"Awesome location (very central), clean and comfortable room. Staff were friendly and helpful - we booked a room with a queen bed and single bed, but they upgraded us for free to two queen beds when checking in. Pool is great for winter as it’s heated! Only downsides are that our room got quite warm even when we turned off heaters due to the central heating always being on, but when we opened the windows it was a little loud as the hotel is right next to the main road. Shared kitchen is clean and easy to use but would’ve been great to have a larger fridge, given the number of guests."

Hana Lodge
"We stayed at Hana Lodge as a family group of five families, with ages ranging from 8 to 71 years old. One of the main reasons I chose Hana Lodge was because I wanted to experience the atmosphere of a grand country estate. I also noticed they offered a whole-house rental with a full kitchen and laundry facilities, which was perfect for our large family. However, upon arrival, I realized that the house we rented was a separate unit away from the main lodge and estate building. This was quite disappointing, as it was not what I had expected from the photos and description. Since we were travelling with elderly family members who have some mobility challenges, as well as young children, having to drive between our house and the main lodge was not very convenient. We arrived late on our first evening, and the property was very dark. Combined with the quiet surroundings, it felt a little intimidating at night. However, the next morning completely changed my impression. Driving into the estate during daylight revealed the beautiful grounds and the true manor-like atmosphere that I had been hoping for. The property is peaceful, elegant, and full of character. Breakfast was excellent. There was a buffet selection including bread, fresh fruits, yogurt, cheese, marinated fruits, and cereals. Guests could also choose a main breakfast dish from the menu. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. After breakfast, we explored the grounds. The weather was lovely, the sky was bright blue, and the entire estate looked stunning. We even saw alpacas, which delighted both the children and adults. There was also a beautiful bamboo grove. Unfortunately, the paths were not wheelchair-friendly, and the uneven rocky surfaces made it difficult for our elderly family members to access the area. While walking around, we discovered a pathway connecting the main lodge and our house, which was helpful. Nevertheless, I still felt a little disappointed that the rental house was separated from the main estate, as it reduced the immersive manor experience that I was looking forward to. The house itself is somewhat dated, but everything functioned well. We raised a few issues during our stay, and the staff were patient, helpful, and provided reasonable explanations. Their service was appreciated. For guests visiting in winter and planning to rent the whole house, I would recommend requesting that the unit be pre-heated before arrival. Visitors from warmer countries, especially in Asia, may find the house quite cold when they first arrive. We also had to spend some time figuring out how to operate certain heaters, as there was limited guidance available. That said, the lodge may not have known our specific needs, and we did not inform them in advance that we might require additional instructions. Overall, despite some disappointments regarding the location of the rental house and accessibility challenges for elderly guests, we enjoyed our stay. The estate itself is beautiful, the breakfast is excellent, and the peaceful surroundings make it a memorable place to visit. If I return to Hana Lodge in the future, I would choose a different season, as I imagine the gardens and grounds would be even more spectacular when all the plants are in full bloom."
Black Swan Lakeside Boutique Hotel
"I was scammed by Ctrip. There's no Black Swan at the Black Swan Hotel. Ctrip listed the Black Swan as the top luxury hotel and scenic hotel in Rotorua. The pictures looked exquisite, but upon arrival, it was a complete mess. It wasn't really a hotel at all, but a renovated villa with several guest rooms converted from the original ground floor bedrooms, and a restaurant on the second floor. At just over 2,200 per night, the value was poor. Facilities: Outdated, the tables and chairs were wobbly, the mattress was a bit saggy, and not very comfortable to sleep on. The shower head was water-stained, and the TV was a Konka. For some reason, I felt like the furniture was bought at a secondhand market; it was poor quality and tattered. Cleanliness: The room wasn't cleaned properly. The bath towels and duvet covers were stained, the sink and bathtub weren't cleaned, and the sofa armrests were black. Location: On the lakefront, quite far from the city center, with nothing nearby. Dining out is about a 10-15 minute drive. Despite being called the Black Swan Hotel, we didn't see any black swans during our three-night stay. Instead, there were plenty of black swans and seagulls at the amusement park next to the Municipal Gardens. I recommend staying in Rotorua until around 5:00 PM and then driving an hour to Taupo. The Huka Lodge in Taupo is truly excellent and highly recommended. If you absolutely must stay here, consider the Novotel or Pullman. While the cleanliness and facilities aren't as impressive, they're close to the Municipal Park, supermarkets, and food courts. The lake is also within walking distance, making it easy to feed the black swans, seagulls, and ducks."

"Two couples staying in the the waterfront Lake Cottages 1 and 2 - wonderfully appointed and equipped with fabulous views and privacy. Dinner at The Mains the first night was superb, the second night (a Sunday) much less so. Breakfasts were excellent. Would very happily stay there again."
