It depends on the type of photography you prefer. Zhangjiajie stands out for its vertical and atmospheric landscapes, while Jiuzhaigou is famous for its colourful lakes and reflections.

🚄 How to get to Zhangjiajie or Jiuzhaigou?

Zhangjiajie is easier to include in a China itinerary thanks to its high-speed train station and airport. Jiuzhaigou, on the other hand, still requires a bit more planning, although access has improved significantly since the opening of the high-speed railway in Sichuan.

How to get to Zhangjiajie

The most convenient and affordable option is usually to arrive from Changsha, one of the main transport hubs in central China.

🚄 High-speed train from Changsha: 2.5-3.5 hours. It's the best value-for-money option in terms of time and price.

✈️ Domestic flight: around 1 hour from cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou or Chongqing.

🚌 Bus: there is a connection from Changsha, although it takes about 4-5 hours and is usually less worthwhile than the train.

How to get to Jiuzhaigou

The usual gateway is Chengdu, from where practically all connections depart.

🚄 High-speed train to Huanglong Jiuzhai: around 2 hours. From the station, there are shuttle buses and taxis that reach the park in approximately 2 hours.

✈️ Flight to Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport: around 1 hour from Chengdu, followed by a road transfer of about 90 minutes to the park entrance.

🚌 Bus from Chengdu: between 8 and 10 hours. It's the cheapest alternative, although it's also the slowest.

💰 How much does it cost to visit Zhangjiajie or Jiuzhaigou?

Here, the difference isn't so much in the base price, but in how the costs stack up during the trip.

** According to the official Jiuzhaigou website (en.jiuzhai.com), the ticket price in high season (from 1 April to 15 November) is 190 yuan per person + 90 yuan for the mandatory tourist bus, making a total of 280 yuan. In low season (from 16 November to 31 March): the ticket price is 80 yuan + 80 yuan for the bus, making a total of 160 yuan.
