We booked a room for the Spring Festival holiday as a family of three. During the day, we visited Ouchi-juku and Goshikinuma, and stayed at Higashiyama Onsen in the evening.
The hotel is a very Japanese-style hotel. Although the facilities are a bit old, they are very well maintained and considered a high-end onsen hotel. Upon arrival, the front desk asks you to change your shoes and then helps you carry all your luggage to your room. A staff member even comes to the hotel to welcome you and personally introduces you to the hotel facilities.
The onsen itself isn't large, but it completely faces the hillside outside the window, allowing you to soak while enjoying the snowy scenery. It's perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation.
We booked a package including breakfast and dinner because the location is very remote, and it's very cold in winter, so there are definitely no restaurants nearby. Breakfast and dinner were excellent, served in a private room, and everyone ate their fill. The food was delicious and very Japanese.
Overall, it was a great experience, but transportation is inconvenient. We rented a taxi and drove from the JR station, which took 15 minutes. If you take the bus to Higashiyama Onsen, you have to walk uphill for a few minutes after getting off.
At night, you can hear the stream flowing outside the hotel, which is very white noise, and I slept quite well. The hot spring hotels here are all built along the stream, so I guess it must be very cool in the summer.
