I always thought Xiaoxitian was the pinnacle of ancient Shanxi architecture 🤯 Until I walked into Tiefo Temple in Gaoping, Jincheng... Really, I was instantly so overwhelmed that I couldn't speak! That's when I understood what it truly means to feel "the presence of the divine" ✨ The Ming Dynasty painted sculptures throughout the hall carry an imposing aura that makes you hold your breath without realizing it 🏯This is a filming location for Black Myth: Wukong But the scenes in the game don't come close to even a fraction of the awe of seeing it in person! First built in the 7th year of the Dading era of the Jin Dynasty This ancient temple, preserved through the ages holds the pinnacle of Ming Dynasty clay sculpture art Three must-see highlights 👇 1️⃣ Supreme craftsmanship: Wooden frames, iron wire shaping Every single ribbon looks lifelike Even the strands of hair seem to be dancing! 2️⃣ Civil and military deities: On one side, solemn civil officials On the other, fierce warriors with glaring eyes Exaggerated expressions, yet each with its own spirit It feels like they're about to break through the walls at any moment! 3️⃣ Vivid realism: Every statue is a work of art Some with wide, angry eyes, some looking down upon the world This completely shattered my preconceptions about Buddhist temple sculptures! 💡 Practical tips: 📍Address: Outskirts of Gaoping, Jincheng City 🚗Transportation: After arriving in Gaoping, take a 10-minute taxi ride 🕒Best time to visit: 10 AM–2 PM for the most beautiful light 🎫Tickets: Free, but reservations are required (extremely hard to get!) Friendly reminder: You may actually be moved to tears when you enter the hall It's best to prepare yourself mentally beforehand! This is definitely the hidden gem of ancient Shanxi architecture ✨

Two-day tour in Gaoping, Shanxi See Emperor Yan culture and Song-Yuan ancient architecture all at once on day 1 History lovers will be thrilled! 🔹 Emperor Yan’s tomb | tracing the ancestor of Chinese civilization Gaoping is the resting place of Emperor Yan Shennong, the cultural ancestor of the Chinese nation and the origin of Chinese farming civilization. Entering the tomb area, a yellow sandstone avenue with 108 steps leads straight to the Hall of Merit. The plaque reads “Planting grains to start farming, tasting herbs to develop medicine,” summarizing Emperor Yan’s achievements. The ancient “Emperor Yan’s tomb” stele from the Wanli era of the Ming dynasty stands quietly. Inside the hall, murals depict Shennong tasting herbs and making farming tools, creating a solemn atmosphere. 🔹 Yangtoushan Forest Park | Northern Wei grottoes + Emperor Yan relics “Ridge borders two counties, foothills span three towns,” this is both Emperor Yan’s hometown and a secret grotto site from the Northern Wei dynasty. ✅ Emperor Yan’s mark: On the mountaintop are the ruins of Shennong City, Shennong Spring, and grain fields, the place where Emperor Yan “obtained good grain and sowed crops.” Rock carvings show Shennong with a bull’s head and human body holding farming tools, confirming the origin of agriculture. ✅ Grotto wonders: Over 40 caves from Northern Wei to Sui and Tang dynasties are hidden on the mountainside (national protected site). The Buddha statues are dignified and finely carved. The most remarkable is the Yangtoushan statue tower, featuring a reclining sheep carrying a Buddha niche, rare nationwide, blending Emperor Yan’s sheep totem with Northern dynasties’ Buddhist style. The forest is lush and green, every step is history, and every photo looks like a masterpiece. 🔹 Kaihua Temple | Song dynasty ancient architecture + murals “double national treasures” An ancient temple from the Six Dynasties deep in the Taihang Mountains, one of Shanxi’s architectural highlights. Founded in the Northern Qi dynasty, it preserves buildings from the Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The Mahavira Hall (built in 1073) is original Song dynasty architecture with a xieshan roof and deep eaves, perfectly replicating the Yingzao Fashi standards. Inside, 88㎡ of Song dynasty murals (painted in 1096) are masterpieces, with smooth lines and colors still vivid after a thousand years. The content includes Buddhist stories and, together with the Song dynasty painted beams, is known as the “double peak of Song painting.” Few visitors, peaceful and quiet, red walls and ancient trees, every brick and tile shows a thousand years of craftsmanship. 🔹 Wolong Bay wellness town | ending with nature to heal body and mind A 3A wellness secret spot next to Kaihua Temple, where mountains and lakes reflect each other, full of negative oxygen ions. The 400-acre Yangxin Lake ripples with clear water, surrounded by shaded walking paths. Distant mountains look like ink paintings, and nearby water shimmers like mist, as if stepping into a Jiangnan landscape painting. After visiting the ancient sites, take a walk here to breathe fresh air and enjoy the evening breeze, releasing all the day’s fatigue and perfectly ending the cultural journey. Hidden in the rural alleys of southeastern Shanxi, this small temple’s main hall is only 72 square meters but densely packed with 27 towering and majestic Ming Dynasty polychrome sculptures! The moment you step through the hall’s door, the gods and Buddhas seem to come alive—celestial statues with bulging eyes and hair standing on end, some clad in armor, others bare-chested and barefoot. Using a unique local technique of “iron as the bone, iron for shaping,” the fiery halos and flowing ribbons are sculpted with bold, sharp lines, fully unleashing the dramatic tension of Ming Dynasty polychrome art! 💥 The most amazing detail is the suspended sculpture behind the Shakyamuni Buddha altar, which actually depicts the story of the pilgrimage to the West—Tang Monk and his disciples lined up with the White Dragon Horse. day 2 full itinerary ⬇️ 🗺️ Tiebosi Temple ➡️ Cai Zhizhong Art Museum ➡️ Xizhen Suzhuang ➡️ Lianghu Ancient Town ➡️ Busan wellness town · The most stunning parts of day 2 were Tiebosi Temple and Lianghu Ancient Town I will definitely come back for these two places~ … …………………… 🏷️ Tiebosi Temple · listen to the whispers of ancient Buddhas | cast iron Buddha statues gaze through centuries of spring and autumn. Raindrops fall on the flying eaves. Every brick and tile here seems to quietly tell an ancient story. 📜 Cai Zhizhong Art Museum | The museum’s grand introduction flows with the philosophy of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism transformed into lively lines. Immerse yourself inside and discover Eastern humor and wisdom through comics! 🍃 Xizhen Suzhuang | Walking through high walls and deep courtyards on a rainy day, feel the traces of time on the bluestone alleys. This is not a cold relic but a reflection of Gaoping’s wedding culture and a living ancient fortress. ▫️ Lianghu Ancient Town | The well-preserved Ming and Qing architecture is impressive. I especially love the integrated three-carving style. Every pattern and design is intriguing, with exquisite carvings hidden in the flying eaves and upturned corners. I felt the spirit of craftsmanship through the ages here. I naturally slowed down and found a living ancient village. 🌳 Busan wellness town | I originally thought this would be a simple nature retreat. But from guesthouses and ancient buildings to the currency museum and organic picking garden, it offers a one-stop slow living experience! … End of today’s itinerary Though it’s just a short 2-day trip, hi Gaoping 👋 I will be back

this city is filled everywhere with the flavor of time’s passage the slower you “taste” it, the more “flavorful” it becomes Trip to Shanxi · Gaoping, the Xuanshi in the Spring and Autumn period, Changping in the Warring States period, Gaoping in the Northern Wei period; step by step walking among every brick and tile, suddenly I understood Lin Huiyin’s architectural love letter 📖 ▫️ Here is a three-day, two-night travel guide I put together after the trip, day 1️⃣………⬇️ 👗 Outfit: Since Shanxi has many ancient buildings big and small, and Gaoping is no exception, the overall style is new Chinese + wabi-sabi in solid colors! (Extra photos 📷) 🧾 Remember to wear sunscreen and bring water when traveling in summer (said it three times); flash photography is prohibited inside grottoes and ancient buildings. Respect cultural relics and travel responsibly! 🚄 Travel the afternoon before from Xi’an North to Gaoping East station (about 4h). Gaoping county town is small overall, so I chose to stay downtown, about 15 min to the hotel! ▫️ The trip officially begins 🔛 🗺️ (Yandi Mausoleum ➡️ Yangtoushan Grottoes ➡️ Kaihua Temple ➡️ Wolong Bay) ✨ 9:00–11:00 AM trace the origins of Shennong’s hometown, pay respects at Yandi Mausoleum, which is also the starting point of Chinese agricultural civilization ✔️ ✨ 1:00–1:20 PM Yandi Mausoleum ➡️ Yangtoushan Forest Park, about 20 minutes by car. The wind at Yangtoushan carries the warmth of the Northern Wei. There are 9 grottoes (my absolute favorites are grotto 3 and 5). Strolling through the forest park, watching the stone carvings age with time, every carved line is an ancient poem to the years. Sunlight filters through the leaves, falling on the mottled stone walls. The Buddha’s gentle eyes and brows make it feel as if a thousand years have slowed down at this moment. ✨ 3:30–4:00 PM Yangtoushan ➡️ Kaihua Temple, about 25 minutes by car, moving from forest to ancient hall. Kaihua Temple is a “museum” of Song dynasty murals. As someone with an art background, standing inside and slowly feeling the devotion and romance hidden in the colors is truly healing! Though centuries old, it remains as vivid as ever. ✨ 5:30–6:30 PM Kaihua Temple ➡️ Wolong Bay wellness town, about 25 minutes by car. We had amazing weather, like a comic scene! Had dinner in the town. 🔙 Hotel Didi! Today’s itinerary ends · One day in Gaoping, not long, but enough for you to understand the tenderness and depth of this land.
This was my second visit to Tiefo Temple, and this time I felt much better than before. This time, some time had passed since its peak popularity, and there weren't many people, so I could spend more time there and properly explore the place. The lighting was better in the morning, but when I arrived in the afternoon near closing time, the lighting inside the large store was noticeably dim.
山在穷游The temple is located on a very quiet mountainside, requiring a long climb up a flight of stairs 😴. The main hall containing the murals is inaccessible; you can get a general view from the entrance, and for more details, see the replicas in the side halls. It closes at 12 noon and may reopen at 2 pm, so please be aware of the time.
DanielwwhDinglin Temple is the largest of the many national key cultural relics protection units in Gaoping City, Jincheng, and can be considered the pinnacle of ancient architecture in Jincheng. The exact date of Dinglin Temple's initial construction is unknown, but according to a Jin Dynasty stone tablet still existing in the temple, it existed at least as early as the Later Tang Dynasty. Dinglin Temple underwent reconstruction during the Jin and Yuan Dynasties and several renovations during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Except for the Leiyin Hall, which is a Yuan Dynasty structure, most of the buildings are from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, making Dinglin Temple a complex of ancient buildings showcasing diverse styles from the Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing periods. The five-tiered eaves gate, lotus-shaped caisson ceiling, Leiyin Hall, Song Dynasty painted decorations, a nearly thousand-year-old pine tree on the west side of the gate, and centuries-old peonies, papaya trees, and small-leaved paulownia trees within the temple grounds are all must-see highlights. Dinglin Temple seems to lack a proper parking lot; when driving, you can only park wherever you can find space under the trees along the roadside.
117***30There is a parking lot with poles at the Yan Emperor's Mausoleum in Gaoping, Jincheng. Fortunately, parking lots in Shanxi usually charge by the time rather than by the hour. It's 2502. I didn't see any tickets for sale. There is also a Spring Festival temple fair, a flat road with many huge pillars, and then steps up to a huge hall. When I went there, I saw people coming back from burning incense and offering sacrifices.
M49***30Chongming Temple was called Langgu Temple during the Song and Liao dynasties. It is the earliest existing Northern Song Dynasty building in China. The Central Buddha Hall was built during the Kaibao period of the Northern Song Dynasty (968-975). Among the existing buildings, except for the Central Buddha Hall, which is an early Song Dynasty structure, the rest are Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings. The architectural style of the Central Buddha Hall follows the Tang Dynasty. The column capitals are not paved, the brackets are seven-layered, the rise and fall are gentle, the eaves are deep, and the proportions are a bit uncoordinated, but it exceeds the Ten Thousand Buddha Hall of Zhenguo Temple in Pingyao County during the Five Dynasties.
210***10September 18, 2026 Lianghu Ancient Village in Shanxi Province is a national historical and cultural village and a traditional Chinese village, founded in the Tang Dynasty and featuring Ming and Qing Dynasty architectural complexes. It is also a national AAAA-level scenic spot. The village preserves a large number of well-preserved Ming and Qing Dynasty courtyards and temples, earning it the reputation of "a living ancient village of the Taihang Mountains." Legend has it that the Guo and Tian families established the village here in the mid-Tang Dynasty, initially called "Lianghu." Later, with the migration of families with other surnames such as Wang, Li, Qin, and Zhao, the village expanded and was renamed "Lianghu." It was designated as one of the third batch of national historical and cultural villages in 2007, one of the first batch of traditional Chinese villages in 2012, and the Lianghu ancient architectural complex was designated a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit of Shanxi Province in 2016. Unique Layout: The village is laid out in the shape of a phoenix spreading its wings, with religious buildings such as Yuxu Temple and Jade Emperor Temple serving as high points. A network of streets and alleys paved with sand and gravel connects public spaces such as academies, theaters, and shops. Yuxu Temple: The most precious relic in the village, the Sanqing Hall was originally built in the Yuan Dynasty and retains a rare arched gate (flame gate). One of the central gates is an original Jin Dynasty artifact, and the platform is inscribed with the date "18th year of Dading". Panlong Village: A Qing Dynasty defensive fortress, covering an area of 3,800 square meters. Its five courtyards are equipped with arrow towers and a system of secret passages, forming a three-tiered defense system. It was praised by a Tsinghua University professor as a "Qingming Scroll depicting the lives of farmers and merchants". The Vice Minister's Residence: The private residence of Tian Fengji, a Qing Dynasty vice minister, and the core building of Panlong Village. It contains the East Residence, West Residence, and Tian Family Ancestral Hall. The brick-carved screen wall is decorated with auspicious patterns such as unicorns, phoenixes, and longevity mountains. This architectural complex, facing south, served both residential and defensive functions and is hailed as a representative work of "living ancient villages in the Taihang Mountains." Tian Fengji's birthplace: Lianghu Village, Gaoping County, Zezhou Prefecture, Shanxi Province (now part of Jincheng City). Birth and death: Born in the second year of the Chongzhen reign of the Ming Dynasty (1629), died in the thirty-eighth year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1699), at the age of seventy-one. His courtesy name was Ningzhi (also written as Ningzhi), and his pen name was Peicang. In the imperial examinations: He passed the second-class Jinshi examination in the twelfth year of the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1655) and was selected as a Shujishi in the Hanlin Academy. His official positions: He successively served as a compiler in the Hanlin Academy, a lecturer to the Shunzhi Emperor, a lecturer to the emperor, the Right Vice Minister of the Ministry of Revenue, a lecturer to the Kangxi Emperor, and the Left Vice Minister of the Ministry of Revenue. Fengjiang: In the eleventh year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign (1672), he was transferred to the position of Governor of Zhejiang Province, concurrently serving as Vice Minister of War. He was an important regional official at the time and a teacher of the Kangxi Emperor. In the tenth year of Kangxi's reign (1671), he was appointed as a lecturer at the Imperial Academy, primarily responsible for lecturing to the Kangxi Emperor. A second-rank official in the early Qing Dynasty, he served as Governor of Zhejiang Province and Vice Minister of War. In his later years, he resigned and returned to his hometown to reside here. The Tian family is one of the main surnames in Lianghu Village. Many members of the family passed the imperial examinations during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and the Vice Minister's residence witnessed the family's heyday.
寶寶CindyYangtou Mountain Grottoes are located on Yangtou Mountain in the north of Gaoping City. Yangtou Mountain is the main peak of Shouyang Mountain, a branch of Taihang Mountain, with an altitude of 1,297 meters. It is named after its high and steep mountain shape that resembles a sheep's head. Some stone statues and stone pagodas are distributed on the mountainside, while others stand on the mountaintop. Some are caves, while others are like niches. According to Mr. Zhang Qingjie's "Survey Report on Yangtou Mountain Grottoes in Gaoping, Shanxi", the grottoes can be divided into 10 areas, including 22 larger cave niches, more than 80 small niches, and a stele of Thousand Buddhas.
境无界The site of the Battle of Changping is now a key cultural relic protection unit in Shanxi Province. The site covers a wide area, starting from Skull Mountain and Ma'anhe in the west, and ending at Hongjiagou and Xingcun in the east, with a width of about 10 kilometers; starting from Danzhuling in the north and ending at Mishan Town in the south, it is about 30 kilometers long. The river valleys between the east and west mountains and on both sides of the Dan River are all key protection areas. Although it has a history of more than 2,200 years, many beautiful stories and legends are still widely circulated. The origins of many place names and village names are related to this war, such as Kangying, Gukou, Weicheng, Arrowhead, Qijiayuan, Sanjia, Zhaozhuang, and Paiwang. Many sites and relics such as the Hundred Miles Great Wall (also known as Qinlei), Yingfangling, Kongcangling, Baiqitai, Skull Mountain, Jiangjunling, and Lianpotun still exist. The Great Wall built by the Qin army to cut off the food supply and reinforcements of the Zhao army started from Danzhuling in the west, passed Guanheling, Yangtoushan, and ended at Ma'anshan in Lingchuan, winding for more than 100 miles, and the site can still be seen today. Weicheng Village is said to be the place where the Zhao army was besieged by the Qin army, and Zhao Kuo died here. Zhaozhuang Village, according to legend, became a ruin after the Battle of Changping. After Zhao Kuo died, the local people stole Zhao Kuo's body back and buried it on Erxianling in the north of the village. In order to make the descendants not forget Zhao State, the place was renamed Zhaozhuang. The idiom "talking about war on paper" refers to Zhao Kuo's dogmatism in using troops. Gukou Village, according to legend, is the place where Bai Qi killed the Zhao army. Therefore, Gukou Village is also known as Shagu, Kutou, and Shengyuangu. It is located 5 kilometers west of Gaoping City. There are Baiqi Terrace, Skull Mountain, Skull King Temple and other historical sites in the village.
旅游可放松心情The interior of the scenic spot is very quiet and you can take photos at will. People who like ancient buildings will be very interested. A trip like this, away from the hustle and bustle of the city and back to nature, can cleanse the increasingly impetuous mind.
Devil May SmileOverall, Jincheng City left a very good impression on us. The free food and drinks in this small town were very heartwarming, and there were various breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. This was the best tourist attraction I've ever visited. The iron flower performance was amazing, and the shows were all great value for money. I also had my picture taken as a souvenir. The photographer was very professional, and I love all the photos he took.
王嘉The standard currency in Gaoping is CNY
Current exchange rate approx.: EUR ≈7.5CNY (actual exchange rates depend on the bank). Currency exchange tips:
1. Exchange currency at your local bank before departure, as rates are usually better than at the destination.
2. You can also withdraw cash from local ATMs.
3. Avoid exchanging currency at airports or hotels, as they offer the worst rates.
