Guest User: This hotel is in a great location for The Piece Hall and centre of Halifax. Parking only £3 for 24 hours in the car park next to the hotel. It is in need of some significant refurbishment and upgrading but was good value considering the room rate. The staff were friendly and a basic breakfast is included in the price. It's good for anyone looking for a basic room on a budget when visiting Halifax but don't expect Travelodge or Premier Inn standards for the price.

One Courtyard, 315 Rooms & a nearly £20m Comeback: Discovering the Piece Hall in Halifax 🏛️💫
Our trip to Halifax started with a concert in Victoria Theatre and ended with a stroll through 18th-century history—all within walking distance of a railway station. 🧵 The Piece Hall Built in 1779, it's the only surviving intact Georgian cloth hall in the UK. A massive open-air courtyard ringed by 315 rooms across three levels, once used by merchants trading "pieces" of woollen cloth. After the textile trade moved on, the building fell into decline and even faced demolition in the 1970s. A £19 million restoration brought it back to life in 2017, and now it's one of Yorkshire's best outdoor music venues. 📚 A Library Built Around a Church Spire Right next to the Piece Hall sits the Central Library and Archives. A local told us about its clever integration with the old Square Church spire, and it's such a shame we missed it: the library doesn't open until 10am, and we'd moved on before then. Here's the story: the Victorian Gothic church burned down in 1971, leaving only the tower and spire. Instead of knocking it down, architects built the library around it. The spire now rises straight out of the library roof, and the old rose window is set into the children's library wall. Definitely one for next time. 🌈 Those Gates The colourful gates on the east side of are an absolute showstopper. Bold, vibrant and perfectly framed against the Georgian stonework. Backed by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra under Rob Shirakbari's direction the sound was lush, authentic and deeply moving. 🏛️ A Historic Venue The Victoria Theatre in Halifax was opened in 1901 as the Victoria Hall, named after Queen Victoria (who died just before it was completed). It has been a cultural cornerstone of the town for 125 years: historic, intimate and full of character, a fitting setting for music this timeless. 💭 A Personal Note More than a decade ago, we saw Burt Bacharach live at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Burt left us in 2023, but his songs remain and so does their intention: to say something true, to offer beauty and comfort, to remind us what the world needs now. This night delivered all of that — and more. 🎻
Cross country train travel, from Zhangjiagang to Changsha. But is England's transport better? 🙃
First and foremost, my opinions are influenced by my own personal travel experiences in the UK, so all the opinions are relative to my home country and are my own original thoughts! Many people think of China as being a densely populated country, filled with immense skyscrapers creating the illusion of living somewhere in the future somehow. And while this rings true for some places (Chongqing, Shanghai, Shenzhen etc), a great majority of tourists never see the vast, verdant, rural areas which make China one of the most beautifully diverse countries on the planet. One way to see this luscious Chinese oasis is to travel cross country by high-speed rail. The infrastructure of China is something to behold. Convenient, clean, punctual, stress-free, affordable- Chinese trains are everything that British trains are not. If you buy a ticket in China, you can cancel it for free up until your just before your departure time. You can change the ticket twice too, without charge, if you need to change plans. You order the ticket using your passport number, so you queue up when your gate is called and scan in with your passport. From your gate being called to getting on the train takes a maximum of 15 minutes. British trains offer online tickets, but from my experience, refunds are difficult and laborious. If you get on the wrong train or the wrong time you receive a big fine. If you miss your train, you didn't used to be able to claim it back (I'm not sure you can now either). Our train was due to leave Zhangjiagang station at 0746, and it left the station at 0746. This is not to naively say that all Chinese trains are on time every time, but late delays are a rarity. Once our train was delayed by five minutes, but the hundreds of our other journeys have been on time. To compare this to England, I can't remember the last time I caught a train that hadn't been delayed or cancelled or modified. A simple trip, from Halifax to Leeds, is consistently late for one reason or another. Both train systems are consistent, just in opposing ways! The journey from Zhangjiagang in Jiangsu to Changsha in Hunan is a collosal 723 miles (1165 kilometres). To put this into context, it's a similar distance from Land's End to John O'Groats is by car. It takes 5 hours and 47 minutes by bullet train, and cost us (two adults and two children) ¥1218/£135 in total. The UK drive would take a whopping 17 hours, in good traffic! For contrast, a train journey in the UK would take at least 22 hours, a coach 24-35 hours, plane 6-10 hours, or you could walk it in about 70 days! Walking would be the cheapest option, obviously, but pitching fees, hotel fees, food costs need to be factored in too, making it a very expensive excursion 🤣 You'd spend £150-300 on petrol, at least. UK trains are not budget friendly, costing between £100-300 per person! And, while some cheap deals exist, bus and coach travel costs way more than the China train and takes so much longer. Some trains in England are outdated, dusty and wear a pungent odour usually reserved for damp, dark underpasses in inner city areas. My memories of crowded trains with no spare seats, sitting outside the perpetually opening toilet door in stuffy uncomfortable conditions travelling from north to south in my army days, still sit unfavorably in my mind. The Chinese trains I've travelled on have been clean, free from graffiti and vandalism and are all-round pleasant places to spend hours travelling. On this train now, I have just ordered a takeaway from a station restaurant to my seat in my train carriage and a coffee from the train shop. All of the things I bought came to less than ¥120/£13, including delivery fee TO THE TRAIN! The best you can hope for in Britain for that price is a tasteless sandwich, a pack of McCoy's salt and vinegar, a snickers bar and a weak coffee heated to 258°c. But, to be honest, I'm not sure you'd even get that much for £13! The UK is a place that takes captive audience money milking extremely seriously, and the paper cups of coffee you could get for a pound in the town centre, suddenly quadruples in value on a train. Cynicism aside, this is unfortunately a true reflection of Britain and it's ever inflating (like a rich man's waistline) costs. China, on the other hand, is all for making necessities affordable for it's people and visitors to the country. My final thoughts are about the intensely beautiful scenery you encounter on a standard journey in China. You may start the journey in a built up city, fly through a rural and agricultural area, traverse mountainsides, whizz through forests of lush greenery and speed over the Yangtze river all in one journey. Don't be fooled into thinking all of China is imposing structures and tinned sardine-like crowding issues. The countryside is so picturesque, so diverse, so unexpected that the train journey is a trip in itself! Britain has some stunning views too. Coastal routes with cliff top views, mountainous terrain in Scotland and Wales and some unique architectural big city designs to keep you satisfied on a journey. Calderdale and all of Yorkshire have some truly amazing scenery which provide a feast for your eyes. Unfortunately, you also have sweary chavs talking a bit too loudly (although Chinese travellers aren't exactly quiet!!), many run down urban areas, scratched windows, constant delays, the threat of stones being thrown at the windows, drunk scallywags, dirty seats, cramped trains, benign conversation, outdated carriages, open drug use, high ticket prices, slow journeys, overpriced essentials and an altogether more stressful journey. I'm British and this post isn't to diss Britain (much), it is simply to highlight the differences between the countries and to show how it could and should be done in England, if the government actually cared for it's people! So next time you visit China, try a long distance train to another city other than Shanghai and Beijing. Absorb the absolute scenes of the countryside, enjoy the experience of travel tailored towards the consumer and open your eyes to a whole new world. Halifax, England: the lingering warmth of time hidden in a Yorkshire valley
Living in England, there’s no rush like a traveler’s tight schedule, so I have plenty of relaxed time to explore destinations beyond the usual must-see tourist spots in the UK. Often, it’s only out of boredom that I seek out lesser-known places. That’s how Halifax in West Yorkshire came into view. After lunch, the gloomy sky cleared to reveal blue, so I checked the route and found that Halifax was just over a 30-minute drive from where I was staying. I told a friend, and we immediately set off by car. Driving through the hills and green fields of West Yorkshire, I finally arrived in Halifax, a quiet historic town nestled in a valley. It lacks London’s noise and crowds and the commercial hustle of popular towns. This old industrial town, shaped by its wool and textile heritage, welcomed me with the gentlest and most profound embrace. Entering the town center, what struck me most were the warm sandstone buildings. The town is built along the valley, with uneven terrain and layers of old buildings spreading across the hillsides, carrying the unique calmness of northern England. On both sides of the streets stand Victorian factories and vintage alleys that have lasted for centuries. The rustic stone walls are etched with the marks of time, and the once-thriving textile industry’s traces quietly scatter through the streets, understated yet impressive. Strolling through the town center, The Piece Hall is an irreplaceable delight. This rare circular Georgian stone square in Europe was once the busiest cloth trading center in England. Symmetrical stone arcades surround the square, and the warm-toned sandstone walls glow softly in the daylight, with clean and elegant geometric lines. Standing in the center of the square feels like stepping back to the industrial heyday, when merchants gathered and cloth flowed through the market. Nearby, Blackledge Street feels even more secluded and peaceful. Old textile factories, vintage cast-iron window frames, and weathered stone walls hold the purest industrial vintage charm. With few people around, the only sound is the wind brushing through the alleys, making it perfect for a slow walk and quiet photography. Not far away, Halifax’s town hall stands solemn and dignified. The Gothic clock tower rises tall and grand, with exquisite stone carvings showcasing the craftsmanship of a century-old building. Looking up, the spire of an ancient church pierces the valley sky. The weathered stone walls and ornate window frames hold centuries of stories, and the rich cultural heritage is palpable. From a high vantage point, the whole town lies nestled between the Calderdale valleys, surrounded by rolling hills and green fields. The scattered stone houses spread along the slopes. Nearby are the bustling old town streets, and beyond them, vast and tranquil countryside hills. The rugged industrial relics and the valley’s natural softness blend perfectly here. I favor the relaxed and peaceful atmosphere here. There are no endless streams of tourists, only slowed-down time and accumulated years. From a prosperous textile trading hub to today’s gentle and healing valley town, Halifax has shed its former clamor and preserved its unique lingering warmth. This hidden Yorkshire town isn’t flashy or extravagant, but its quiet charm grows richer the more you experience it. The old buildings tell stories of the past, the valley breeze is soft and lasting, and every street, every stone holds the unique poetry and depth of a northern English town. It brings peace to the heart and invites you to slowly explore its hidden years and memories.
