The Morgan Hotel San Simeon

San Simeon|0.24km from Friends Of The Elephant Seal Visitor Center and Gift Shop
So after a long day of driving south on Pacific 1, both wifey and I were weary and happy to see the Morgan Hotel sign as we came out of the mountains. When we walked into the lobby, there was nice music playing and we were greeted by friendly staff. The room presents nicely when you walk in hence the nice photos online. Then you start seeing the signs of age. The small fridge was very old and door would not close properly. There is no microwave in the room. There was a table fan provided and it was ok to keep you semi cool during the night. Honestly when driving down the Pacific 1, we found it was a common theme when you are close to the ocean so maybe it's not a thing but we found it very strange not having AC in the room. Pros Easy to get to once you emerge from the mountains. It is in San Simeon which is basically a community of hotels. Free parking Pet friendly Comfortable bed and pillows Our room had a fireplace and super comfy couch. Updated bathroom Very nice pool area and breakfast area Cons Very bad internet. I could not even get my laptop to connect! We were at the end of the hall so that may have been part of the cause. I'm a computer guy so internet is important to me. When I finally did get to connect, the speed was less than 1Mbps. This is barely enough to check your email these days. The room was very empty and could easily handle getting rid of the little round side table and adding a nice coffee table in front of the couch OR adding a desk and chair. The room is large but the space is poorly utilized. The TV and remote are a throwback to the 80's. The remote is so old that the finish was rubbing off the back. No sleep timer on the TV. As others have stated the breakfast is terrible. There is basically yogurt and bagels. Nothing is hot, no eggs, no bacon, no sausage. There is ample room to provide a typical continental breakfast and this is the first hotel we've stayed at on our 12 day highway 1 adventure that provided such a bad breakfast. Even the bare basic Best Western hotels have a superior breakfast experience. Summary If you just staying a night and don't care about internet or breakfast, this was a nice clean, reasonably priced hotel with a comfy bed and pillows and clean bathroom.

Pacific Coast Roadhouse, SureStay Collection by Best Western

A temporary hotel on the road, a standard American motel, but it is much more cost-effective than other nearby hotels. Breakfast is also free. It is seven kilometers away from the nearest town and there is a big supermarket in the town.

My wife and I stayed here recently while visiting family in the area. She rates it as 'excellent' overall where I would probably go with a 'very good'. One thing that we didn't like is that their website does not provide enough detail regarding the location of the rooms they offer. Thus when we arrived we found out that my wife, who has enormous difficulty climbing stairs, had to climb a very long flight of stairs to get to our room. I also had to lug our luggage up/down those same stairs. There is no elevator and there was no offer to assist with our luggage by staff. I had called the property ahead to ask questions however, I never got anyone to answer and by the time an employee had called me back it was too late to do anything about getting more details regarding room location, etc. There is ample off-street and street parking in the area and the staff were responsive to requests for additional amenities like toilet paper, soap, pillows, etc. They also offer a complimentary happy hour for guests from 5 - 7 PM every evening where you can get up to two cocktails and some basic finger food. If you are a light sleeper, it can be difficult to sleep as anyone walking in the halls can be heard through the doors and due to the squeaky floors. The pillows they provide were also very poor as they provided no support at all. Overall, if you like to stay in historic properties this place is probably for you. However, I highly recommend making inquiries in advance to ensure you get a room that will meet you needs.
Silver Surf Motel

It was an ok Hotel on my way from San Francisco back to LA, The room is so so and rather damp. The staff are very helpful and polite. There are only 2 restaurant within walking distance but they are pretty expensive for what they are, the hotel will provide you a 20 percent discount for one of the restaurant. Next time I would rather continue my journey and stop at different area such as Morro Bay.
Fireside Inn on Moonstone Beach

The hotel is great right by the Pacific Ocean. I walked along the seaside trail in the morning and saw the sunrise! The hotel has a fireplace and an outdoor hot pool. Although it is not cold in winter, we get up early to watch the sunrise after swimming in the pool and soaked in hot water before leaving. There is no place to eat nearby, you can ask for breakfast to the room plus a little delivery and service charges.
Cambria Landing Inn and Suites

The hotel is close to the sea, the courtyard is actually a little open space at the entrance, there are many hotels around, the so-called suite is just a big room, this hotel is not cost-effective, parking is convenient.
Cavalier Oceanfront Resort

Self-driving Highway 1 is a convenient place to stay, convenient to check in, close to the seaside, spacious rooms, free parking, and rooms have fireplaces but I didn't light up for a long time, making the house full of smoke, haha. There is breakfast but you need to pay separately. Overall, the price is too expensive on weekends.
