Apologies in advance for the length of this, but I have to tell this story.
We are a family of two adults and two tall teenagers who had booked two rooms for three nights on our trip through Europe on the way to Croatia.
We have stayed in one and two-star hotels before, which were significantly cheaper, and we have never experienced anything as disgusting and staff as rude as at this hotel.
We arrived around 6 PM and were met by a rude female evening porter who practically scolded me when I asked why I had to fill out two full pages of personal information for everyone in our party – so it started off really well.
We got our room keys and went up to the 2nd floor where our rooms were located. We unlocked the first room and were met by a terrible stench of something that most likely was mold.
So, the other room could only be better. We got to room two, which was further down the hall – the door was open, towels were on the floor, and the mattresses had no linen on them. Instead, they were covered in large stains, and there was moldy bread on the table.
I went back to the “friendly” evening porter and demanded two new rooms, but was told that they only had one single room available, as all their housekeepers had called in sick. I told her that we were going out to eat and that I expected her to have resolved the problem by the time we returned.
We returned after a few hours, and I approached the reception, where I naturally expected some kind of action had been taken regarding the problem, but nothing had happened. I was told that this is what I should expect for the price and location.
I asked if she had been up to the room to smell how awful it smelled, but she didn't think it was that bad and offered us a freshener spray to take up.
By now, my patience had run out, and I demanded to speak to the manager, but was told that she wouldn't be back until the next day. I asked her to call the person and perhaps looked at her slightly menacingly, so she did as I said.
However, I wasn't allowed to speak to the manager myself at that time, but the porter spoke to her, and with my very poor German, I could understand that she was quite annoyed with me.
The solution became that we were upgraded to their other hotel across the street (where the reception is also located) – but not until the next morning, as there were no available rooms.
This also meant that my wife and I had to spend a night in the room that stank and was definitely a health hazard.
I didn't sleep much that night, and the next morning I went directly over and spoke to the manager to sort out the new rooms at the other “nice” hotel. Here I was met by a somewhat friendlier person who was finally able to give us two new rooms at the nice hotel – though after some wrangling, as she initially only wanted to upgrade one room.
Hotel Neuter Express fully lives up to its bad reputation, and for heaven's sake, do not book accommodation here!
