KK Beach

Right on the beach front but with its own swimming pool which is an essential as the sea can be very dangerous with a wicked undertow which would have you hitting Antarctica, the next ‘land,’ before you could say penguin! The accommodation was ok, the room was named as an ‘ocean deluxe double’ suggesting it’s a better room than the norm when, from what I can make out from the website, it‘s their basic room, next up is a Suite then a Penthouse etc. etc. That’s not to say it was not a nice room. The ‘All Day Menu’ was rather dull and the three-course evening offering was ridiculous at $40 each, plus it was uninspiring. One is a bit stuck though, as there is little option but to eat in or take a long TukTuk ride to find an alternative. We have found with all places, except our first hotel, that portions are generous and a Caesar Salad, which I thought would be a nice ‘starter’ turned out to be the size of a main, fine in itself but not when it was to be followed by a rice and curry main meal! Stuffed was not the word for it. The staff were all friendly and courteous and the service was exemplary as is the norm in Sri Lanka. However, despite quoting prices in USD you can only pay in rupees so are subject to a rather arbitrary exchange rate. We were there to wind down from close on a month of travelling prior to flying home and in that respect, it ticked all the right boxes.
Ahu Bay

We visited Ahu Bay to celebrate our anniversary. It's a lovely small hotel for adults and older children (younger kids are not allowed). The rooms are small, but well appointed and very comfortable. We had a direct view of the ocean. The food was excellent. The pool was lovely, and a great place not just for a swim but to also to lounge around and read. The spa was good. The only negative was that the beach is not private AT ALL. Sri Lankan hotels don't generally have private beaches, but often at boutique hotels you get a lot of privacy at the beaches. But in this case there were men hanging around the area right outside our rooms, and it really felt intrusive. During the day every time we stepped onto the beach area there were 4-5 of them hanging around and starting at us, which made us feel very uncomfortable. Wish the hotel could come to some understanding with the locals about this. Other than that our stay was very enjoyable.

We stayed here in March 2024 and had a truly wonderful experience! We had a Dip Pool room which overlooked the jungle and the sea. You truly can watch the monkeys all around you whilst you dip! A magical experience! And the bird song…. Beautiful! We walked nearly every day down through the village to the most stunning beach area- quite often with no one or very few people on it! Walk back is up hill and sultry so take water! The hotel is as amazing as it is, due to the staff! Nothing is ever too much trouble ❤️ we were looked after wonderfully by the team but special thanks to Milinda, Sahan, Akila, Samira and kithmina. They were all so kind and attentive in making sure our stay was special. The food is great, we were half board and were happy to eat at the hotel. The chef, Mohan, was so kind in adapting some dishes for me as I’m pescatarian. Again nothing was too much trouble ❤️ Plenty to do in the area, or not if you’d prefer just to lie back and relax in the hotel. Literally my own criticism is they need more beds around the pool. 4 moveable beds with 2 umbrellas are fine but the built in beds, whilst a nice idea, are in the shade from 10:30 onwards.if the hotel is busy you’ll be in the shade all da. We at least had our room and pool if we couldn’t get a bed but not everyone has the option. I’ve never stayed at a hotel where the staff buy you a leaving gift, with such special thanks to Upeka for that! And also for being such a wonderful human and adding to the ‘special’ of this hotel! An amazing hotel, in a wonderful country with beautiful people ❤️

So many reviewsby people needing the assistance of the manager & staff. For what? One person said they had the manager's phone number to call 24/7. Why? Reception provide you with an information sheet. This hotel must have to deal with so many needy, ignorant, clueless people. Can't blame the hotel for having a generic response to reviews. All the staff at reception & restaurant were friendly, well trained & helpful. My room was clean & spacious. Wardrobe & a long shelf with minibar spirits, kettle & free water. Everything worked fine. Lighting was good. The balcony had a table & 2 chairs. The bed had clean linens, 4 pillows, 2 cushions & provided me with a comfortable sleep. There was a power point on one side. Breakfast was a buffet with an egg station so you won't go hungry. I had dinner one night at the restaurant having ordered yellow fin tuna which was very nice. Staff were attentive & provided excellent service. The pool is a decent size & well maintained. Overall, I had an enjoyable & comfortable experience at what is a true 3 star hotel.
