It is recommended that Marvão exit the Porta Este De Marvão city gate and go down the hill to the ancient Roman road of Portagem via the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Estrela. The trail takes about 2 hours. Most of the trails are shaded. It goes down the road, and the birds and flowers are scented. The front desk provides free trail maps to Portagem under the mountain, recommends local restaurants and provides the phone number of the taxi driver on the return journey. The hotel is beautiful and has plenty to do. The town is gorgeous too with a castle and beautiful garden to visit, contact the stud farm and book your activities plenty in advance. The mares go in and out of the fields twice a day (week days only) and it's a show not to miss. Also plenty of amazing dogs and cats around. Loved every bit of it"

The room with an impressive four poster bed was a good size and comfortable. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful.
