows right past stone cottages framed by autumn leaves. If you want a truly unforgettable experience, head to Città della Pieve during late autumn to witness the blooming crocus fields harvested for local saffron, or visit a local frantoio (olive mill) to sample the electric green, peppery new olive oil drizzled over warm, toasted bruschetta. To keep your journey affordable without sacrificing comfort, here are a few practical budgeting tips that helped me along the way. Instead of booking expensive hotels, opt for an agriturismo (a rustic family run farm stay) tucked away in the countryside. They are extraordinarily warm, budget friendly, and often include homemade breakfasts with fresh local jams and pastries. Foodies will love that autumn brings seasonal harvest festivals called sagost, where you can feast on fresh black truffles, roasted chestnuts, and handmade wild boar pasta for just a fraction of fine dining restaurant prices. Traveling in autumn also means shoulder season accommodation rates and zero crowds at major historical landmarks like the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi. I hope that you will treat yourself to this golden Italian paradise before the world finds out about it. #umbria #autumninitaly #fallfoliage #spello #montefalco #italiancountryside #agriturismo #sagrantino #visitaly #offthebeatenpath #fallcolors

Assisi is NOT your average Italian tourist magnet. Forget hectic avenues and traffic jams! Here you’ll wander flower-decked balconies, storybook stone alleys, and sun-drenched piazzas, all overlooking the stunning Umbrian countryside. 🚶♀️🌸 How Many Days in Assisi? 🗓️ One full day is enough to tick off the superstar sights, but for the real magic, stay overnight, you’ll get Assisi’s peaceful, after-hours glow all to yourself when the day-tripping crowds bounce. At night, strolling the softly lit old streets is a total vibe! 🌙 Hot tip: Pair your Umbria adventure with a visit to nearby Spello, Perugia, or Gubbio for the ultimate Italian road trip! Best Time to Visit 👌🏼 Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) = chef’s kiss. 🌷🍁 Temps are comfy and the natural scenery is extra pretty. Summer is bustling and super fun, but heads up, it gets HOT. Plan early sightseeing and linger over a long Italian lunch when the sun’s at its fiercest. ☀️ Winter is pure bliss if you want tranquility, especially at Christmas when the town sparkles with lights and festive events. How to Get to Assisi ✈️ Nearest Airport: Perugia San Francesco d’Assisi Airport, Via dell’Aeroporto, Sant'Egidio, 06134 Perugia PG, about 15 km from Assisi. By Train: From Rome, hop on a train (change at Foligno or grab a direct service if you can) and you’ll be in Assisi in roughly 2 hours. The station’s at Piazza Dante Alighieri, 11, 06081 Assisi PG, so catch a local bus or taxi, or brave the uphill, scenic walk to the old town. By Car: Park at the lots outside the ancient walls, most of central Assisi is strictly resident-only and foot traffic. Check your parking spot so you don’t get ticketed! Assisi Essentials: Must-See Sights 🫶🏼 🌟 Basilica of Saint Francis (Piazza San Francesco, 2, 06081 Assisi PG) This UNESCO-list stunner is a total masterpiece inside and out. The Giotto frescoes? Absolutely legendary. ✨ Basilica of Saint Clare (Piazza Santa Chiara, 1, 06081 Assisi PG) ✨ Piazza del Comune—the heartbeat of town life! ✨ Temple of Minerva (Piazza del Comune, 19) ✨ Rocca Maggiore Fortress (Via della Rocca) ✨ Cathedral of San Rufino (Piazza San Rufino, 3) ✨ All the atmospheric alleys near Via San Francesco Seriously, every corner’s a postcard. 📸 Epic Photography Spots The terrace at Rocca Maggiore is GOAT for epic panoramic shots, catch the whole valley from above! The best part of Assisi? Just being there, soaking up the slow, peaceful pace. Things to Avoid🚫 👟 Don’t wear shoes with meh grip, the old stone streets are steep and can get slippery quick! 🅿️ Double-check parking rules—no winging it with cars; central Assisi is mostly pedestrianized. 🍸 Don’t expect Rome-style nightlife. Assisi is chill, and that’s the whole point. 🙅♂️ Don’t breeze through just the headline spots—take coffee breaks, slow walks, and simply BE in the moment. 👞 Respect church dress codes, especially during services. Shoulders covered, and shorts/mini skirts are a “nope” inside the sacred spots. The Final Word✅ Assisi isn’t just a religious mecca, it’s a storytelling wonderland of medieval walls, star-quality eats, and magnetic sunsets. Whether you vibe with history, crave stunning views, or just wanna dial down your pace in a town that feels a world away from the crowds, Assisi will steal your heart. Give yourself at least one night here, it’s even dreamier when the crowds disappear and the silence takes over. Trust the hype: Assisi IS that magical. ✨ #naturalwonders #travel2026 #italy

Umbria's Hidden Gem - The Flower Town of Spello — traveler post in Spello

Umbria's Hidden Gem - The Flower Town of Spello

Spello, a small hilltop town in Italy's Umbria region with only 8,000 residents, was built during the Roman era. Its medieval-style castles, churches, and watchtowers are arranged harmoniously on the hillside. Early in the morning, walking on the deserted cobblestone streets, the stones and flowers blend perfectly, adding a charming delicacy to the cold hardness of history. Every June (on the Sunday 60 days after Easter), the people of Spello hold their unique Flower Festival. Le Infiorate di Spello transforms the town into a true sea of flowers, and it's unimaginable how beautiful it will be at that time!

Spello - an ancient town in Umbria — traveler post in Spello

Spello - an ancient town in Umbria

In the heart of Umbria lies Spello, a beautiful ancient town, on top of a hill. It has many small narrow alleys that go up and down the hill to the city centre. Every now and then you are treated to magnificent views when you look down some of the alleys. It’s a small city, but you have to park quite far away (unless you have a blue badge), so it’s a bit of a walk to get all the way up into town. Quite the workout when it’s hot like it is over summer. But it’s worth it!!! The ancient town is very vibrant, with a lot of restaurants. A great place to eat some of the local wild boar pasta (cinghiale in Italian). Of course on a warm day, don’t forget to eat some ice cream! #umbria #italy #ancient_city

Unforgettable Italy: The Flower Town of Spello and Its Medieval Streets — traveler post in Spello

Unforgettable Italy: The Flower Town of Spello and Its Medieval Streets

If Tuscany is a beautifully printed postcard, then Spello in Umbria is a pastoral poem treasured by time. This town, seemingly stepped out of ancient frescoes, hides flowers, historic sites, and the gentle spirit of the Renaissance. Save this guide and head straight there. ✨ Three Must-Do Things (Unlock the Soul of the Town) 1. Walk on the Flower Carpet Pilgrimage During the Feast of Corpus Christi in May and June, the town lays thousands of fresh flower petals to form a "sacred carpet" leading to the church. The petals create religious patterns and geometric designs, with the scent of flowers mingling with an air of devotion throughout the streets. The festival date changes every year, so be sure to check in advance—missing it means waiting another whole year. 2. Walk Through the Millennium-Old Roman Gates Be sure to visit the Porta Consolare and Porta Venere gates. The weathered stone walls bear the marks of the Roman Empire’s history. The moment you step through, it feels like stepping back a thousand years in time. Every photo you take here is filled with a strong sense of history. 3. Immerse Yourself in the Renaissance Art Gallery The town’s Pinacoteca art gallery houses authentic frescoes by Pinturicchio. The delicate brushwork and bright yet understated colors of the early Renaissance quietly tell the story of artistic heritage. Once seen, these works leave a lasting impression. 📸 Stunning Photo Spots (Original photos guaranteed to impress) Via Cappuccini Street: Along the winding cobblestone road, stone houses are adorned with blooming flower pots. Sunlight spills over the stone walls, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. Every shot here is full of atmosphere. The Town’s Highest Point: Walk up any uphill path to the end and look back over the entire Umbria valley. The red rooftops are arranged like Lego blocks, and the distant mountains are a soothing blue, healing all your fatigue. Any Resident’s Windowsill: The residents of Spello are artists of life, and every windowsill’s floral display is unique. Flowers against stone walls make the perfect backdrop for portraits. 🍝 Taste of Umbria on Your Palate (Local secret dining tips) For the main dish, be sure to try Strangozzi, the local handmade pasta, served with black truffle sauce or meat sauce. It’s chewy and richly aromatic. Pair it with Sagrantino, the local top-tier red wine, which is full-bodied and mellow, leaving you warm all over after a glass. Don’t miss desserts flavored with fig or almond—sweet but not cloying, a perfect sweet ending unique to the town. 💡 Travel Tips (Slowing down is the right way to enjoy) Transportation: The town is best explored on foot. Wear comfortable sneakers to avoid foot pain spoiling your fun. Pace: Set aside at least half a day. Getting deliberately lost is fine—find a street-side café to daydream in, listen to the church bells ringing softly. This is the true way to experience Spello. Atmosphere: There are no noisy tourist crowds here, only quiet, ancient, and refined introversion. The beauty that moves the heart is hidden in the details.

Spello, a Small Town Tour in Italy

📍 Spello near Assisi Assisi is well-known, but since this is a small village, there aren't many reviews about it. I decided to visit just because of its nickname, 'The Village of Flowers,' and ended up discovering a life-changing pasta restaurant and enjoying a peaceful sightseeing experience. Even the common parking lot view felt atmospheric and full of charm. I visited Spello while staying overnight in Assisi on my way from Rome to Florence. If you're traveling by train, it might require some effort, but if you have a rental car, it will be much easier to visit.

Basilica of Santa Maggiore in the small Italian town of Spello

#OverseasTravel 📍Spello It has a similar atmosphere to Assisi, but it's a smaller town. Since I hadn't seen Assisi in the daytime, I walked around in awe, amazed at its beauty. This is the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, which I had captured on Google Maps. Admission was free, so I went inside. It's a small cathedral, but its interior was ornate and beautiful. It was a truly awe-inspiring place. The interior was so stunning, even I, a non-religious person, found myself exploring it with great interest. #OverseasTravel #EuropeTravel #ItalyTravel
