Kumano Kodo Seiganto-ji Temple | Stepping into the ethereal Zen realm of Fudaraku — traveler post in Tanabe

Kumano Kodo Seiganto-ji Temple | Stepping into the ethereal Zen realm of Fudaraku

Tired of crowded tourist hotspots? You must visit Seiganto-ji Temple on the Kumano Kodo trail. This is a thousand-year-old Fudaraku pure land hidden in the mountains, a World Heritage secret spot. It holds the pinnacle of Japanese Zen aesthetics—quiet, healing, and perfect for washing away the restlessness of city life! Unlike commercialized temples, Seiganto-ji boasts a triple landscape of mountains, waterfalls, and ancient temples. It is a rare thousand-year-old site in Japan where Shinto and Buddhism coexist. As a sacred site for the Fudaraku Kannon for centuries, it remains serene and ethereal, with a long history of worship. Hike the ancient trail, sit quietly in the temple, and immerse yourself in the gentle Zen atmosphere that has spanned a millennium. 🌿 4 core highlights ✅ Iconic landmark | The three-story pagoda and waterfall in one frame The vermilion three-story pagoda is the temple's signature view. Its bright red eaves are set against lush green mountains, echoing the 133-meter Nachi Falls behind it. The interplay of red, green, and white creates a serene yet magnificent scene. It is also said to be an inspiration for the bathhouse in "Spirited Away." Every photo you take here looks like a masterpiece. ✅ Ancient architecture | A legacy from the Momoyama period The main hall was rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and retains its complete Momoyama-period architectural style, with simple, solemn wooden structures and exquisite details. As the first temple on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, it has a profound history, with every beam and pillar steeped in a thousand years of religious and cultural heritage. ✅ Coexistence of Shinto and Buddhism | A unique Zen sanctuary This is a rare complex where Shinto and Buddhism coexist. Located right next to Kumano Nachi Taisha, it perfectly blends Shinto and Buddhist cultures. There are no noisy crowds—only the mountain breeze and the temple bells. Sit in solitude and immerse yourself in the ethereal Zen atmosphere that heals the mind and body. ✅ Healing light hike | A forest stroll on the ancient trail Connected to the thousand-year-old Kumano Kodo cobblestone path, it is surrounded by dense cedar forests and lush greenery. Enjoy an easy, short hike filled with negative ions. With ancient trees and streams along the way, the pace is relaxed and effortless, making it easy for beginners and casual travelers to explore this sacred site. 💡 Essential travel tips 📍 Address: Nachisan, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan (core section of the Kumano Kodo trail) ⏰ Opening hours: 7:00 AM–4:30 PM 🎫 A separate ticket is required to visit the three-story pagoda, which is great value ✨ Best way to visit: Arrive early in the morning for fewer crowds, tranquility, and the perfect atmosphere ⚠️ Recommended: Combine your visit with Nachi Falls and Kumano Nachi Taisha for a more complete itinerary Walk the thousand-year-old trail, visit the ancient temple, and meet the gentle mountains in the Zen realm of Fudaraku 🌿 💬 Question: Are you drawn to the stunning view of the pagoda and waterfall together, or do you prefer the quiet Zen atmosphere of the temple? Let us know in the comments! NachiFalls KumanoNachiTaisha

5-Day Kansai Hidden Gem Itinerary | Experience Ancient Temples, Historic Trails, and Seaside Hot Springs in One Trip — traveler post in Tanabe

5-Day Kansai Hidden Gem Itinerary | Experience Ancient Temples, Historic Trails, and Seaside Hot Springs in One Trip

Hi, this is Travel Diary 🎏, just back from Japan. For a first trip to Kansai, many people spend all 5 days in Osaka and Kyoto. But if you also love ancient temples, historic trails, and natural scenery, you can do what I did: 1 day for the classic Kyoto route, 1 day for the Osaka city route, then head to the Kumano Kodo for a hike along the stone-paved trail, and finish with a night at a seaside hot spring hotel. Ancient temples, cities, forests, and coastlines—all in one trip. Save this 5-day, 4-night Kansai itinerary! · 🟢DAY 1: Shanghai – Osaka 🟢DAY 2: Classic 1-Day Kyoto Tour 🗺 Fushimi Inari Taisha ➠ Kinkaku-ji ➠ Kiyomizu-dera ➠ Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka ⭐️ Capture Kyoto's 3 most iconic sights: the Senbon Torii gates, the Golden Pavilion, and the Kiyomizu Stage 📍 Fushimi Inari Taisha: Try to arrive early, as it gets very crowded during the day. The further you hike up the mountain, the fewer people there are, and the layers of torii gates against the forest look even better. 📍 Kinkaku-ji: Focus on the golden pavilion by the pond and its reflection. 📍 Kiyomizu-dera/Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka: The Kiyomizu Stage, the temple gate, and the Kyoto rooftops are all worth seeing. 🟢DAY 3: Osaka City Life 🗺 Shitenno-ji ➠ Osaka Castle Park ➠ Kani Doraku ➠ Shinsaibashi & Dotonbori 📍 Shitenno-ji: See the five-story pagoda and the temple grounds. 📍 Osaka Castle Park: Photograph the exterior of the castle tower; you can decide whether to go inside based on your schedule. 📍 Shinsaibashi & Dotonbori: Great for shopping, seeing the neon signs, and eating Osaka street food. 🟢DAY 4: Kumano Kodo + Seaside Hot Spring 🗺 Depart Osaka ➠ Kumano Kodo (Daimon-zaka) ➠ Shirahama Hot Spring Hotel 📍 Kumano Kodo: The Daimon-zaka section is about 3 km long and features forests and stone steps. It requires a certain level of fitness, and be sure to take precautions against heat and slipping. 📍 Seaside hot spring hotel in Shirahama, Wakayama: After the hike, check into a hot spring hotel to have dinner and soak in the hot springs. 🟢DAY 5: Wakayama – Kansai Airport – Shanghai 📝 Practical tips: 🚗: If you aren't hiring a private car for intercity travel, transit time will be quite long, so plan accordingly. 🌲: The Kumano Kodo is not an easy sightseeing spot. It has many stone steps and can be slippery after rain. Those with low stamina or limited mobility should choose carefully. 🎠: If traveling with children, you can swap the Kumano Kodo for Universal Studios Japan and the aquarium, or go see the Tama train 🐱. 📷: Sony A7M4 + 24-105 mm

Taking a 65+ Mom on Her First Kumano Kodo Hike|Effort-Saving Route + Babysitter-Level Guide — traveler post in Tanabe

Taking a 65+ Mom on Her First Kumano Kodo Hike|Effort-Saving Route + Babysitter-Level Guide

Who says hiking is only for the young? This time, I took a 60+ hiking newbie 👵🏻 who surprisingly completed the classic Kumano Kodo route with ease. The whole journey took 3-4 hours at a leisurely pace, absorbing the spiritual energy of nature along this World Cultural Heritage pilgrimage path, making it a unique experience healed by nature and history. 🗺️ Effort-saving route recommendation ❗️Reverse direction❗️ From "Yunomae Station" in front of Nachi Station → Three-Story Pagoda → Seiganto-ji Temple → Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine → Meoto Sugi (Married Couple Cedars) → Daimonzaka Station 👉 Only a short uphill at the start, the rest is a gentle downhill! Knee-friendly, steady breathing, completely overturning the idea of "mountain climbing." ⏰ Recommended golden time Take the first bus early from Kii-Katsuura Station towards "Mount Nachi" (about 30 minutes) ✔️ Arrive between 7-8 AM: morning mist lingers, moss glows, no one blocks your shot ✔️ No sun! Not hot! There's a breeze in the forest, my mom even needed a light jacket 🚶‍♀️ Actual time reference Good stamina, fewer photos: about 2 hours With elders + stopping to take photos (like us): 3 hours is enough, including breaks, snacks, and waterfall viewing 📸 Must-see spots · Three-Story Pagoda + Nachi Waterfall in one frame (classic photo spot) · Stone path in front of Seiganto-ji Temple (feels like stepping into a Studio Ghibli animation) · Daimonzaka Old Trail (an ethereal ancient forest path) 💡 Elder-friendly tips · Few gravel/stone steps throughout, slightly slippery after rain, hiking poles recommended · Daimonzaka Station has a bus back to Kii-Katsuura, last bus around 5 PM · Few vending machines on the route, bring your own water and lunch ✨ Unexpected surprise After the hike, I sent a postcard at the main street post office and won a lottery prize—a Japanese mailbox piggy bank! For someone who never wins, that was very lucky ♥️ Mission accomplished: hiking the World Heritage route with mom ✅ Seeing her happily say "This trip was worth it" after finishing the whole route made everything just perfect.

Amanemu: A Hidden Sanctuary Where Lush Forests Meet Healing Seascapes — traveler post in Tanabe

Amanemu: A Hidden Sanctuary Where Lush Forests Meet Healing Seascapes

Nestled within the folds of Ise-Shima National Park, Amanemu is like a pearl gently embraced by mountains and sea. It abandons the hustle and bustle of the city, using the tide sounds of Ago Bay as its overture and the pine winds along ancient paths as harmony, blending the Zen spirit of Japanese wabi-sabi with Aman’s philosophy of tranquility to create an ultimate romantic retreat of “seclusion.” 🏞️ Stunning Scenery: A Living Scroll of Mountains and Sea The hotel is located at the tip of the Osaki Peninsula, facing Ago Bay, known as the “Aegean Sea of Japan.” The coastline is winding, dotted with over 60 pearl cultivation rafts. At sunrise and sunset, the glow dyes the sea golden red, and the silhouettes of pearl-harvesting boats in the distance form a moving ukiyo-e painting. Behind it, Ise-Shima National Park offers a lush forest oxygen bar, with cherry blossoms and maple leaves decorating the window frame in seasonal rotation. 🎨 Unique Design: Architecture Growing from the Land Aman’s exclusive designer Kerry Hill reinterpreted the Japanese “minka” houses with a modern touch. The dark gray tiled roofs slope gently with the mountain, and the brown-black Japanese cedar walls are wrapped in vines, as if the buildings naturally grew from the earth. Inside, light wood, basalt floor tiles, and woven fabrics are used extensively. Huge floor-to-ceiling windows and wooden louvered sliding doors bring in natural light and scenery without reservation, achieving a minimalist aesthetic where “architecture disappears into nature.” 🛏️ Rooms and Private Baths: Ultimate Privacy in Every Accommodation The hotel has only 24 suites and 4 villas, each equipped with a private onsen. Suites start at 99㎡, combining bedroom and living area, with sliding doors opening to spacious terraces. The ultimate experience lies in the open-air or semi-open private baths, fed by the famous “Pearl Onsen,” rich in minerals. Whether soaking under the starry sky or watching the morning sea mist, this undisturbed, anytime bathing ritual is Amanemu’s core luxury. 🍽️ Dining Experience: Seasonal Gifts from the Imperial Granary The restaurant boasts dual views of the bay and forest, focusing on the “Omakase” concept. Thanks to Mie Prefecture’s heritage as an ancient imperial granary, ingredients are meticulously selected: the sweetness of Ise lobster, the marbling of Matsusaka wagyu, freshly harvested abalone and sea urchin. On the basalt-built sunken terrace, accompanied by the soft glow of a glass fireplace, savor a signature cocktail named “Ama,” indulging both palate and sight. 💆 Leisure and Wellness: Deep Healing for Body, Mind, and Spirit · Spa: Covering 2,000㎡, built around a large natural hot spring, featuring a spa float pool and private onsen pavilions, offering Kampo therapies based on local mugwort and camellia. · Outdoor Activities: A 33-meter freshwater infinity pool suspended among the trees, facing the bay; book guided hikes on the World Heritage Kumano Kodo trail or visit Ama huts to hear ancient legends of freediving without oxygen tanks. · Golf: The 18-hole Nemu Golf Club nestled between mountains and sea offers breathtaking views with every swing. As night falls, stone lanterns softly light the courtyard. Soaking in the warm spring water, listening to the rustling pines, and gazing at the starry sky, time stretches long enough for the soul to gently resonate with this ancient land, imprinting this serene joy deeply in memory.

Kumano Kodo Private Car Tour: 7 Must-Visit Highlights — traveler post in Tanabe

Kumano Kodo Private Car Tour: 7 Must-Visit Highlights

Tested the essence of the Kumano Kodo trail! This route is definitely worth rushing for~ Itinerary: Hayatama Taisha → Kamikura Shrine → Daimonzaka → Nachi Taisha → Seiganto-ji Temple → Hiryu Taisha → Nachi Waterfall → Kii-Katsuura → Kumano Hongu Taisha After researching the bus options for a long time, I decisively chose a private car, so I had full control over the time! Hiked 4 km from Daimonzaka to Nachi Waterfall, surrounded by towering trees that are super healing. I recommend at least 1.5 hours to stroll slowly. Had lunch at Kii-Katsuura Seafood Market. The taste was good but a bit pricey; one set meal wasn’t enough 😂 After eating, went to the pier for a foot bath! The lonely torii gate in the sea (Shirohebi Benzaiten Shrine) is a must-visit. You can even go into the sea and see many sea cucumbers (PS: after taking photos, they were returned to their original place, with a release video). Finally rushed to Kumano Hongu Taisha. The large torii gate is quite impressive! On the way from the old site to the new site, there’s a small supermarket where the Wagyu beef is excellent value. Bought some to add to the meal at the guesthouse—another satisfying day~ The overall route is smooth without detours, satisfying both natural scenery and cultural heritage. For the lazy ones, just lock in the private car option!

Kumano Kodo One-Day Dash: The Red Leaves Are at Their Best — traveler post in Tanabe

Kumano Kodo One-Day Dash: The Red Leaves Are at Their Best

On the first day, I hiked 21km on the Kumano Kodo and was so exhausted I doubted my life choices 😭 I walked from Takijiri-oji to Tsugizakura-oji, climbed 1200 meters, and it took a full 8 hours! I didn’t encounter any bears along the way, and I kept running into other hikers, so it felt okay. The maple leaves are almost fully red! The ginkgo trees are starting to turn yellow too. Next week will be the perfect time to see them, and every snapshot captures that autumn vibe 🍁 But aside from the red leaves, about 90% of the route is pine trees, so the scenery is a bit monotonous. Suggestions for those eager to go: ✅ Next week is just right for maple viewing ✅ Traveling with companions makes it easier and safer

Kii Peninsula Travelogue: A Half-Day Trek from Daimonzaka to Nachi Waterfall on the Kumano Kodo — traveler post in Tanabe

Kii Peninsula Travelogue: A Half-Day Trek from Daimonzaka to Nachi Waterfall on the Kumano Kodo

During my recent trip to Kansai, besides checking out exhibitions in the city, I set aside two days specifically to explore the Kumano Kodo in Wakayama. I’ve always been fascinated by the seamless blend of historic architecture and nature. For this trip, I opted for the most iconic and beginner-friendly section: the trail from Daimonzaka to Nachi Waterfall. Here’s a breakdown of my timeline and route for the day: · *Transportation & Preparation** I started my morning at Kii-Katsuura Station. The coin lockers outside the station cost 500 yen, so I dropped off my large luggage there first—just make sure to pick it up before 5:00 PM. From the station, I hopped on the No. 31 Kumano Bus. The buses don't run very frequently (only about once an hour), so I highly recommend grabbing a printed timetable from the visitor center before you set off. I took the bus to the "Daimonzaka" stop, where the hike begins. · *The Hiking Route (Approx. 2.5 hours total)** 1. **Daimonzaka Entrance**: The trail kicks off at the "Meoto Sugi" (Couple Cedars), two towering 800-year-old trees whose canopies completely shade the path. Ascending the moss-covered stone steps feels like stepping back in time; these stairs have been preserved since the Heian period (8th century). The texture of the stones and the dappled sunlight filtering through the forest create a magical atmosphere. 2. **Kumano Nachi Taisha (Grand Shrine)**: The vibrant vermilion buildings of the shrine stand out beautifully against the lush, deep mountain greenery. It is dedicated to the deity of the waterfall. In the courtyard, there’s an 850-year-old giant camphor tree with a hollowed trunk that you can walk through to pray for good fortune. 3. **Seigantoji Temple**: Located right next to Nachi Taisha, this is the very first temple on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage route. This spot offers the most iconic photo op: the brilliant red three-story pagoda perfectly framed with Nachi Waterfall plunging into the deep valley behind it. The balance between human-made structures and the natural landscape is simply flawless. 4. **Nachi Waterfall**: Plunging 133 meters, this is the tallest single-tiered waterfall in Japan. As you get closer, the roaring sound of the water is incredible. Nearby, you can drink from the "Enmei-sui," a sacred spring water said to grant a long life. · *Practical Tips & Takeaways** · The temperature can fluctuate quite a bit in the mountains, so bringing a light windbreaker is a good idea. · Even though it’s a beginner-friendly trail, the mossy stone steps can get a bit slick. Shoes with solid grip are a must. · If you're a fan of collecting goshuin (shrine and temple stamps), don't forget your goshuin-cho (stamp book)! Getting the complete set of stamps from the Kumano Sanzan (the three grand shrines of Kumano) is highly recommended; the calligraphy and designs are stunning. Overall, the pacing of this trip was super relaxing, and the surroundings were incredibly peaceful. I'd definitely love to come back and tackle some of the longer hiking trails next time.

Wakayama Adventure World

We had so much fun as a family at Adventure World Shirahama. There were a lot of animals that we learnt about. I enjoyed the safari ride in particular because we couls get up close with animals while being driven around. The dolphin show was also very impressive with smart tricks performed by a variety of aquatic animals. The theme park also has a wode variety of activities and rides for children so they can be well entertained. We had such a great family day out together and I would strongly recommend that you check out the Adventure World if you happen to visit Shirahama area.

Sandanbeki Cliffs

You must go to the cave. The elevator goes down 36 meters, close to sea level, and the waves are rolling. 1500 yen is very worthwhile! The rocks are from the mines, and the colors are bright, which is the first time I have seen it in my life.

Engetsu Island

It is said that in winter or summer, you have a chance to see the sun set at the gap of Engetsujima. I made a temporary strategy and did not study the camera position or time. I searched on Google and came here to check in. It is not far from Shirarahama Beach, so I just went along to play. It was almost sunset when we arrived there. While waiting for the sunset, we can also soak in the foot bath next to it. We saw a few people on a dam and thought they were waiting for the sunset with us. We walked into the area and found that they were fishing. As the sun set, the light became more and more beautiful. At the same time, I also found that I was standing in the wrong position. Obviously, I couldn’t take pictures of the sun passing through the hole in this position, and I didn’t have time to adjust. Although I didn’t see the fantasy, the scenery was still good. Friends who encounter good weather, promise me to check the best camera position, don’t be like me, and navigate here stupidly.

Kumano Hongu Taisha

Kumano Hongu Taisha belongs to Yoshino-Kumano National Park in the southeast of Wakayama Prefecture. Together with Kumano Hayatama Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha, it is the head shrine of more than 3,000 Kumano shrines across the country. The shrine, which has crows as its servants, was originally built on Nakasu Osaigahara, where the Kumano River, Otonashi River, and Iwata River meet. It was washed away by a flood at the end of the 19th century and was rebuilt in its current location. The main gate, the shrine, and the shrine for worshipping the gods make people feel calm and peaceful in the ancient and vastness, as if explaining to people why people believe in Kumano Hongu Taisha so much. Since the 14th century, the habit of worshipping Kumano has been formed in the lives of local people. At that time, there was a saying that "ants worship Kumano", which shows how many people worshipped. There are monuments and stone tablets describing the history of worship on the side of the Kumano Kodo, which is covered with moss stone steps in the greenery. Many people like to use the Kumano Kodo as a walking route.

Senjojiki Rock Plateau

There are large rocks as far as the eye can see. It's fun to run up and down! There are traces of tides and marine life on the rocks, which are natural. It's unexpectedly fun

Shirarahama Beach

The seawater is green. It was early in the morning of New Year so there were not many people. Two families were walking on the beach with their children. It was very nice! The beach was easy to walk on because it had just rained. If it was sunny, it would be very slippery! There is also a small pavilion for free foot bathing nearby! I also found a dolphin-shaped shower device by chance.
