The George Hotel of Stamford

We had an evening dinner at The George and it was wonderful. The service was excellent with a very extensive menu and wine list. We started with a relaxed drink in the bar, it was night to remember in the Oak restaurant and will certainly visit again when in Stamford.

The George has always been a favourite place of ours . Today we went with friends for a Sunday lunch looking forward to it as usual , Today however it did not reach our expectations. Starters were fine but the main course very poor we had one Beef from the carvery which was fine and then three Lambs which were so very tough , normally they are nice but not today at £44 each you would expect much better than this . Another ****** we waited to be asked if we would like a Desert as no one came back to us , We caught the attention of the Waitress eventually !! We did complain about the three tough lambs and they did take one off the bill £44 but in my opinion it really was not enough . At no time did anyone come and acknowledge or apologise for this poor main meal , which for a restaurant of this Quality was a shame .

Having stayed at and dined at and loved the George many times during the 90’s we were excited to have brunch there in February 2024 on the way to a family event nearby. We ordered scrambled egg with smoked salmon. It arrived without toast which when asked we were told would be an additional £5! We were presented with 2 slices of sliced pan. Burnt. Which along with the reconstituted dried egg and Pour over coffee was monumentally poor. Our bill was £60+. No need to say any more.

Really very average. We called for coffee and to feed our baby with the hope to have some light lunch. We sat in the garden room as with having a baby looked to be the only available space with enough room. We were given a menu but when I enquired if there was a sandwich menu we were told we could only eat this if we were sat inside ( we would have if there had been space) the table next to us also asked for a sandwich menu to be told the same. I'm not sure how a few more steps outside can be too much work for a few sandwiches. We and the table next to us left without eating.

From the moment we parked up and checked in we thought what a fabulous hotel , it was beautiful and very grand, the staff was very pleasant and well dressed, very courteous and anything required wasn’t too much trouble. Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice, can’t wait to come back soon.

My husband and I have been visiting The George of Stamford for over twenty years which indicates how much we love the place. We stayed last week for six nights and we are still buzzing! What a wonderful time we had enjoying the beauty of the building and gardens, the comfort of our room, the luxury of all the reception rooms, the delicious food at all times of the day and, not least of all, the impeccable service from every member of the staff. Under the recent appointment of Kay as General Manager the hotel continues to offer the highest standard of hospitality. The George attracts an eclectic clientele and easily manages the diverse dynamics of traditional and modern requirements. The plush furnishings perfectly blend the ancient and new and the young staff work in harmony with very experienced staff members. The ambience throughout the hotel is of calm efficiency and, as there is no intrusive background music in The George, all that is heard is the sound of people enjoying themselves. We dined in the Oak Room each evening of our stay and sampled food from several menus all of which was exemplary. We very much enjoyed the seasonal asparagus menu and the return of the dessert trolley! Each dining experience was enhanced by the attentive service of Florian, Luther and George and all the dining room staff. Breakfast in the Garden Room is an experience not to be missed. Again, the ambience is such that it is conducive to a business meeting breakfast, a family gathering or a quiet time with a newspaper. Everything needed for an excellent breakfast is brought to the table and I can think of no better way to start the day than to have Diane bring my breakfast to me in her inimitable calm, warm and efficient way. All the staff are trained to the highest standards. People like Simon who epitomises the ethos of The George with his warmth, friendliness and efficiency. I cannot finish this review without mentioning the housekeeping staff. Good housekeeping is essential to ensure a comfortable and happy stay in any hotel and the housekeeping at The George is quite simply the best I have ever experienced. Our room was cleaned perfectly for us each morning and the evening turn down included a further tidy up and replenishment of bottled water etc and we were greeted with a smile by all the members of the housekeeping team. At the end of our stay at The George we felt pampered and relaxed and we can’t wait to return. Our thanks go to everyone who made us so welcome.

Returned again after gap. Regular client not quite as good some changes. No bread or water jugs dinner oak room tight on coffee sugar service slow at times seems more staff some nights than others. Still very attentive and obliging.Dinner garden room service not as good.

We came for a late lunch in the Garden Room … something we have been doing for over 30 years… indeed there are staff there who still recognise us and greet us. . The standard of service and food has always been excellent, however, yesterday the service we received fell very short of acceptable. The waitress was sullen and clearly was making absolutely no effort to greet and engage appropriately. Steak was ordered and she took the order without asking how we wanted it served; bread was ordered… did not appear … said she forgot … no apology. Beer was not satisfactory … politely asked for an exchange .. this can happen, no apology … just looked annoyed at having to change it … This was not removed from final bill … and then she looked equally fed up at having to alter the bill … still no apology! l hope this was an isolated incident and not a reflection on poor training and or a general deterioration in the quality normally expected from this establishment.

Just returned from another super visit to this fabulous Hotel. Everything about this Hotel is of the highest standard. The Oak Panelled Restaurant and Garden Room offer an amazing variety of dishes, all using only the highest quality. Professional and enthusiastic Staff throughout and the Housekeeping Department do deserve a special mention. So highly recommended.
