The shrine’s goshuin book even has an exclusive, super cute design. 🌊【Must-Visit Beach Stations】 1️⃣ JR Shioya Station (Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture) Known as the "station closest to the sea," you can see Awaji Island right from the platform! Best to visit at sunset. There’s a seaside café inside the station that’s super romantic. 2️⃣ Old Noto Railway Iida Station Ruins (Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture) The abandoned tracks stretch straight into the Sea of Japan, accompanied by the soothing sound of shell wind chimes—super healing. 🚞【Railway Enthusiast’s Paradise】 1️⃣ Railway Museum (Saitama City) Limited edition train models plus real trains on display. Even my girlfriend said it was more fun than she expected! The second-floor railway bento exhibition will make your mouth water... 2️⃣ JR Kushimoto Station (Kushimoto Town, Wakayama Prefecture) Blue sea and sky with a red station sign. In front of the station is a popular local whale-shaped monument. ⛩️🌿 Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine — A Mystical Shrine Hidden in the Forest 🇯🇵✨

📍 Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine, Takamori, Aso, Kumamoto, Japan Hidden deep inside the lush forests of Minami-Aso, Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine feels like stepping into another world. 🌿⛩️ The approach to the shrine is what makes this place so special. A long stone staircase winds through tall cedar trees, with nearly 100 moss-covered stone lanterns lining the path. As you walk deeper into the forest, the atmosphere becomes quieter and more mysterious, creating an almost cinematic feeling. At the top, you’ll find the peaceful shrine surrounded by greenery. The shrine enshrines Izanagi-no-Mikoto, Izanami-no-Mikoto and Ishikimi Daishogun, and is also known for its connection with wishes for happiness and marriage. But the adventure doesn’t end at the shrine. Behind the main hall, a path leads further uphill to Ugetoiwa, a huge sacred rock with a natural opening more than 10 metres across. Local legend says the opening was created when Kihachi broke through the rock while escaping. The unusual formation has become a symbol associated with overcoming difficult obstacles and achieving goals. 📸 Photography Tip: The most atmospheric shots are along the staircase, where the stone lanterns, moss-covered steps and tall cedar trees create a natural frame around the torii gates. Morning light filtering through the trees can make the scene especially beautiful. The shrine is also a fascinating stop for anime and manga fans, as it became known as a setting associated with Hotarubi no Mori e (Into the Forest of Fireflies). ✨ Travel Tip: Wear comfortable shoes. The approach involves a long flight of stone steps, and the path beyond the shrine toward Ugetoiwa can be unpaved and slippery, especially after rain. For a Kyushu road trip, this is an amazing place to combine with Aso, Takachiho Gorge and the surrounding Minami-Aso area. It is quiet, atmospheric and completely different from the major tourist attractions in central Japan. #bucketlistdestinations Mitsukejima, a 28-meter rock island off the Noto Peninsula, is a mossy sentinel in the Sea of Japan. I took the JR Hokuriku Line to Kanazawa Station (¥3,000 from Tokyo), then the 2-hour bus to Mitsukejima (¥1,500, IC cards accepted). The Mitsukejima Coastal Trail is a 2-km loop along the rocky shore, where moss grows on the basalt columns. The trail is free, but the bus costs ¥1,500 each way. I hiked in May, when the moss was emerald from spring rains. The rocks are slippery—I wore trail runners and slipped once; hiking boots with good grip are essential. Mistake: I didn’t bring a windbreaker—big mistake. The Sea of Japan wind is cold, even in May. Bring ¥2,000 cash for the bus and a kaki(oyster) lunch at a local seafood stall (cash only). Kindness beat: A local fisherman gave me a fresh kakistraight from his boat, saying “umi no megumi, moss ga mamoru” (the sea’s bounty, the moss protects). Is a rocky shore more beautiful because of the moss, or does the moss make the sea’s edge a place of quiet resilience?
