History, Culture and Traditional Neighbourhoods near Guangzhou 🕌

It's not all about mountains and hiking trails. When you look at what to see near Guangzhou, you'll realise there are also areas steeped in history, neighbourhoods with an ancient soul, and coastal spots where tradition is more alive than ever.

You can easily lose yourself for two or three hours in these iconic spots, so let's take a look at what you can visit:

Dapeng Fortress: Historic walls by the sea

Collage of a historic street with a traditional arch and ancient rooftops in a village near Guangzhou

To start with, Dapeng Fortress is one of those places that surprises you more than you'd imagine.

Located in the Shenzhen area, it's about two and a half hours from Guangzhou by high-speed train followed by a taxi or local bus. This is where everything takes a complete 180-degree turn, as you leave the modern city behind for stone walls, ancient gates, and narrow alleys where time seems to have stood still.

Once a coastal fortress of the Ming Dynasty, it was designed to defend the coastline against pirates and maritime attacks. And it's no joke—the walls are still standing today, and you can explore them all on foot in a single morning.

That said, it's worth arriving early if you're visiting at the weekend. Although it's not overcrowded like a theme park, it's becoming increasingly popular with Chinese travellers.

📌 Top tip: combine your visit with a trip to a nearby beach if the weather is on your side.

Where to stay in Shenzhen: best neighbourhoods, hotels and activities

Hengqin: Modernity and leisure just a stone's throw from Macau

Panoramic aerial view of a modern city by the river with a cable-stayed bridge and skyscrapers

If you fancy something a bit more modern, Hengqin is in a league of its own. It's connected to Zhuhai and very close to Macau, about two hours from Guangzhou by high-speed train to Zhuhai, followed by a short taxi ride.

The atmosphere here changes completely. With brand-new resorts, wide avenues and theme parks, it's a huge draw for families and groups of friends alike.

And that's not all! The area has developed significantly in recent years, making it incredibly convenient and easy to explore.

If you're looking for contemporary entertainment, shows, or resorts where you can spend the whole day completely switching off, this is the place for you. Mind you, it really depends on what kind of trip you have in mind.

If you're looking for historical authenticity, it might not be your first choice. But for pairing with a getaway to Macau, it fits in quite nicely.

What to see and do in Macau: Must-visit spots

Hailing Island and Zhapo Bay: Maritime Culture and Beaches

A collage of golden sandy beaches, straw parasols and holidaymakers along the coast

If you're drawn to the open sea, Hailing Island and Zhapo Bay are a perfect choice. They're a bit further away—about a three-hour drive or bus ride from Guangzhou—but the change of scenery is well worth the trip.

Hailing is well-known for its expansive beaches and well-established tourist scene, making it a firm favourite with local travellers.

Don't expect a wild, remote island lost on the map; here, you'll find hotels, seafood restaurants, and plenty of buzz during the high season. But of course, that also means it's perfectly well-equipped for your stay.

In Zhapo Bay, you can also visit the Maritime Silk Road Museum. It's a fascinating stop if you enjoy uncovering the local history, as it explains how these shores were once part of ancient trade routes.

Top tip: avoid Chinese public holidays if you're looking for some peace and quiet, and be sure to book your accommodation well in advance during the summer.

As a frequent business traveler to Guangzhou, the Jianguo Hotel is always my go-to. I genuinely recommend it to all business travelers – it's my absolute must-stay whenever I'm in Guangzhou! The location is unbeatable, right next to Guangzhou East Railway Station and a subway entrance, making commutes to Shenzhen and Hong Kong, or getting around the city's various business districts, incredibly convenient. There are plenty of malls and restaurants nearby, so all your dining and shopping needs are easily met. The hotel's service is meticulous and thoughtful; the front desk and dining staff are always responsive. The rooms are quiet and tidy, perfect for both working and resting, making for an excellent business trip experience. The biggest surprise, though, was the hotel breakfast. It used to be over a hundred RMB per person, but now it's only 58 RMB – incredible value for money! The variety of food is extensive, with a dedicated whole-grain section featuring corn, sweet potatoes, and various whole-grain pastries. They also offer a wide selection of freshly baked bread, Cantonese dim sum, made-to-order noodles, fresh fruits, and a range of teas and coffees. Whether you're looking for something light and healthy or a hearty meal, they've got you covered. A good breakfast before meeting clients really energizes you for the whole day. Considering the location, service, and dining, this hotel is my top choice for business trips. I'll definitely be staying at Jianguo Hotel on all my future visits to Guangzhou!

We booked this hotel specifically for the 40th-floor kids' club, but it turned out to be a bit of a letdown. We came to Guangzhou with our child, and after seeing many reviews praising the Westin's indoor kids' club on the 40th floor, we decided to stay here. Unfortunately, the kids' club was quite disappointing – there was a strong, pungent smell inside. I'm not sure if it's been recently renovated, but even as an adult, I felt a bit dizzy after a few minutes, let alone letting my child play in there. On top of that, it only opens at 12 PM daily, and there wasn't a single staff member in sight, which honestly made me a bit uneasy. However, putting the kids' club aside, the rest of the hotel was excellent. Our stay on the executive floor was very satisfying, with attentive service. The breakfast selection was rich and varied, with plenty of options for both adults and children. The location is also very convenient, close to shopping and dining. While the heated pool isn't huge, the water temperature was comfortable and perfectly adequate for children to splash around in. Overall, if you're booking this hotel solely for the kids' club, like we did, you might want to reconsider. I hope the hotel addresses the indoor air quality issue, as health and safety are paramount when traveling with children. However, if you're here for a business trip or prioritize the executive benefits, this hotel is definitely worth staying at.

Pros: The hotel has an excellent location, close to many well-known restaurants and shopping malls, making it very convenient to get almost anything you need. The staff were polite and always greeted us warmly. They also tried their best to fulfil my requests noted in the booking remarks. As I was travelling with elderly parents, they kindly arranged anti-slip mats for every bathroom. Many tables were also fitted with protective coverings to help reduce the risk of injury. Cons: The bathroom floor towel had a lipstick stain. I also requested a bolster, but instead received two pillows tied together, which was a bit disappointing. The lift can be quite slow. Overall: My parents and I enjoyed our stay at Fraser and would consider staying again!

I originally booked this hotel for the pool, but unfortunately, it was closed for cleaning, so I didn't get to use it. The location is super convenient, very close to Guangzhou East Station, which was one of the main reasons I chose it. There are also plenty of food options nearby, and it's easy to get to tourist attractions. Overall, it offers good value for money. They even provided a complimentary kids' amenity set, which was a nice touch.

The concierge on the first floor proactively helped with our luggage upon arrival. Check-in on the 5th-floor lobby was quick and smooth; Marriott's service awareness is quite good. The pool's hydro-massage was excellent for relieving a day's travel fatigue. The location is unbeatable, right next to Zhengjia Plaza, a perfect spot for kids and all your dining needs.

Decided to stay at a 5* hotel as it was my birthday. Room was smaller than expected and the check in lady said room was upgraded which didn’t appear to be as room appeared to be basic. As it was my bday i asked the hotel if they had anything complimentary for someone celebrating their bday to which she said fruit platter then added some dim sum..acceptable but would be nice if they arranged without me asking. Hotel is a bit old and they were renovating so very noisy during day. The breakfast was very good as had good variety of food. Location is also convenient as 2 mins from metro. Reception is big but not enough seats All in all would hv expected something more for a 5* hotel

I've stayed at many hotels, and this Sofitel stay easily makes it into my top three. It's not about how luxurious it is, but rather how effortless and comfortable the stay felt. The room layout was well-designed, the light switches and outlets were conveniently placed, and the bathroom towels were thick and absorbent – getting these details right really makes a difference to the experience. For service, Dion and Mia💖🍥 truly stood out. When I checked in, I mentioned that I'm a light sleeper and sensitive to noise. They immediately checked room availability and switched me to an inner-facing room. As expected, I slept wonderfully those two nights, with absolutely no noise. Dion even messaged me after I checked out to say I'm welcome back anytime and to contact them in advance if I have any special requests. Their attentiveness in listening to guests' needs and then following through is truly rare and commendable. Five-star rating, well-deserved.

The room was excellent, with a good amount of space. The front desk upgraded us to a high-floor smart room, which was spotlessly clean. The disposable amenities were a bit basic but covered the essentials, and the toiletries for washing and showering were of good quality. The service was also great; perhaps because of the high temperatures during the day, the hotel even provided herbal tea to every guest, which was very much appreciated! Although this hotel is rated 4-star, I felt it was better than some 5-star hotels in Guangzhou. The breakfast and lunch offerings were both very good, and there's even morning tea available on the top floor. We didn't even need to go out for food during this trip to Guangzhou, as we could enjoy authentic local cuisine right in the hotel. It offered incredible value for money and was a really fantastic experience.

Oakwood Premier is extremely convenient - just one metro station ride on Line 1 from Guangzhou East rail station, and <10 mins walk from Exit A. The check in, restaurant and housekeeping staff members are courteous and responsive to our needs - extra towels, restaurant bookings etc. It is a welcoming change from other hotel chains in other countries which we experienced lately. The room is clean and spacious. There is however too many furniture (probably due to accommodating long term guests who need plenty of storage). Less furniture would be ideal with more walking space and effective opening of doors, eg bedroom door, if open, will block access to the wardrobe door. The breakfast buffet spread is sufficient - Chinese and western dishes. The dining room is huge, bright and spacious with large windows. The F&B knowledge could be improved though eg having available the appropriate condiments with the buffet items (calamari rings, delicious but no dips to go with), fresh waffle with no maple syrup (just 4 different fruit jams and 1 peanut butter options), crispy bacon (but not cripsy in reality), Chinese dim sum (with no chili oil/sauce, vinegar etc) at lukewarm temperature (the steaming switch was deliberately kept at OFF though I switched it to ON several times.) We will be back though. The value is in the location, clean and spacious room. Not the food.

I specifically chose to stay at the Garden Hotel in Guangzhou this time and experienced the full package: guest room, executive lounge, CAN guided tour, and breakfast at the Revolving Restaurant. It truly gave me a taste of what the pinnacle of hotel service in Guangzhou is like. The entire stay was comfortable and reassuring, with no unpleasant surprises, and every aspect exceeded my expectations with its generosity and thoughtfulness. Upon checking in, I had booked a basic room. I paid 20 RMB at the 'Seafood Market' (referring to a loyalty program sign-up) to get a Lingkehui Gold Card. After calling staff beforehand to link my information, I was informed I could get a free upgrade to a Kapok Suite and also receive a welcome fruit platter. It was straightforward and generous, immediately dispelling any concerns I had about formulaic service from an old-established hotel. The upgraded room was spacious, featuring a warm and elegant Lingnan-style wooden design. The bedding was soft and skin-friendly, the bathroom had a separate wet and dry area, and all toiletries were well-stocked. On the first night, I discovered the air conditioner was leaking. After calling service, a staff member arrived within five minutes, promptly fixed the issue, and maintained a polite attitude throughout. Afterwards, the floor supervisor even called to apologize and offered a souvenir. Their immediate response to issues, without shirking responsibility or delaying, and their impressive efficiency were remarkable. The executive lounge on the 4th floor was a major highlight of this trip. During afternoon tea, pastries were continuously replenished, with a limitless supply of various savory and sweet treats. It was quiet and not crowded, perfect for a break and a chat. In the evening, happy hour offered samosas, cold cuts, creamy pasta, and small portions of hot dishes. Although it got a bit noisy during peak hours, staff were always diligent in clearing tables promptly, showing great efficiency and professionalism. The waitresses could even mix 'Cuba Libre' and 'Gin and Tonic,' and I could ask them to prepare drinks. The hotel's exclusive CAN guided tour was a unique experience. The guide led us through the gold foil murals in the lobby, the central courtyard waterfall, and the art collection, meticulously explaining the hotel's forty-plus-year history and the clever touches of Lingnan design. From the golden dragons on the ceiling to the red bridge in the courtyard, every detail had a story. The guide was patient and thorough throughout the explanation, actively stopping for guests to take photos and recommending lesser-known spots within the hotel. The tour was unhurried, and any questions were answered in detail, allowing for a deep understanding of this garden hotel hidden in the city center. The next morning, I went to the Revolving Restaurant on the 30th floor for a buffet breakfast. The 360-degree slowly rotating view offered panoramic cityscapes, with the Canton Tower visible in the distance. The food balanced Cantonese flavors with international cuisine; the freshly steamed shrimp dumplings and Jidi porridge were authentic and delicious, while Western omelets, cold cuts, fresh fruit, and baked goods were all well-stocked. Staff constantly cleared empty plates and proactively refilled drinks, and there was no long wait for window seats, creating a relaxed and pleasant dining atmosphere. From the front desk and room maintenance to executive lounge service, the CAN tour guide, and restaurant staff, everyone I encountered maintained a consistently gentle and polite demeanor. Two things impressed me the most: first, their zero-delay approach to problem-solving, responding swiftly to requests and resolving issues properly; and second, the genuine and generous room upgrade, given without upselling or conditions, purely offering tangible benefits to guests. As a platinum five-star hotel with many years of deep roots in Guangzhou, the Garden Hotel doesn't rely on flashy gimmicks. It earns its reputation through tangible details, efficient service, and generous hospitality. Whether for a short getaway or an extended stay in the city, it provides a stable and comfortable experience. This thoughtfulness and meticulousness truly make it a benchmark for hotel service in Guangzhou. I will definitely choose it again on my next visit to Guangzhou.

No frills, just beautiful scenery at every turn, adorned with pink or purple flowers. There's no revolving door, but someone always opens the door for you when you come and go. There are always staff guiding you to the elevator, and someone to help with your luggage, open car doors, and handle bags. The pool has three lifeguards, and drinks and water are complimentary. Towels are UV-sterilized and handed directly to you. In the evenings, turndown service is completed, and breakfast tags are neatly placed. You'll never see anyone walking around in slippers because the guest room notice prohibits it in public areas. Everything is service-oriented. Next time, I'll still choose The Ritz-Carlton. It's well worth the money. A good brand hotel should absolutely avoid becoming a family resort; it ruins everything! However, the soundproofing of the room door is lacking, and the noise from guests entering and exiting the adjacent room in the morning can be quite loud.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Surprise Suite Upgrade! Absolutely Perfect Experience! My stay at China Hotel Guangzhou this time was such a pleasant surprise! I originally booked a standard room, but to my delight, our customer manager Sandy thoughtfully upgraded us to a suite for free 🏠! The space was huge, offering plenty of room to move around, and having a separate living room and bedroom meant we didn't disturb each other's schedules – absolutely ideal for a family trip! The room had an expansive view, and the floor-to-ceiling windows provided excellent natural light ☀️. The food street on the first floor is also a must-visit; the bamboo pole noodles were perfectly springy, and the winter melon and fish porridge was delightfully fresh and sweet. It was both convenient and authentic dining. The hotel's location right by the subway entrance made getting around incredibly easy. We had a great stay at this hotel in Guangzhou and would definitely recommend it, especially for families. The rooms are spacious, with two double beds and a separate bedroom with a door for extra privacy. There’s also a separate kitchen, a washing machine, a large fridge with a freezer, and a microwave. Everything was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, and the staff were friendly and helpful. If you’re lucky enough to get a room facing the Canton Tower, you’ll have an amazing view, especially at night when the tower lights up. The only small downside is that although the room has a kitchen, it doesn’t come with pots, pans, cutlery, or other cooking utensils. It wasn’t an issue for us, but it’s worth knowing if you plan to cook. A big plus is the 7-Eleven located right in the lobby. We also highly recommend the Thai restaurant on the ground floor. It’s an excellent choice for breakfast and for anyone who enjoys Thai food. The dishes are beautifully presented, high quality, and delicious. Their fresh coconuts, smoothies, and pineapple drinks are especially worth trying. The location is another highlight. The hotel is next to a metro station, making it easy to get around the city. Several attractions are within walking distance, and there are good transport connections to other metro lines. It’s around 20 minutes from Canton Tower and about 30 minutes from the wholesale markets, making it a great base for both sightseeing and shopping. There are also several good restaurants on the street behind the hotel. Overall, this is a comfortable, well-located hotel with spacious family-friendly rooms, excellent transport links, and great dining options. We’d happily stay here again

Location & Surroundings: The hotel is situated in Huacheng Hui Central, surrounded by numerous shopping malls, making it convenient for shopping and dining. From the hotel lobby, you can see the Canton Tower and the East and West Towers. The only minor inconvenience is that the hotel lobby is on the 22nd floor, while guest rooms are on floors below the lobby. So, every time you return to your room, you have to take one elevator to the 22nd floor, and then another elevator down to your room floor. Service: Overall, the service was quite good, but food deliveries are not allowed to be brought to the room; only other types of deliveries are permitted. Room Layout & Facilities: I stayed in a twin room. The room's layout and flow weren't very practical. Upon entering, you have to navigate a narrow turn before reaching the bedroom area. The shower and bathtub are right next to each other, and there are very few flat surfaces in the room to place belongings, including by the bedside.

I found the front desk service quite subpar. I waited in line for ages, and several male receptionists kept ignoring me or shunting me to a different queue. They were busy chatting casually with the guests in front of them and didn't bother calling the next person. They spent half an hour on pointless conversation, and it felt like it would never end. I was so annoyed waiting that they finally called out a female receptionist from the back to help me with my room card. Also, in the lobby, we were dragging our luggage around, and no staff member came over to offer assistance. Overall, I felt there was hardly any service. There's no self-service laundry room, which I think is a significant drawback. Since there are no room service robots, I had to go up and down to collect my food orders every time, which was a real hassle. The room hygiene was good, but I find it incredibly stingy for a five-star hotel to charge for a tiny bit of coke and other items in the minibar. Many hotels now offer complimentary minibars. To sum it up: excellent location, outdated facilities, and a poor service experience.

Surrounding the city, you'll find some real hidden gems that many people overlook. And of course, once you start looking, you'll discover that it's not just about shopping centres and skyscrapers: there are also World Heritage landscapes, traditional temples, and mountains that look like they've been plucked straight out of an epic film.

The truth is, in just a matter of hours, you could be wandering through red rock formations or admiring wood carvings that have been there for centuries.

Let's break it down.

🏞️ Danxia Mountain

A mountain landscape collage featuring red rock formations and a river winding through lush greenery

Just 2.5 to 3 hours from Guangzhou by train and car, Mount Danxia is one of the most striking and photographed natural excursions in southern China. And that's no exaggeration. The truth is, this red sandstone landscape, shaped by millions of years of erosion, has an almost Martian feel to it.

It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and is famous for formations such as the "Heavenly Pillar Rock" and the "Maiden's Stone".

Once a foreign concession in the 19th century, its European influence is still beautifully evident today in the charming facades and magnificent churches, such as the stunning Our Lady of Lourdes.

Beaches near Guangzhou: Where to escape the heat in Guangdong 🏖️

Collage of pale sandy beaches with parasols and a sweeping coastline under a partially cloudy sky

When the heat starts to turn up in Guangzhou, no amount of air conditioning can quite do the trick. That's the moment when all you really crave is the sight of the open sea.

The South China coast is much closer than it seems, and in just a few hours, you can swap the asphalt for sand and the skyline for the horizon.

If you're looking for beaches near Guangzhou to escape the city for a while, here are three fantastic options:

🌊 Xichong Beach

To start with, Xichong Beach is often the top choice for those looking for somewhere a little less urbanised. It's located in the Dapeng area, about three hours from Guangzhou via a combination of high-speed train to Shenzhen and then a taxi or local bus.

You won't find any skyscrapers looming behind the beach here. Instead, you've got rolling green hills, the open sea, and that wonderful feeling of a spontaneous getaway. Plus, it's known for its gentle surf—nothing too extreme, but just enough to liven up your day.

How to get there:

  • Guangzhou–Shenzhen high-speed train (approx. 1 hour)
  • Taxi to Xichong (1.5–2 h)

Guide price:

  • Beach access: £1.50–3.50
  • Shared taxi from Shenzhen: £13–£21 depending on the season

☀️ Dameisha Beach

If you're looking for ultimate ease, Dameisha Beach is probably the most accessible of the beaches near Guangzhou. It's also located in Shenzhen, and the journey takes around 2.5–3 hours in total.

It's a bit more urban, yes. But of course, that has its perks: showers, restaurants, supermarkets nearby, and full facilities. It's ideal if you're travelling in a group or if you just don't want to worry about the logistics.

How to get there:

  • High-speed train to Shenzhen
  • Take Metro Line 8 to Dameisha

Guide price:

  • Entry: Free! (Just a friendly heads-up: during peak season, they might need to manage visitor numbers to ensure everyone has a wonderful time!)
  • Total transport: £17–£30 return

🌅 Zhapo Bay

And if you're looking for something a bit more substantial, Zhapo Bay is a whole different story. It's about four hours from Guangzhou, in the Hailing Island area. It's more of a weekend getaway than a quick day trip, but it's definitely worth it.

The beach here is wonderfully spacious, with a distinct holiday atmosphere and plenty of hotels and restaurants specialising in fresh seafood. It's also linked to the Maritime Silk Road Museum, so there's much more to do than just soak up the sun.

How to get there:

  • Direct bus from Guangzhou (3.5–4 h)
  • Private car or organised tour

Guide price:

  • Beach: Free
  • Average hotel per night: £34–£68
  • Return transport: £21–£43
