The best onsen ryokan I’ve ever been to. If I could gatekeep this place, I would! Love every part of it, so zen so clean and quiet. The food is amazing especially the beef. The onsen is amazing, they have public and private indoor and outdoor onsens, you don’t even have to worry about not getting the private onsen slots. They are always available. Love the outdoor onsen the most! I will be back next year :)

The owner seemed a bit overwhelmed handling everything alone. It was great to experience a Japanese-style accommodation that felt straight out of 'Detective Conan.' The hot spring was also lovely. Although it's an old place, so a slight drain smell is unavoidable, it was still quite clean. It was also very convenient for visiting Kagami-koji the next day.

We visited to Yakidake Garden Hotel in Feb’24. First of all their outdoor onsen is absolutely worth to pay a visit. Think about you may enjoy fantastic snow view while relaxing in comfortable onsen with love one and friends in group (body wrap cloth is provided by hotel). Secondly the hotel is surrounded by wonderful view. You can even see waterfall from corridor window! Last but also I recommend this hotel the most is their package meal and service. Hida beef included set dinner is served at high level standard. Staffs are helpful, rooms are tidy and well equipped. We absolutely will come back upon next visit to Takayama area.

This was such a lovely place to stay. The room was nice and spacious, allowing us to feel at home. Not only were we taken care of by means of beautiful breakfast and dinner, but the staff were extremely helpful when we talked to them about hiking in Kamokochi. I would highly recommend booking this place especially with a meal plan, since it was nice to have food sorted after Hiking all day.

One of the best I have experienced with ryokan staying. I love a small hotel/inn as it is not crowded. This place answers my expectations. Its location is a bit far off but it is not an issue. It is accessible by public bus from Takayama. Each room has private onsen. It also has 2 outdoor, private onsen on first-come-first-serve basis. There are also public baths for male and female. Room was in good condition. Bathroom is a bit small for me. Only complaint I would have was foot step noise from the room on upper floor. Very annoyed. Food was great. I stayed 2 nights, the hotel provided 2 different types of food - appreciated. Highway recommended.

Among the hot spring villages in Okuhida, Hirayu Onsen boasts the longest history. One of its most renowned features is a special hot spring that blends four different sources and uses a free-flowing system, meaning the water is not recycled, allowing you to enjoy the purest and freshest onsen experience. The facility includes eight different baths, each with its own unique charm—two open-air baths, a garden bath with a thatched-roof gazebo, and an indoor bath in the main hall. Soaking in these waters while feeling the seasonal changes of Okuhida all around you is truly an exceptional and unforgettable experience.
At our facility, guests with tattoos or body art, regardless of size, are kindly asked to refrain from using the public bath.

Amazing
BBubble RI had a really pleasant stay at Hotel and Spa Gift Takayama. The highlight was definitely the onsen — it’s clean, relaxing, and has both indoor and outdoor baths. After a long day of exploring Takayama, it was the perfect way to unwind. The free ice cream and relaxation area after the bath were a nice touch.
The room was modern, comfortable, and very clean. It’s not very large (typical Japan size), but well-designed so it didn’t feel cramped. The bed was also very comfortable, and I slept well. I like the morning view especially.
I also want to give a special mention to one of the staff members — I only remember his name starting with “M” (wearing glasses)— who was exceptionally kind and helpful during our stay. He made the experience feel much more welcoming and went out of their way to assist, which I really appreciated.
Location-wise, it’s not right next to the main station, but still within walking distance to most attractions, so it was convenient enough. The area is quiet, which I appreciated.
One downside was that we, 7pax of us weren’t able to enjoy the hot pot dinner as planned. We had made a reservation, but it didn’t seem to be properly handled, and we were unfortunately turned away. It was a bit disappointing, especially since we were looking forward to that experience.
Breakfast was decent, good enough to start the day.
Overall, I think this hotel offers great value for money, especially if you want a comfortable stay with a good onsen experience without paying luxury ryokan prices. I would still consider staying here again, but would recommend double-confirming any dining reservations in advance.
GGuest UserThis hotel is super convenient for solo travelers, being close to both the train and bus stations. The room was incredibly clean and surprisingly spacious for a standard room in Japan – we could easily fit two large suitcases! The hotel's location is also great, close to popular attractions and restaurants.
GGuest UserThe location is great, right next to the station. On the day we checked in, we only waited five minutes in line at noon to eat at Ajikura Tengoku. In the afternoon, we took a taxi to Hida no Sato around 5 PM, and at 6:30 PM, we took a taxi directly to Maruaki, where we only waited about 20 minutes to get a table. It wasn't as exaggerated as some posts on Xiaohongshu (a Chinese social media platform) made it out to be.
The hotel room was a bit small, but the breakfast was decent.
Overall, there's no real need to stay a night in Takayama; you can just go straight to Hirayu.
Both Maruaki and Ajikura were delicious. I highly recommend ordering the most affordable Hida lean meat directly, skipping the set menus, and don't bother with A5. We even had Maruaki again in Nagoya, ordering 6 plates of lean meat and 3 plates of beef tongue. It was a very satisfying meal.
ZzizibehappyArriving in Takayama by highway bus, I chose to stay at the same Residence Hotel as my previous visit. It's incredibly convenient, located just a left turn from the Nohi Bus Terminal exit, making it zero distance from both the bus and JR stations. The luxury suite is huge, featuring a balcony, four beds, and a fully equipped kitchen with pots, pans, a microwave, and a large refrigerator. The washing machine with a dryer was an absolute lifesaver. Even better, all the drinks in the fridge were complimentary, including two 2L bottles of mineral water, beer, sake, green tea, and cola. Basic condiments like salt, soy sauce, pepper, and cooking oil were also provided. There's a supermarket right next door, perfect for buying Hida beef and cooking up a feast.
GGuest UserThis place is super convenient, just a one-minute walk from Takayama Station East Exit! It's also about a 10-minute stroll to Miyagawa Morning Market, which is perfect for a leisurely walk. Takayama itself is so charming and historic, I really loved it ❤️.
The hotel's back door leads straight to Ajikura Tengoku, and let me tell you, the Hida beef there is absolutely delicious, even better than Kobe beef! We got our number at 4:45 PM during Golden Week and didn't get to eat until 7:30 PM, but thankfully, since we were staying so close, we could relax at the hotel while waiting. My tip: if you want to eat there, go early to get a number!
The only minor downsides were that the room was a bit on the small side, though we could still open our luggage. The public bath was decent, but it was quite crowded during Golden Week. And the breakfast was just okay – probably not worth booking every day if you're staying for a while.
AAnonymous UserThis hotel is incredibly convenient if you're traveling with kids to Shin-Hotaka or heading to the ski resort. It's super close to both the JR station and the Nohi Bus Terminal. Staying here for multiple nights was hassle-free; you can store your luggage for free, and the hotel itself is beautiful, clean, and well-maintained. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who needs a place to stay. The only minor downside is that the breakfast is quite simple (a fixed set menu as pictured), and there aren't other options available if you're staying multiple nights with a group.
AAnonymous Userextraordinary onsen experience. very nice and friendly staff. have to wear socks/ bare foot inside the hotel, giving a vibe of coming back home. hotel room isn’t too big but still acceptable.
GGuest UserThe hotel room was spacious and clean. They offered complimentary drinks upon arrival in the afternoon, including free beer! After a relaxing hot spring bath, there were free cold drinks available. The surrounding area is lovely, and it's just a short walk to the attractions. Getting to Takayama Station was also super convenient.
MMike IgOur stay at Ryokan Gizan was a truly memorable experience. This is a traditionally built and decorated Japanese ryokan, with tatami floors, sliding doors, and an authentic atmosphere that makes you feel fully immersed in Japanese culture. It’s definitely a “must-visit” if you’re looking to experience traditional Japanese accommodation — even a short stay of 2–3 nights is enough to make it special.
The ryokan is quite old, which actually adds to its authentic charm, though it might feel a bit less comfortable for more demanding guests. That said, it’s very well maintained and everything is clean and thoughtfully arranged.
The onsen facilities were excellent — one public bath and four private ones that you can use freely. After long days of exploring, it was a real treat.
We highly recommend booking with the traditional dinner included. The meals were a highlight: we had Yakiniku the first night and Shabu-shabu the second, both featuring fresh, generous portions of delicious food. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese set — beautifully presented and made with care, though not quite to our personal taste.
The location is stunning — surrounded by mountains, rivers, and blossoming trees. It feels peaceful and remote. Just note that amenities like ATMs or grocery stores are limited nearby. However, it’s well connected by bus (just a 3-minute walk from the ryokan), which can take you to Kamikochi or the terminals at Takayama and Hirayu Onsen. Buses run about once an hour, so it’s quite manageable.
Overall, a fantastic stay — relaxing, unique, and highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a more traditional and scenic side of Japan.
南南方澳配速員The hotel is in an excellent location with great amenities nearby. It's just a bridge away from Miyagawa Morning Market and very close to the old town of Takayama. During my two-day stay, all the other guests I encountered were European, and I was the only Asian person in the entire backpacker room, which was a very unique experience.
In recent years, public awareness for body health has increased, so many hotels have fitness rooms.
