Head to Zhaotong for an encounter with the wilderness and days gone by 🌿 The sheer cliffs of Jigong Mountain in Dashanbao stand tall, layers of mountains unfold like a pale blue scroll, the alpine meadows are vast and soft, little horses roam freely under the clear sky, and the air is filled with the scent of freedom. Walk into Zhaxi Old Street in the evening, where traditional fabric banners and red lanterns complement each other, creating a perfect atmosphere. The Republic of China-era arcade buildings in Zhaotong Ancient Town are lively and vibrant, bustling with people and the essence of daily life. Then visit the Long Family Ancestral Hall, where exquisite wood carvings and paintings hold stories of the past, and every brick and tile hides a rich history. Natural scenery and cultural charm blend here. There is no need to chase the crowds; just take your time to feel the unique romance of northeastern Yunnan. 📝 3-day Zhaotong travel guide ✅ Itinerary Day 1: Dashanbao Scenic Area Focus on visiting Jigong Mountain Grand Canyon and the alpine meadows. Jigong Mountain offers a wide view, allowing you to overlook the rolling mountains. You can easily take stunning, soothing photos of the grasslands in the meadows. Note that the altitude is high, so be prepared for wind and sun protection, and expect large temperature differences between day and night. Day 2: Zhaxi Old Street + Zhaotong Ancient Town Explore Zhaotong Ancient Town during the day, a district with Republic of China-style arcade buildings and local snacks along the street. Head to Zhaxi Old Street in the evening; the night views are very photogenic. Best time to visit: June to September, when the meadows are lush and green, and the climate is cool and suitable for escaping the summer heat.

Excellent Service and Amenities, Slight Drawbacks — traveler post in Weixin

Excellent Service and Amenities, Slight Drawbacks

The reception at the hotel was fantastic! Especially if you opt for the Star Prestige, you get a private check-in and a tour. The 5th and 6th floors are reserved for these guests, featuring a terrace and pool. There's also a complimentary self-service bar with well-prepared snacks and a variety of drinks. Room maintenance was impeccable, and the mattress was the best we've ever had in a hotel. The food was truly refined and very diverse, with an exceptional breakfast as well. To mention a few minor drawbacks: I found the hotel's entrance and bar somewhat cold and uninviting. Additionally, the loud music in the bar made it less ideal for evening conversations and drinks. The downstairs pool area and upper terrace felt quite crowded, and more greenery would have been welcome. Moreover, the predominantly English guests were often noisy and drunk, leading to disrupted sleep due to loud hallway commotions every night. This dampened our overall hotel experience a bit. Nonetheless, thank you for the lovely vacation!

Yunnan's Most Overlooked Millennia-Old Border Town: Step into Zaxi Ancient Town and Witness Living History Deep in the Wumeng Mountains. — traveler post in Weixin

Yunnan's Most Overlooked Millennia-Old Border Town: Step into Zaxi Ancient Town and Witness Living History Deep in the Wumeng Mountains.

When many people travel to Yunnan, Lijiang, Dali, and Shangri-La are usually the first places that come to mind. But if you're truly looking for an ancient town free from excessive commercial packaging—one that retains the historical texture of the borderlands—Zaxi Ancient Town in Weixin County, Zhaotong, will offer a completely different kind of awe. It lacks the noisy crowds of Lijiang Ancient Town and the cookie-cutter aesthetics of endlessly replicated influencer shops. What truly draws you in here is a remarkably rare historical depth: It served not only as an ancient staging post in the Wumeng Mountains but also as a crucial stop in modern Chinese revolutionary history—the Long March left a profound mark here, and the "Zaxi Conference" cemented the town's unique position in modern Chinese history. So, when you visit Zaxi Ancient Town, you're not just looking at old architecture; you're stepping into a historical site that still thrives in real life. 1. Why is Zaxi Ancient Town Called "Zaxi"? The Cultural Convergence Behind the Name The name "Zaxi" itself carries distinct ethnic cultural tones. In Tibetan, "Zaxi" means "auspicious." However, Zaxi in Weixin, Yunnan, doesn't entirely belong to the Tibetan cultural system. Rather, it's a borderland naming relic born from long-term multi-ethnic integration. This area has long sat at the junction of Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou provinces. Thus, the ancient town naturally boasts a triple overlay of cultures: Yunnan's mountainous culture Southern Sichuan's mercantile culture Northern Guizhou's ethnic migration culture This borderland nature means Zaxi Ancient Town was never a single cultural center, but rather a historical node defined by movement. Because of this, the scale of its streets and alleys, the layout of its houses, and the flavors of its food all display a distinct sense of cross-regional fusion. 2. The Real Zaxi Ancient Town: Not Just an Ancient Town, But a Living Old Street The most common misconception when entering Zaxi Ancient Town for the first time is this: It doesn't feel like a typical "ancient town scenic area." There are no uniformly replicated faux-antique storefronts. There are no massive commercial performances. Many streets still retain the authentic, everyday lives of local residents. The old street isn't wide. The flagstone paths rise and fall gently with the terrain. The wooden buildings on both sides mostly retain traditional styles blending Sichuan and Yunnan influences: Overhanging eaves Chuan-dou (pillar-and-tie) timber frames Deep-projecting cornices Wooden window grilles These structures look simple, but they are truly captivating to look at over time. Because they aren't "newly built to look old"; they bear the natural traces of time shaped by long-term use. The blackened wooden beams are the result of cooking smoke. The polished thresholds have been smoothed by years of footsteps. Such details carry more power than any deliberate design. 3. Zaxi Ancient Town's True Historical Status: A Vital Hub on the Sichuan-Yunnan Ancient Road Zaxi Ancient Town's early significance didn't come from tourism, but from transportation. In ancient times, Sichuan salt entering Yunnan and the southward Tea Horse Trade both passed through this area. Within the traditional transportation network, it functioned as a "relay station node." In other words: It wasn't the final destination, but a halfway stop for all passing traffic. Places like this often hold more stories than mere mega-cities. Because everyone passed through: Merchants, porters, salt peddlers, scholars, officials, and monks. Every wave of movement left behind cultural fragments. Therefore, the architectural melting pot you see in the ancient town today is essentially a legacy of its transportation history. 4. The Zaxi Conference: Propelling the Town into the Core Narrative of Modern Chinese History Many tourists only truly grasp the significance of Zaxi Ancient Town because of the Zaxi Conference. In 1935, during the Long March, the Red Army held a pivotal meeting in the Zaxi area, which had a crucial impact on subsequent strategic adjustments. Thus, Zaxi is not merely an ancient town; it is also a vital site of revolutionary history. The Zaxi Conference was a highly critical meeting during the Long March. Its profound significance lies in: Adjusting troop deployments Clarifying strategic directions Stabilizing core decisions during this phase of the Long March Therefore, Zaxi Ancient Town is more than a spot for touring old architecture—it's a historical space woven into the national narrative. You can still feel this historical weight in many neighborhoods today: Walking down the old street, you'll see former revolutionary sites standing right next to ordinary residential homes. History isn't quarantined in a museum; it remains embedded in everyday life. 5. The Best Time for a Slow Stroll Through the Ancient Town is Early Morning If you really want to capture Zaxi Ancient Town at its finest, you absolutely must wake up early. The window between 6:30 AM and 8:00 AM is the perfect time for a stroll through the ancient town. The reasons are simple: Fewer people Soft lighting Life on the old street is just beginning You will see: Shops just opening their doors Residents sweeping their front steps Half-open wooden doors Steam rising from breakfast stalls During this time, Zaxi is at its most authentic. It's not a tourist's perspective, but the natural state of the ancient town waking up. 6. Why Zaxi Ancient Town's Architectural Details Never Get Old Many first-time visitors will say: "It doesn't look as refined as Lijiang." But those who truly understand architecture tend to prefer Zaxi. Because it preserves the authentic logic of borderland dwellings. The wooden structures aren't decorative, but rather functional designs Wood framing is extensively used here for: Damp-proofing Resisting mountain humidity Reducing the building's weight Unusually deep eaves Because the Weixin mountainous area experiences heavy rainfall. Deep eaves can protect the walls. Generally narrow doors and windows For winter insulation. These features aren't prioritized for aesthetics, but are the result of long-term practical experience. 7. The Three Best Angles for In-Depth Photography in Zaxi Ancient Town Angle 1: The depth of the old street Find a relatively long flagstone street. Let the wooden buildings naturally form a perspective line. This is the easiest way to capture the ancient town's layered depth. Angle 2: Eaves and skylight Look up and shoot the eaves. It works best especially on cloudy days. The Wumeng Mountains have low clouds, creating incredibly strong layers. Angle 3: Details of residents' daily lives More important than the architecture is the life happening around it: Drying chili peppers Old locks on wooden doors Bamboo baskets by the door Elders sitting out front chatting These details have high retention rates on platforms like Trip.com. Because they are more real. 8. The Best Experience in Zaxi Ancient Town Isn't the Sights, But the Borderland Breakfast What truly makes you remember an ancient town is often its breakfast. Breakfast in Zaxi Ancient Town has extremely distinct local characteristics: Douhua Mixian (Tofu pudding rice noodles) A Yunnan flavor profile, but leaning more towards southern Sichuan tastes. Kuqiao Baba (Tartary buckwheat flatbread) Very typical of the Wumeng mountainous region. Tudou Baba (Potato patties) A clear reflection of the mountain staple food culture. Larou Mian (Cured meat noodles) Boasting distinct flavors of the Sichuan-Yunnan border. 9. Why Zaxi Ancient Town is Better Suited for In-Depth Travel Than Many Popular Ancient Towns Because it hasn't been overly consumed. Many popular ancient towns have fallen into a standardized template: Coffee shops + bars + guesthouses + homogenized souvenirs. Zaxi is not like that. It still retains: The genuine utility of its old streets Authentic residential living A slow commercial pace This state dictates that: You won't just be "checking in." You'll be stepping into a place that is still alive. 10. The Best Surrounding Attractions to See Alongside Zaxi Ancient Town If you only see the ancient town, the trip isn't quite complete. It's highly recommended to plan for the surrounding areas as well. Zaxi Red Army Martyrs Cemetery Perfect for understanding the complete history of the Long March. Wumeng Mountain Landforms The rolling peaks are incredibly majestic. Surrounding Rural Terraced Fields At their most beautiful in spring and autumn. 11. Zaxi Ancient Town at Night: So Quiet You Can Hear the Wooden Buildings Breathe Zaxi at night is completely different from the daytime. There is no large-scale commercial lighting. Mostly just the warm yellow glow from residential homes. The wooden buildings look exceptionally soft in the dark. Walking down the street, you can hear: Footsteps The clinking of pots and pans The occasional dog barking This kind of night is something many hit ancient towns lost a long time ago. 12. What Truly Moves You is That Zaxi Ancient Town Doesn't Try to Prove Itself It doesn't try to cater to tourists. Nor does it deliberately manufacture an "ancient town vibe." It simply carries on with its original way of life. And this very lack of pretense is exactly what makes it so rare and precious.

📢 Stop crowding the trendy ancient towns! This "fairyland secret" named by National Geographic is actually free! Tired of the same old commercialized ancient towns? Fed up with stinky tofu and Yiwu small commodities everywhere? Take my advice and come to Fubao Ancient Town in Sichuan! There’s no noisy hawking here, only 600 years of peaceful time. Hidden in the deep mountain folds at the junction of Sichuan, Guizhou, and Chongqing provinces, it’s praised by National Geographic as the "essence of Chinese mountain architecture." No entrance fee, no commercialization, just layers of stilted buildings, winding bluestone paths, and the most authentic everyday life. This is what an ancient town should really look like! 😭 📍 Fubao Ancient Town: A “three-dimensional scroll” forgotten by time Founded at the end of the Yuan and beginning of the Ming dynasty, Fubao Ancient Town was once a bustling port on the ancient salt transport route due to its location at the intersection of three provinces. Now the prosperity has faded, leaving behind a "living ancient town." The houses here "grow" on the mountain! Built along the slopes, layered and orderly, with wooden beam-frame structures and hanging gable roofs. Walking on the bluestone path, you look up to flying eaves and down to flowing streams, as if stepping into a Ming or Qing dynasty ink painting. 🏯 ✨ 5 Must-Visit Highlights (suggest screenshot to save) 🏮 Huilong Street: A time tunnel through centuries This is the best-preserved old street in the town, 450 meters long. The street winds up and down, lined with Ming and Qing dynasty buildings. No bar streets here, only old teahouses, blacksmith shops, and grandmas selling local specialties. Every step echoes history. 🏯 Three Palaces and Eight Temples: A treasure trove of ancient architecture Though an ancient town, the standards are very high! Qingyuan Palace, Wanshou Palace, Tianhou Palace, and other "Three Palaces and Eight Temples" are cleverly arranged. Especially the carved beams, painted rafters, and ox-leg window patterns, so exquisite you’ll question reality. Every photo is a classic ancient style shot! 📸 🌉 Huilong Bridge: The best photo spot This Qing dynasty stone arch bridge is the town’s beauty icon. Standing on the bridge, the background is rolling green mountains and layers of stilted buildings. In the early morning or evening, with mist swirling, it’s breathtakingly beautiful! 📸 Viewing Platform: A god’s eye view of the town Don’t just walk the streets, be sure to go 20 meters to the right of the archway to the mountain trail. A 5-minute walk leads to the viewing platform. From here, you’ll understand why it’s called a "gem of mountain architecture." 🌄 🍵 Slow Life Experience: Tea and daydreaming Find an old teahouse, spend a few yuan on a bowl of covered bowl tea, and listen to local elders chatting. Time here seems to flow twice as slow as outside—this is true "reverse tourism"! 🍜 Fubao on the Tip of Your Tongue: A foodie's must-see All the food here is natural mountain produce, no pre-made dishes! · Fubao dried tofu/tofu pudding: A must-eat! Made with high mountain spring water, tender and smooth, spicy and fragrant, just a few yuan a bowl, so delicious it brings tears. · Yulan slices/bamboo shoots: Lots of bamboo here, the bamboo shoots are fresh and crisp, perfect as souvenirs. · Ye’er Ba/Huang Ba: Glutinous rice lovers rejoice! Wrapped in banana leaves, fragrant and soft. · Hejiang early tofu pudding: If you go to the county town, be sure to try the Beimenkou river tofu pudding, paired with stir-fried pig liver and blood vegetable—absolutely amazing! 🚗 Babysitter-level Transportation and Travel Guide 🚙 How to get there? · Self-driving (recommended): Navigate to "Fubao Ancient Town." About 1.5-2 hours from Luzhou, good road conditions but many mountain roads, new drivers should drive slowly. · Public transport: Take a direct bus from Luzhou Bus Station or Hejiang County Bus Station to Fubao Town, about every 15 minutes, very convenient. 🎫 Tickets and Accommodation · Tickets: Free! Free! Free! (Some small attractions may charge, but walking around the ancient town is free). · Accommodation: Most inns in the town are run by locals, simple but very characteristic (about 100-200 RMB); for comfort, stay in Hejiang County town. 🗺️ Suggested itinerary (2 days 1 night) · Day 1: Arrive at Fubao Ancient Town -> Stroll Huilong Street -> Photograph stilted buildings -> Climb viewing platform for sunset -> Stay in town or county. · Day 2: Visit nearby Yulan Mountain National Forest Park (see tree ferns, breathe fresh air) or Yaoba Ancient Town -> Return. 💡 Pitfall Avoidance and Thoughtful Tips · Wear the right shoes! The town is all bluestone paths and steps, never wear high heels, flat shoes are king! 👟 · Mosquito protection: Dense mountain vegetation means more mosquitoes in summer, bring mosquito repellent. · Bring cash: Although most places accept mobile payments, having some cash for grandma’s snacks is convenient. · Be cautious in rain: Bluestone paths are very slippery when wet, be sure to stay safe. 📝 Final ramblings Fubao Ancient Town isn’t perfect; it’s a bit worn, a bit remote, but it’s real. Here, you can see elders carrying baskets on their backs, hear roosters crowing and dogs barking, smell the aroma of firewood-cooked meals. If you want to escape the concrete jungle, come here to daydream—it’s truly healing! 👇 Interaction time: Have you been to such an untouched ancient town? Or do you prefer well-developed scenic spots? Tell me in the comments, let’s avoid pitfalls together! 💬 Fubao Ancient Town

Jiming Sansheng Viewing Platform

The Jiming Three Provinces Observation Deck is located on the cliff of Laoying Rock in the scenic area. The shaped of the rooster is also called the Rooster Singing Observation Deck. The rooster's body stands on the cliff, and its comb hangs over the canyon. From here, you can see the canyon scenery at the junction of Yunnan, Sichuan and Guizhou provinces.

Xingwen Rock Sea

Overall, it was a good experience. The entrance to the scenic area features exposed rock formations that can be visited for free. Once inside, you can walk or take a sightseeing bus to see the narrow gorge, Couple Peaks, Bo People's Village, hanging coffins, a large sinkhole, and an underground cave. Finally, you can take a boat out of the cave and then a bus back to the entrance.

Huangguoshu Scenic Area

I've visited Huangguoshu Waterfall Scenic Area three times over 30 years. It's considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Asia, and the town of Huangguoshu is also quite well-developed. Although the water flow was lower this year, it was still incredibly magnificent, powerful, and thunderous. This time, I had the opportunity to fully appreciate the unique features of the waterfalls in all three sections. If the main waterfall is the head of the family, powerful and imposing, then the upstream Doupotang Waterfall is the steady son, refined and elegant, while the downstream Yinlian Waterfall is the emerald green jade, endlessly captivating and always brimming with charm!

Mount Emei

I set off from Baoguo Temple Service Center at 7:00 AM, took a 2-hour bus ride to Leidongping, and then hiked to the Golden Summit. I didn't take the cable car; it took about an hour to reach the summit. It was foggy that day, so I couldn't see the Buddha statues clearly. I started my descent around 1:00 PM. I saw a few monkeys in the distance. After getting off the cable car, I took another bus to Wannian Temple. The bus pass allows for two hops on and off. When I arrived at Wannian Temple, I saw the Wuliang Hall, which is even older than the Golden Summit. I took the last bus down the mountain at 6:00 PM.

After the Red Army crossed the Chishui River four times during the Long March, the leaders stood at the crossroads of three provinces, surveying the landscape! They held a meeting and decided on the subsequent route of the Long March! We received a profound education from this experience! This scenic spot is a place we've always wanted to visit! I highly recommend it!!!

Hongya Cave

The Two Rivers Ferry is absolutely fantastic! The 15 yuan ticket is incredibly cost-effective! Here's a great route for families with kids: After visiting Jiefangbei and Kuixinglou, see Hongyadong during the day. If you're traveling with a 6-year-old and don't want to brave the crowds at Hongyadong at night, the stilted buildings during the day are just as beautiful. Afterward, take the Two Rivers Ferry to Danzishi, disembark, and explore Danzishi Old Street, Nanbin Road, and Xiahaoli. Then, take the light rail/bus or taxi back. The whole route is smooth and relaxing. The boat ride is novel and fun, and the kids especially loved it, remaining enthusiastic about exploring the shopping streets afterwards. At the pier, there's a large bowl of freshly cut watermelon for 10 yuan – watch it being cut right in front of you! It's sweet and refreshing. I highly recommend this route for families!
