On our second trip to Jaguar Reef and 5th to Belize, I knew what to expect and was so pleased upon arrival that it hadn't changed much even though there where some new buildings. It still has beautiful rooms with plunge pools, great drinks, and beautiful grounds. I must say, the room we had appeared basically brand new, even though we stayed in the same one 4 years ago. However, there where a few disappointments. 1. The food was hit or miss. Some things were delicious, creative, interesting - even special. Others were almost laughably bad. Overall, I think the good outweighed the bad. May not be for everyone, but some of the chef's creations were really well done modern dishes. Still, if I'm at the beach, i expect fish to be on the money and it wasn't. Inedibly tough snapper in Belize? 2. Not sure why, but housekeeping didn't come untill late afternoon - which was unexpected and a bit inconvenient, but not a big deal. Once I ran into the staff member who was to clean our room and asked when she would get to it. She said within the hour. So we hung out, then went out and returned two hours later to the room not cleaned - this was around 4:30 or 5pm. She appeared and asked if we were ready for our room to be cleaned. I asked why she hadn't done it already and she said she was told to do something else at that time. Again, this isn't the end of the world, but it was a bit annoying. I wouldn't even mention it were it not for the next issue. 3. We had laundry done and when I was packing up the evening before check out I found one of my shirts had been stained with what appeared to be bleach or powder detergent. I brought it to the front desk and asked them what could be done. They said they would try and fix it. No problem, lets see what happens. So, before checkout they return the shirt and say they couldn't fix it. Ok. I expected some kind of offer to make things right but none came. I said, at least you ought to credit us the charge for the laundry (12.50 US), which they did after i asked. Again, this isn't the end of the world. It was a 4 year old linen shirt. The problem is that i shouldn't have had to ask for that meager credit. 4. Lastly, and this is purely subjective, but I feel this hotel ought to decide what it is and not try to be all things. Its hard to be a romantic boutique hotel, a family hotel, a party hotel, and a condo residence all at the same time. Maybe it's in transition. You have kids playing on a rope swing at the big dock along side a bar playing raunchy dance music. You have an idyllic private plunge pool with a view of a raucous get together at another private plunge pool. Maybe it's fine, but just not for me. I do want to say Modesty at reception and Andy at the restaurant were super, as were all the bartenders at the main bar and the big dock. Overall, it's a really beautiful place that we probably will not return to.
