Holden Manz Country House

Although the main house, grounds and staff were very good our room left a lot to be desired. I did ask if the room could be changed but this could not be done. Although we were offered the chance to look at an hotel across the road instead, after a long road journey, 30c heat and cases already in our room, we were tired and decided it would just be easier to stay as only 3 nights. Unfortunately the tap in the kitchen area fell off immediately when we went to fill the kettle. It was repaired the following day. The kitchen area itself was poor with no fridge, so unless we asked constantly for ice or cold water, which is a nuisance, we couldn’t keep anything cool. The tap in the bathroom was also leaking profusely and needs repairing and the arm came off the chair. The other issue with our room was a steep outside staircase which one had to negotiate with care. It was a shame as other than our classic suite 5, Holden Manz had much to offer. All the hotels on our South Africa trip lived up to expectations with the exception of room 5.

The property has a lot of potential. Rooms look very modern when arriving. However staying in the room has few flaws: 1) Bath in middle of room looks great but very impractical. It would however make a great spot for a dressing table and mirror with great lighting for a lady to do her makeup. 2) The shower and toilet in same area. No Privacy. The toilet gets wet from the shower. The floor stays wet for hours and if you used it your clothes would get wet. 3) Great lighting system. However it controls all the lights at once. Cam be dimmed as required but individual lights , like most guest houses, would be much better. 4) Staff are very friendly. However it is very obvious that the owner is not present on site. Place needs the personal touch. 5) Breakfasts are sufficient but rather poor choice. EG. Toast, but no jam, offered eventhough on menu. (Menu's need to be thrown away and clean ones used. Very offputting before a meal)
L'Ermitage - Franschhoek Chateau & Villas

We booked and paid for our unit for 10 nights. The view from the apartment has nothing to do with what you see on the website. At best, we could see a slither of lake, electric fencing and construction scars. The nice people at the reception seemed to think that this wasn’t an issue. We did. The noise of sewer pipe construction was daily, loud and invasive. An overpowering sewer smell emanating from the bathrooms encouraged our guests to leave after 24 hours. The following day we informed the reception who acknowledged the problem and fielded our repeated complaints with the provision of “smelly-sticks” in bottles to mask the stench. The sewer problem was continuous until our early departure. We coped with this with by lightning-speed toilet visits and using the kitchen sink for washing and tooth brushing. We made sure that loo stops were made in local cafes or reception before returning in the evening. We also found that airline earplugs in our noses made showering possible. The hot water worked well though. We had no power back-up for SIX days. They furnished us with two Iittle electric portable lamps and we had to make do with these and the flashlights on our iPhones. Eventually, engineers appeared on day 7, did some work in the garage and then there was light. Day 5 and 6 saw the end of water. There was just a dribble, enough to cook with, but no showers, dishwashing or toilet flushing was possible At this point we asked our second guests to abandon their trip to stay with us as the sewer smells were still unacceptable. The wifi still didn’t work well upstairs (12.6 Mbps upstairs) but the water did. By day 9 the stink was so bad we threw in the towel and left a day early. Enough was enough and we did not feel well. We shared this information and a request for a partial refund with l’Ermitage who responded by saying “sorry” and would do better when we next stayed with them. What a disgrace.

This is the second time staying at this small hotel and we recently spent four nights. The hotel is under new ownership since our last visit, but all of the wonderful staff are the same and Billy even remembered us from two years ago. We like the fact that you can walk into town easily from here. The breakfast is wonderful and filling. We can’t say enough about the friendliness of the staff, especially Lovemore and Billy, as well as the new owners, Steve and Shan. Steve can show you an app to use to figure out the load shedding times which are common in South Africa. We appreciate that the rooms have a coffee maker and a small refrigerator as well as very comfortable beds and a spacious bathroom. We plan to stay here again when we make the long trek back to SA from California.
The Ivy Apartments Franschhoek

Stayed here, in Apartment 8, for two nights as part of our month-long tour in South Africa. Our apartment was fabulous; twin bedroom & bathroom downstairs & “master” bedroom with en suite on a mezzanine floor. The living space downstairs is well p,Anne’s with everything that you’ll need for a few days’ stay. The complex also provides secure car parking and communal outside space including a small pool. The apartments are well placed within Franschhoek, something like 5 minutes’ walk from the Wine Tram terminal. There is a cafe on the corner of the street, open for breakfast, lunch & probably dinner. Looking wider, there are a range of cafes & restaurants on the Main Street through town, together with a couple of supermarkets, so all in all, everything you need for a self catering stay, and of course, there’s no shortage of wines supplies around town.
Ashbourne Boutique Guest House

We stayed for two nights in this lovely Guest House with fantastic views of the mountains. An extremely comfortable room, an excellent breakfast and a convenient location for everything in Franschhoek. However, what really makes this property stand out as special are the staff - Cindy and Courtney were brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they were on hand to answer any questions we had. Thank you for being such thoughtful and caring hosts.
