She wanted a proper ryokan experience, so after some searching, we found one that felt right—well-kept, understated, and quietly confident. We arrived just before 5pm and were met at the car park by a gentleman who greeted us by name and carried our luggage in. Inside, we were welcomed by Na (I hope I got that right), who walked us through everything—the onsen, breakfast, the rhythm of the place—before leading us to our room. The ryokan has been around for close to a century, and you can feel it. Not in a grand or showy way, but in the stillness. Standing by the window, looking down at the pond—ducks drifting across, carp circling slowly—it was almost too quiet, the kind that makes you pause without realising. We headed out briefly that evening to explore the small town and grab dinner, but came back early. The onsen drew us in—hot water against the cool night air—and by the time we laid out the futons, everyone was ready to sink in. Soft, simple, and unexpectedly comfortable. Morning came gently—birds in the background, ducks already awake. At breakfast, our family name was waiting for us, and the spread was generous without being excessive. We ate more than we should have. By 10am, we were packing up again. All the staff was there to send us off.

Although it was quite far from the dining place and the large communal bath in a remote room, I was able to enjoy the summer Obon holiday by freely using the cart. I was impressed by the many stars in the night sky. The bath was also good and I was able to go home with beautiful skin. The landlady came to greet me at the time of meal and asked me to change the rice. Thank you very much. It is a place I want to go again.

The service was very good and the place is amazing. Nevertheless they didn’t allow us to have dinner or breakfast in the hotel as they said it was fully booked, and when requested for late check in we were asked to pay more. It would have been expected to be able to at least check in a bit later since we couldn’t enjoy the dinner or breakfast in the hotel and was inconvenient.

I had a room with a private mini-onsen, Japanese-style. There's a refrigerator in the room, but they don't recommend bringing food to the room. I assume this is to avoid attracting insects. I spent my evenings in the bath admiring the stars. The public onsen is also wonderful (they change the location for women and men every day). The only thing I encountered was an Asian girl sitting in the outdoor public pool taking photos; after I made a comment, she left. The Japanese-style breakfast and dinner are very generous. I couldn't always finish them. I want to come back again. Although the swimming season officially opens in July, I swam in the sea; the water was about 20 degrees Celsius. Some people complained about the outdated design, but for me, that's actually the highlight of this hotel—the Japanese atmosphere with bamboo flooring and mats.

The overall environment is nice, with a sea view. However, since it's off-season, some bar singers aren't working. Driving here is a good option, but taking the bus is inconvenient, with buses running every hour. I didn't realize when booking that the room was for one person only. When checking out, because we were two people, the hotel asked me to pay an additional 800 RMB. They didn't mention the extra fee at check-in... The service experience wasn't very good. I certainly didn't notice this small detail, so please be aware of it when booking.

The location is a little distance from the bus station, about a 10-minute walk, or you can take a bus for one stop; the hotel entrance is right next to the bus stop. Walking directions can also lead to the bus stop, but Google Maps led me to the back entrance after following the hotel address, and I had to walk around for a while before finding it… The guests seemed to be mostly locals, and the facilities were quite good. I really liked the outdoor hot spring, but you can see the rooftop windows a bit further away, so I'm not sure if those are the guest rooms. There's free billiards, a claw machine, and bicycles in the lobby, but I didn't use them; I don't know if they're free.

The room was surprisingly large in Japan, probably because it's a Japanese-style tatami room, with room for multiple tatami mats. Room: Spacious enough, the floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the ocean and park, a real plus. The door opens with a key, and if it's unlocked, it can be opened from the outside, so be mindful of safety. Access: Near the Kaiyu Park-mae bus stop, but the bus only runs a few times a day and there's no shuttle. Alternatively, you can walk to Shimoda Station, which is about a 20-minute walk along the national highway. At night, it's dark and unlit, so be mindful of traffic. Surroundings: 7-Eleven and Sukiya are both within walking distance, making it convenient for stocking up. There's a park downstairs with a beautiful lawn, perfect for taking photos. Facilities: This is quite old, so the facilities are only average. There's no Wi-Fi in the rooms, but there is in the common areas. Since there's no Wi-Fi, the TV doesn't have internet access, so it's basically unusable. The hot water takes a while to come on, and the bathroom is a pure Japanese design, with a low showerhead and a small bathtub that requires a small stool for washing. Whether you like it or not depends on personal preference. Onsen: There are large, indoor baths with separate men's and women's baths. There are windows overlooking the outside, but the view isn't very clear. The water quality feels similar to hot springs in China. There are two massagers, which I tried and found to be more comfortable than those in China, providing some relief.

The hotel seems a bit out of the way in terms of location. It's a few minutes' walk from Shimoda Station. The room is not small. There is a hot spring but no wifi. Overall, it's okay. The transportation is pretty convenient and the price/performance ratio is good.
