JR West Pass Guide: Discover Western Japan
With a JR West Pass in hand, the wonders of Western Japan are yours to explore. From the temple-lined streets of Kyoto and the street food culture of Osaka, to the solemnity of Hiroshima, the stunning dunes of Tottori, the iconic art island of Naoshima, and the samurai elegance of Kanazawa, much of what makes Japan so appealing to UK visitors lies in the west. Add in the ancient temples (and deer) of Nara, the sacred mountain monastery of Koyasan, and the magnificent castle at Himeji – all three UNESCO World Heritage Sites – and you begin to realise that Western Japan could fill an entire trip all by itself.

Offering unlimited travel across this region on the JR West rail network, the JR West Pass covers all of the cities and sights listed above on a single pass, ranging from an All Area Pass covering the full network to smaller zone passes for more focused, local exploration. And following the rise in 2023 of the all-Japan JR Passes, which increased in cost by almost 70%, smaller regional passes like these have become the smart traveller's alternative, offering outstanding coverage at a fraction of the cost.

In this guide, we compare every JR West pass option, walk you through the reservation process step by step, and break down the prices and coverage maps, so you can unlock Western Japan with the right pass for you.

JR West Pass Coverage and Map

The JR West Pass covers the central and western portion of Japan's main island, Honshu, with coasts on both its northern and southern shores. Along its southern Sanyo corridor runs the Seto Inland Sea, connecting Hiroshima, Okayama, and Kobe with the Kansai heartland of Osaka and Kyoto, while its northern San'in coast traces the shore along the Sea of Japan to Tottori and Matsue, and a northeastern arm reaches into the Hokuriku region – to Fukui, Kanazawa, and Toyama.

Some of Japan's most celebrated highlights lie within this area, including Hiroshima’s solemn Peace Memorial and the sacred island of Miyajima (ferry included), the temple districts and zen gardens of Kyoto, the shopping streets of Osaka, Kanazawa’s samurai old town, Nara's deer and ancient temple grounds, as well as easy access to Naoshima, the pumpkin-filled art island on the Seto Inland Sea.

Take a look at the map below for the clearest way to see the full extent of the JR West All Area Pass (the full blue region shown above) as well as the complete network, and the best starting point when deciding which zone pass best matches your route.

Choose your Pass by Your Travel Days

From a lightning-speed Kansai city break to a slow journey along the coast of the Sea of Japan, whether you’ve just got one day or a whole week to explore Western Japan, there's a JR West pass to suit every itinerary. Use the guide below to match your trip to the perfect pass.

Short Trips (1-4 Days): Perfect for Kyoto and Osaka Beginners

Starting from just ¥2,800 for a single day, the Kansai Area Pass is one of the most flexible and affordable pass fares in the network. If it’s your first time visiting Kyoto and Osaka, and are looking to make the most of your rail pass, there are two passes that are sure to serve you well.

The Kansai Area Pass (1-4 days, from ¥2,800) covers Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Himeji and Wakayama, and includes the HARUKA express from Kansai Airport. Step off the HARUKA at Osaka and you're just minutes from Dotonbori's famous takoyaki stalls – freshly griddled octopus balls dusted with bonito flakes and mayo, and the perfect first taste of Osaka street food.
The Kansai Mini Pass (3 days, ¥3,000) covers a slightly tighter area (excluding Wakayama and Himeji) but is still outstanding value, with Universal Studios Japan also within reach.

The 5-Day Sweet Spot: Best Regional Bestsellers for Shinkansen Travel

Whether you're timing your visit for hanami beneath Himeji Castle's cherry blossoms or autumn foliage on the Kii Peninsula, Western Japan rewards every season, and there are two 5-day bullet-train passes which put it all within easy reach.

The Kansai WIDE Area Pass (5 days, ¥12,000) extends beyond Kansai to Kinosaki Onsen on the Sea of Japan coast, where guests can wander between wood-panelled bathhouses in yukata robes, or take the Sanyo Shinkansen to visit Okayama and its world-famous Korakuen garden.
The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (5 days, ¥17,000) pushes further west to Hiroshima, and includes the Miyajima Ferry, making it the perfect choice if you’re looking to combine Kansai with the history of the Peace Memorial and the sacred island’s iconic floating torii gate – it also offers the chance to savour Japan's two great okonomiyaki traditions: Osaka-style and Hiroshima-style.

Both passes also cover the Hello Kitty Shinkansen, the instantly recognisable themed train that runs from Shin-Osaka along the Sanyo Shinkansen corridor. Part design statement, part pop culture icon, it's become one of the most popular experiences on the Japanese rail network.

Long-Distance Adventures (7 Days): The Ultimate Western Japan Journey

To extend your reach even further into two dramatically different corners of Western Japan, the Kansai-San'in Area Pass (7 days, ¥18,000) follows the Sea of Japan coast to the breathtaking sand dunes of Tottori and the historic castle town of Matsue, while the Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass (7 days, ¥19,000) heads northeast via the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa, where samurai streets, gold-leaf ice cream and Kenrokuen, another of Japan's most celebrated gardens, could easily fill several days.

JR WEST Rail Passes seat reservation

With some passes including unlimited free reservations and others not covering them at all, seat reservation rules can vary quite substantially. So, it's well worth knowing exactly what's included in your pass before you book.

  • JR PASS Kansai Wide Area Railway Pass (5 days): Unlimited free seat reservations are included on all covered Shinkansen and Limited Express services. From your seventh reservation onwards, bookings must be made at a JR West ticket office rather than at a ticket machine.
  • JR PASS Kansai & Hiroshima Area Railway Pass (5 days): Unlimited free seat reservations are included, covering the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima and all Limited Express services in the pass’s valid area. From your seventh reservation onwards, bookings must also be made at a JR West ticket office.
  • JR Kansai & San'in Area Pass (7 days): Unlimited free seat reservations are included throughout the valid area on all covered services.
  • JR Kansai Mini Rail Pass (3 days): There are no seat reservations included with this pass, as it covers rapid and local trains only. Shinkansen and Limited Express services are not included, so if bullet-train travel is on your wishlist, consider upgrading to a different pass.

Popular Shinkansen routes can sell out fast, especially during peak travel periods, so make sure to reserve early and book your JR West pass on Trip.com.

How to purchase and exchange your JR West Passes via Trip.com

With individual Shinkansen tickets considerably more expensive than a pass, a JR West pass is one of the smartest investments you can make for a trip in western Japan. Once purchased on Trip.com, your exchange order is valid for up to three months, and with seat reservations opening from one month before the date of travel, booking early is recommended for the best choice of times and seats.

Once in Japan, you can exchange your voucher at major arrival hubs including Kansai International Airport (KIX), Shin-Osaka, or Kyoto Station. Read on for a step-by-step guide on how to use your JR West pass, from booking to boarding your first bullet train in Japan.

Step 1: Selecting & Booking Your Pass

Whether it’s a focused few days in Kansai or a week-long adventure across the region, start by choosing the JR West pass that best suits your itinerary. Select your travel start date, pass duration, and number of travellers. Children aged 6-11 travel half price, making it a great option for families. When you're ready, just click "Book Now" to secure your pass.

Step 2: Enter Your Details

Fill in each passenger's details, including name, age, nationality, contact number, and email address. If you have a promo code, you can add it here. Double-check your details to make sure everything is correct before clicking "Continue."

Step 3: Complete Your Payment

Trip.com accepts a wide range of payment methods, including credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, PayPal, and Google Pay. Trip Coins and gift cards can also be applied at checkout. Once payment is confirmed, your booking is secured.

Step 4: Receive Your Voucher

After purchasing your pass, it will arrive either as an e-ticket PDF sent to your email address, or as a physical voucher posted to your home address. One important note: the e-ticket is an exchange voucher, not a travel pass. It cannot be scanned at station gates and will need to be exchanged for a physical pass once you arrive in Japan.

Step 5: Exchange Your Pass in Japan

Once in Japan, head to any JR West exchange location, including Kansai International Airport (KIX), Shin-Osaka, and Kyoto Station. Present your e-ticket or paper voucher alongside your passport, and you'll receive a magnetic JR West pass ready to use. Keep your passport with you throughout your trip, as staff may also ask to see it.

Step 6: All Aboard

With your JR West pass in hand, Western Japan is yours to discover, whether you're bound for Hiroshima by Shinkansen, drifting along the San'in coast, or heading for the spa towns of Hokuriku. Find your platform, board your train, and enjoy the journey.
