"The hotel is in a very picturesque location, overlooking a lake. The bedrooms are large, with comfortable beds and prices for a stay are very reasonable. Having said that, the completely uncalled for surly, unfriendly and distinctly unhelpful of one member of staff at reception when we returned to the hotel after going to the Newton Abbot races soured the overnight stay for our group of 7. Firstly, after serving drinks to two members of our group, who arrived at the hotel ahead of the rest of us, he didn't allow them to take the drinks outside to a veranda area so they could have a smoke and could provide no good reason for refusing the polite request. Secondly, when the rest of us arrived at the hotel at around 11.30pm the bar was shut and he refused to serve us any drinks, even though we asked politely, merely wanting one more drink before going to bed. He was also curt, rude and distinctly unhelpful when we asked him to point us in the direction of our rooms, giving one word answers and seeming to regard us all as a hindrance to him. All in all, this experience made us regret our choice of hotel and we are disinclined to return to the hotel in future. A further gripe was that the breakfast service was poor and slow, with cooked breakfasts taking 25 minutes to arrive and many key items missing and not replenished unless guests specifically asked, including cups, tea bags, sugar and orange juice,"

"29/04/2025. We have been to the cliffden hotel three times and had a club room on the first floor they were nice large rooms but this time we were on the second floor our room was very small and claustrophobic nothing like the photos in the booking . We asked for a different room and the man at reception said see me tomorrow morning and if there's a larger room you can have it. Later on in the day my partner went to reception to book a table for an evening meal for us. While she was booking the table the lady at the reception said there were no other rooms you can have. The barman was very polite nice to chat to. We only had one meal in the evening cod and chips could not find much cod it was all batter. Other meal gammon and chips gammon would be good to repair your soles on your shoes. Go to the local chip shop absolutely beautiful. We used the indoor swimming pool which was nice and clean. The gardens are lovely, and the beer is very expensive. Go to the jolly sailor pub with drinks at good prices. Reception is not very helpful. I can't understand why the hotel puts people with dogs on the second floor because when the dog wants to go to the toilet by the time you get down to the entrance the dog has already peed on the carpets. Luckily our dog can hold her pee and she is small enough to carry.I have followed other people with their dogs and seen it. Overall we were very disappointed with our stay this time."
