Room2Board is a good(?) hostel for men and a terrible surf school. I stayed here for 2 nights with a group of 16 women. 5 of the women took a beginner surfing lesson, and a "buddy" of the surfing school, meaning he was not himself an instructor, assaulted one of the women out in the water. Of the group, she's likely the sweetest and gentlest one, so this felt quite deliberate in isolating her farther from the group out in the water and groping and feeling her. When this was brought into attention, the then drunken "instructor" along with his buddy friends working at the surfing school began threatening our friend saying things like "What are you going to try to say?" and calling us "b----es" to his buddies at the bar. His buddy would back him up, saying, "He would never do that." At the height of this, HE began yelling at us and threatening that another of our friend will end up in a ditch and that we better not go out tonight and watch our backs. This man was openly threatening female guests, and NONE of the hostel staff intervened. This was happening right at the hostel bar, which happens to be much of the common area downstairs. The excuse given was that he was not technically a formal employee of the hostel, but it is still under their responsibility as the surf school technically used this man as a contractor for the lesson. We, as the guests, were also being threatened on hostel property. Aside from the assault, the surfing class led the 5 first-timers to waters too rough for beginners and were condescending to someone visually-impaired (without her glasses) for simply needing to take a break. I am pointedly omitting "allegedly" here to this assaulter. Someone clean would have discussed this situation and ended it with an apology but instead claimed he had 12-year-old daughters yet threatened the lives of women openly. The hostel eventually dismissed him off of the premises and locked the gates, but it had ruined our trip due to shock and fear of going out at all. The lesson payments were comped only for the assaulted, but the rest of the women were still charged. In any other property, lessons AND rooms for all should have been comped. It's mere settlement for us not pressing charges, considering we can still pursue this legally. Food? Delicious! Rooms? Great! Linens? Fresh! Bathrooms? Clean! (Although one toilet on the second floor women's bathroom spits back at you. You better open the door, flush then run. Also, WiFi only works in the common area downstairs and even then still incredibly spotty!) We have had a good experience at this hostel until a crisis emerged. Staff had been great, but it's clear that they lack the training to protect the guests and handle crises. The owner's "compensation" was to buy one of the birthday girls cake. On a different note, the same owner was recording us at the beach while we were dressing up. All he had to do was ask, but he continued to direct his camera towards us while very obviously pretendin
