Quickest way from London to Bristol: Train
Cheapest way from London to Bristol: Coach
Our recommended way to travel: Train
Why? Trains from London to Bristol are fast, comfortable, and frequent, taking as little as 68 minutes to reach the city centre. While coaches are generally more affordable, they take longer and are more susceptible to traffic delays. Flying is rarely a viable option for this route, while driving can be pleasant, but only outside of peak hours.
London to Bristol by train
Travelling by train is easily the fastest and most convenient way to get from London to Bristol. Services are operated by Great Western Railway (GWR) and depart from London Paddington, heading directly to Bristol Temple Meads—the city’s main railway station, located near the Harbourside and city centre.
Key facts:
- Journey time: ~1h 15m – 1h 45m
- Departures: Every 15–30 minutes during the day
- Operators: Great Western Railway (GWR)
- Ticket prices: From around £35 (Advance), rising to £80+ for last-minute flexible fares
Trains are modern and equipped with Wi-Fi, power sockets, luggage storage, and air conditioning. First Class is available with extra legroom and at-seat service—worth considering if you're travelling during busy hours.
Off-peak fares and Railcard discounts (16–25, Senior, Two Together, etc.) can bring costs down significantly. Booking 2–6 weeks ahead generally offers the best prices. And with GWR’s Delay Repay policy, you’ll be compensated for significant service disruptions.
London to Bristol by coach
Coaches between London and Bristol are a perfect budget-friendly option, especially for casual travellers, students, or those booking at the last minute. Travel times are longer than the train, but fares are incredibly low, particularly when booked in advance.
Coach providers:
- National Express: Hourly departures from Victoria Coach Station, stopping at Bristol Bond Street and Coach Station (Marlborough St)
- megabus and FlixBus: Cheaper alternatives, often departing from London Victoria or Hammersmith and arriving near Bristol UWE or the city centre
Key facts:
- Journey time: ~2h 30m – 3h depending on time and traffic
- Price: Approx. £5 – £15 (advance fares); typically £8–£15
- Frequency: Hourly or better during the day
Modern coaches include Wi-Fi, USB charging, reclining seats, and toilets. However, delays are common due to London traffic, especially during rush hour or holidays. Overnight coaches are available too—useful for saving on accommodation!

London to Bristol by car
Driving from London to Bristol can be a rewarding option if you want the freedom to stop en route, visit nearby attractions like Stonehenge or the Cotswolds, or if you’re travelling in a group. That said, the M4 can be heavily congested, particularly near Reading and Swindon.
Recommended route:
- Via M4: Join the M4 westbound from Central London via the A4 or M25, then follow signs for Bristol (M32)
Tip: Avoid peak hours on the M4 and M32 into the city centre. Traffic around Bristol can build up fast during rush hours and weekend events.
Key facts:
- Journey time: 2h 00m – 3h 30m depending on traffic
- Distance: ~120 miles
- Fuel/tolls cost: Around £30 – £60 (round trip), depending on vehicle and prices
- Toll roads? No, but London Congestion Charge applies if departing from the centre
Parking in Bristol:
Bristol isn’t the easiest city to park in—spaces are limited and often expensive in the centre. Look for:
- Cabot Circus Car Park – ideal for shopping
- Temple Gate Car Park – close to Temple Meads Station
- Park & Ride – convenient and cheaper, especially for day trips
London to Bristol by plane
Despite both cities having their own airports, flying between London and Bristol isn’t a viable option for most travellers. There are no direct commercial flights between London’s airports and Bristol Airport (BRS). Any route would involve stopovers—usually in cities like Amsterdam, Dublin, or even Edinburgh.
Why it doesn’t make sense:
- Total travel time: 7h to 14h 30m (including check-in, layovers, and airport transfers)
- Flight cost: £40 – £150+, often with baggage fees
- Availability: Very limited schedules; mostly indirect routes
By the time you've navigated check-in queues, airport security, and transfers, you could have reached Bristol three times over by train. The environmental cost also makes this option hard to justify.
Unless you're connecting from an international flight at Heathrow or Gatwick, skip the plane for this route.
