A beautiful drive into the property! I felt like I was back in time. A five star appearance. Inside is another story. As you check in at the desk, the office is visible and not giving the ambiance you would expect, with shelves of papers and in seeming disarray. Met by a lovely young red headed girl, cheery and welcoming. Our room had a beautiful view of the front field and had a Victorian canopy bed- just what we had pictured. But …there was a worn 1980s leather sofa on one wall, dead bugs on the floor by the window, moulding separating, worn chair coverings. Sp**** and mismatched furnishings. Dinner was quite good but terrible service. I finally had to get up and go to another table and tell the waiter to charge our dinner to the room so we could leave. Stephen was a saving grace! He took our bags from the lobby up the stairs. Then he brought ice. Then he was at the bar and showed us around the property, after knowing we would leave too early for the noon tour. Finally, as he passed through the dining room, and he brought our drinks, which we had waited for ad finitum. I actually asked if he owned the hotel! He was a gem. In addition to Stephen, we were delighted at breakfast by a young girl from Portugal. She ran from table to table making sure everyone had what they needed. I did not get her name- cute in glasses! We tipped her what we might have given to the waiter the previous night had he been mildly attentive. A fun experience. Not to be discouraging, just know what you expect. Ask for Stephen!
