My husband and I wanted to ride the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad in Bryson City, so we looked for a place to stay nearby. From the website, Lakeview at Fontana looked wonderful. In reality, it was pretty bad. Upon arriving, there is no one to greet you. Everything is done by text and your room is left open with the key hanging by the door. I will say that the room was nice and clean and the bed was very comfortable, but there was no closet or hooks to hang your coats and clothes and only three lamps which was not enough lighting to even read by at night. There is no TV and internet/phone was spotty. The thing that bothered me the most was how unsafe the walkways and stairwells are. All of the guests we saw were older (we are in our 70s) and to have stairwells with no railings and access to the rooms where you had to climb over broken cinderblocks and an open gas line are dangerous. They really need do some updating and repair work. The soaking tub cabanas were unusable while we were there since they are open to the outside and it was cold and windy. There is no breakfast provided (hooray for the close-by Ingles where we bought groceries to make our own breakfast). There was no yoga in the mornings. There was no wine and cheese at 5 p.m. as had been advertised. The lounge is dark and there is no one there to sell drinks or snacks although there was a cooler with sodas and water available on the "honor system." All in all, it was a very disappointing stay. We ended up leaving two days early, forfeiting our money because there was nothing to do at the "resort" and it was so cold and windy we couldn't hike or do outside activities. They really need to update their website and be more honest about what is and isn't available. It is certainly not a "boutique spa" as they advertise. We won't go back. P.S. The train ride was wonderful and really salvaged our trip for us!
