Hilton Houston Plaza/Medical Center

Houston|0.84km from Rice University
A Stage IV cancer diagnosis makes your world stop: so many unknowns, so many decisions, so much uncertainty. When seeking treatment at MD Anderson, I selected to stay at the Hilton Medical Center. As a Gold Status member, certain privileges like room upgrades and food credits are afforded to the customer. I have been staying at this hotel on each trip to MD Anderson Cancer Center since October of 2022. Most times, my stay had to be modified, either extended or shortened. This is quite common, and, as the hotel staff acknowledged, something they work with on a daily basis. When undergoing treatments, flexibility is key. I have never had an issue modifying my stay. Sadly, this was not the case on my most recent trip in February 2023. I was booked for a two night stay, but had to go home a day early because I was literally too sick to undergo chemotherapy. When I checked out about 10AM, a manager (Karla) informed me she had chosen to enforce the one night penalty policy. This had NEVER been done before, and when I expressed my concern, she told me several different versions of untruths. She said the ”policy had changed” and also that she ”tried to remove the charge and the computer would not allow her to do so.” When I called the Hilton Honors Customer Service, I spoke with Carl who explained that the policy states that the hotel ”may” charge fees. It is at the discretion of the hotel employee. Carl called the hotel and spoke with Courtney, who said I would not be charged for the additional night. But, Karla would have none of it. I was going to have to pay. On a follow up call with Karla on Tuesday, she refused to grant me the courtesy of waiving the cancellation penalty. She did acknowledge that the courtesy of waiving penalties had been granted in the past, but she was choosing to penalize a loyal Gold Status cancer patient who was so sick she had to return home immediately. I am extremely disappointed in how this situation was handled.

Hotel Zaza Houston Museum District

In a nutshell, the most basic rooms are immaculate with comfortable beds and good water pressure – upgrade from there to some of the most eclectic spaces you can imagine. The restaurant has a diverse menu, and the bar has lots of original cocktails. The pool has plenty of umbrellas but not too many chairs to feel crowded and has a bar/bar menu that means you can stay all day. The location is close to several museums, the zoo, and other popular spots. You can walk or request to be driven via an elite SUV (maybe driven by Mo, if you are lucky!). Already sounds like the perfect place to stay, right? My husband and I live outside the loop so whenever we attend an event or have some other reason to drive into town, we like to stay overnight and make a stay-cation out of it. We’ve bounced around hotels for years depending on what was closest to whatever we were doing until we stayed at Hotel ZaZa for the first time in January. We were so impressed with the staff and accommodations that we actually cancelled dinner reservations elsewhere just to dine at the Monarch. We were not disappointed – the food is amazing! We haven’t had anything we didn’t like yet, but I highly recommend the lamb lollipops. Truth be told, Will was our server when we stopped by for cocktails on our way to an outside restaurant and he was the reason we stayed there for dinner instead. Will is truly a gem and we look for him whenever we stay at ZaZa now which has become at least every other month or so. I think he recognizes us despite the crowds that come and go, but maybe it’s just because he knows how to make every person he serves feel valued. Since our first stay this year, we have looked for excuses to return because we know we will have a good experience. Have things ever gone wrong? Yes – our room’s AC went out during our last stay but when the cause couldn’t be immediately rectified, we were moved to another room on the spot. Hotel ZaZa’s employees are empowered to make things right promptly and make right things better somehow. That doesn’t seem to be the “norm” anymore so when you find a place like Hotel ZaZa, you don’t want to stay anywhere else. Again, it’s that feeling of being valued as a customer. We’re looking at our calendars now to schedule more stay-cations in the near future!

Texas Medical Center Houston|1.72km from Rice University
Okay - positive first. It's located very close to MD Anderson hospital. Rooms are suite sized. Full kitchen except no oven but there is a dishwasher. Large fridge. Two a/c units makes it easy to cool the bed area for sleeping while keeping the sitting area warmer. Larger than usual tv maybe 40”. They do take animals. Now - why I only rated this property a 2. After reading about the pet policy, I guess I missed that this particular location charged $58 for our two dogs. So the reasonable priced property became a higher end when we could've stayed at Red Roof or La Quinta for less. But even being more expensive the close proximity to the medical facilities would have been mitigation. But - when we walked in our shoes stuck to the floor which isn't carpeted!!! How is it even possible to mop a floor and leave a sticky surface??? We knew from there that we couldn't expect their cleaning regime to be acceptable. The kitchen had a dishrag and no other supplies. So if you expect to use the kitchen you'll have to bring everything - dishes, cooking utensils, silverware, dish soap, - everything. So for a night or two stay it's pretty useless. Even worse that there is NO COFFEE POT! We were also unable to get an accessible room with a king or two beds. I don't know whether they actually do have them but were just unavailable but it seemed they didn't even have them. And no explanation tells you how high the toilets are in accessible rooms. The toilet is even lower than a standard toilet so beware to those of us with bad knees. Definitely not a senior friendly property. Also if you want to stream on your iPad - you'll have to pay $5.99 a day for hi speed internet. Nice big shower but no tub and no extra wash clothes or towels. One per person. All in all I was disgusted with the place. We should have stayed a bit further out and will in the future. It could be a great place. They could offer accessible rooms that are actually useable. Provide 2 washcloths per person and two bath towels. Maybe offer a kitchen package to make it useable for short term renters. So many opportunities to make people welcome and comfortable. But for goodness sake they really need to do a better cleaning job!!!

Hotel location is very good, in the subway DRYDEN station, 8 minutes from the DRYDEN Metropolitan Museum area three stations, there is a ticket vending machine on the subway platform for 1.25 dollars within three hours. The subway is parallel to the motorway on the road in front of the hotel. It is convenient to use the underground passage. There is a bathtub in the big bed room. The softness and hardness of the bed are suitable. It is suitable for a family of three. I feel comfortable living in the museum area ZAZA!

Since it is a motel at reasonable prices, I am surprised for comfort, cleaning and care of the rooms. Large and free parking. Educated and friendly staff. Finally USB takes on the comforts to load the smartphone. In a strategic position, I recommend it at 100 percent

Stayed in a suite for one day, two days in a concierge room type, and lived in this standard room type again. Facts have proved that the standard room type is the best cost-effective, if there is no higher requirement, this room type is very good.

The location is in the city center, by hospital and university (RICE), facilities and conditions are good. Meet Hotel level, but offer a rich breakfast like Motel. Parking is convenient, either in the basement or in the yard. The only caveat is that the entrance is easy to miss. After you miss it, turn right and turn back. highly recommended!
