Hotel Las Islas

Hotel Las Islas

Cartagena
This is a very hard review to write. I had dreamed about going to Las Islas for quite some time and ultimately was disappointed. I would ideally rate this hotel at 3.5 stars, but the amazing location tipped the review to 4. The location itself is an easy 5 stars. The property is amazing as you truly feel engulfed in the natural setting. The beach was not very large but was absolutely gorgeous. The accommodations were more like 4 stars. We stayed in the oceanfront casita and were generally happy as it was nice but not perfect but did fit well into the setting. We had our own pool but were hesitant to really use it since you are unable to see the bottom (and it is not deep). I am not sure if this is due to a lack of cleaning or them using sandy seawater (or both), but it was a bit unsettling. The food was also a solid 4 stars. As far as Colombian cuisine goes, it was elevated conceptually and delicious. Unfortunately, the service was 2 stars at best. Since the property is so large, it is necessary to call for a ride from a golf cart to many of the hotel's locations (especially at night). This was never fast. Our waits would generally take about 20 minutes, and one night we had to wait 40 minutes for a cart to arrive. Further upon arrival, we sat in a front ”lobby” for about 25 minutes before we were picked up and driven to our room. At the breakfast restaurant, our orders were wrong either by item or quantity 100% of the time. I would like to blame this on a language barrier, but my wife is Colombian, and I speak fluent Spanish. The beach/lunch service was also frustrating. Unlike other beach locations that we have visited across the world, you had to go and ask the server on the beach anytime you wanted something to eat or drink. This was pretty frustrating. At dinners, the service seemed to be a bit better but was still slow and certainly not perfect. The issue seems to be a lack of management, as I don't believe that we saw a single person that appeared to be acting in a managerial capacity at any point. I honestly think that a bit of training and accountability could make this place what we thought it would be. Unfortunately, for us, once was enough.

Ibis Cartagena Marbella

Cartagena|2.56km from city centre
I had higher expectations after staying at other Ibis locations such as in Rio de Janeiro (Posto 5). We stayed in a standard room with sea view which was a nice surprise. The air conditioning in the room was very silent and efficient but the beds not very comfortable. No fridge and I was told none of the rooms have a fridge. The room was of decent size and similar in that to other Ibis of that category. The window could not be really opened. On the bright side we did not hear any noise during our stay though the other rooms around seemed occupied. The space dedicated to the food (restaurant) was unappealing at best in my view. I found the breakfast to be rather basic. Maybe due to COVID there was no self service but people were served by the staff, which at times caused quite a line to form. Overall I found the staff to be rather cold. Not rude but not very friendly. This was true when facing staff at the reception, at the ”restaurant” and in general in the hotel (including cleaning staff). Possibly I got spoiled in Medellin where practically everyone is so friendly, welcoming and helpful... even more so in hotels. Also the reception staff seemed to have to follow complicated procedures probably aggravated by slow computers systems so the check in was not exactly fast. the location of the hotel is ok. It is an easy and rather quick walk to the old city and the airport is very close (in the other direction). The beach in front of the hotel, across the road, is typical for Cartagena, nothing spectacular but again I am probably spoiled. It was quite windy the two days and a few kite surfers visibly enjoyed both the sea and the wind.

I had stayed at the Allure Chocolat in the past and loved it. I loved the room, rooftop pool and pool bar, great staff and good breakfast. Location is excellent, close to the walled city. I booked this return trip to stay at the Chocolat only to arrive and after checking in the front desk man said by the way our pool is closed during your stay for a private group. Note their their rooftop pool and pool bar is a key reason for staying here for me. I then asked why they was not stated at the time of booking the room and he couldn't answer that but said don't worry, we will send you in a taxi or shuttle to another hotel to use their pool. Unacceptable. I was upset and asked to speak to the manager. His option was to transfer us to their other hotel Allure Canela which has a pool. He said it's close and easy walking distance to the walled city and it would cover my need to have the pool on site without the hassle of taking taxis or shuttles to get to the pool. So I agreed and regretted it. Allure Canela is a nice hotel, but smaller, noisy location and the pool is the size of a large bathtub and seeing all guests was going there from all 3 Allure hotels in town, it was quite busy with no deck chairs to use most of the time. So the point of this feedback is based on the poor management decision of the Allure Chocolat to block the pool for a private group and not warn guests booking rooms on those dates. I feel this was deceptive and ended up paying too much for a room in a hotel in not so great location. I did get free meals for 2 nights, but this didn't make up for the inconvenience and excitement of staying at the Chocolat. I will highlight the front desk man Felix. He was very nice and tried to help at Chocolat when he had to tell me about the lack of pool facilities. Very nice man.

Luxury Large Apartment with Colonial Balcony

Rental basis: Entire house or apartmentNumber of bedrooms: 3; Number of other rooms with beds: 0Guest Friendly spacious two floor luxury apartment with balcony in most central part of Old City, where all the best nightlife, restaurants, and shops are located.Apartment is of historic Cartagena style with ceilings over 30 feet high. This spacious layout features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, immaculate ceiling hung chandeliers, and a spiral staircase to the top floor. The apartment is 135 square meters large in a 17th century house. It is only 3 to 5 minutes away from all the historic monuments, squares, theaters, restaurants and clubs in colonial town, and only 15 minutes walk from the beach. It is reached after one flight of stairs and thus has a beautiful colonial balcony. Moreover, the ceiling of the reception/dining room is ten meters tall, almost as high as a church. It is a reminder of how Cartagena looked like several hundreds years ago. In fact, the owner purchased the property to preserve the architectural patrimony of the city. Sadly, many developers divide the principal area in colonial houses (such as this property) into two apartments as the exceptionally great height allows them to do so, but at the cost of destroying the original glory of the fabulous space. The apartment is also a veritable art gallery with paintings, tapestries and other pieces of art from Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, South Africa,Vietnam, Laos,Nepal, India, Peru, Sri Lanka, Austria,France, Croatia, Serbia, Brazil, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Iran, China, Japan, Mexico and Guatemala. The apartment also offers the following services:(1) Cooking classes, Caribbean food(2) Salsa, merengue classes(3) Live music (Cuban and jazz)(4) Island hopping by boat(5) Massage by a top professional, manicure and pedicure(6) Services of a top notch hairdresser who works for Miss Colombia contest(7) Transfers to/from airport(8) Tours by an art specialist(9) Ecology tours in mangroves with bird spotting(10) Trips to San Basilio de Palenque,

We stayed about 18 people in different rooms of the hotel, the hotel service was very willing to make our accommodation as we requested, the hotel is small but this newly renovated, The best rooms are on the second floor that are the renovated. The hotel was very comfortable and the only thing that was uncomfortable was the noise of a work on the side, but nothing delicate because we weren't staying on the day at the hotel. In general, if you look for a cheap, comfortable, but you don't care about luxury, it's a good option.

The old 5 star hotel that stayed when I first came to CARTAGENA 10 years ago, was very impressed, especially for the courtyard layout, the swimming pool and the restaurant on the side. It arrived at around 10:00 am. It has been 28 hours flight and transfer from Beijing. It is really tired and I don’t want to wait until 3 pm (on the Intercontinental, I’ve received $50 for early check-in). The plan to stay; the front desk said that the room was ready to live, and agreed to advance the breakfast on the last day to the day, it is very rare, thank you! The front desk, restaurant and various services are very thoughtful, although the room looks old, still feel things Great value!
