Castle stay via a Red Letter Day gift. On arrival to the castle grounds spirits were high ! Excited to see what this hotel had to offer. We tied in with our stay the Land Rover driving experience which was fantastic. Unfortunately the overnight stay in the castle was very disappointing. In a nutshell once there, there is very little on offer for residential guests! No atmosphere within the castle, no grounds to explore without leaving the estate. This venue is obviously geared up for weddings and wedding guests only, who I can imagine would have an amazing experience - however, for those on a mini break away not so amazing. On arrival, after checking in and finding our way to the room up the stone staircase and spiral staircase which was fun, we found our room which was very tired and shabby, chipped furniture, tired bathroom. We were looking forward to finding a nice bar to sit and unwind before our evening meal in the 1851 restaurant. We were disappointed to find there wasn’t a bar open for residential guests - we were advised to go to the Brasserie to get a drink and take to the lounge area. The Brasserie was a very drab room, no windows, no views, lacking atmosphere - more like a cafe than a Brasserie. A couple was having afternoon tea - it was all very underwhelming, not where you would expect to have afternoon tea in a castle! We decided to leave the castle to find somewhere to relax, we found an awesome pub/hotel nearby called the Pheasant Inn. - highly recommended, beautiful pub/food with amazing views! Evening meal in the castle - On the plus side the 1851 restaurant was very nice and the food was good. A buffet style breakfast is also provided in this restaurant which was adequate.
