This has to be the best hotel to stay in Takayama for new travellers who have never been to Takayama. The hotel is just opposite the train and bus station. Its unique artitecture make it impossible to miss. The hotel is old as it’s built in 1990s but it’s cozy. The onsen is comfortable and the local breakfast is definitely value for money and good to include. I also love the room with the old school buttons conventionally located. Bed is comfortable and heater works. It’s also not hard to find food and sourvenir shops as they are just below and around the neighbourhood. You can easily access fast food like McDonald or head to old town for traditional food. I will suggest you visit the 2nd street located near McDonald and the supermarket there as things are much cheaper. Overall I love my stay in Washington Takayama as a new traveller to the town.

We love this hotel.. I really like Takayama unfortunately I stayed only 1 N as a stopover. We will visit again. The only issues is i do prefer high floor.. and was given 2nd but since we only stay for 1nite .. I did not change. Will visit again. Did not have time to check out other part of the facilities. We ordered dinner and breakfast with accommodation.. the dinner was excellent . Breakfast spread is great.. lots of choices. Service is excellent in the restaurant.

The room is a lot bigger than I expected it to be. I could open my (clamshell-type) luggage fully and still have space to walk!! The hostel is located about a 10min walk, down a straight main road, away from the train/bus station/terminal. Not exactly a pleasant walk in the summer heat, but for the price I gave it no mind. Am very thankful that the hostel has an elevator, saved me from having to lug my luggage up the stairs. It’s also such a sweet touch for the hostel staff to left a sweet (handwritten) welcome message on the bedside table! Takayama is rather walkable city, so it wasn’t troublesome to get to most of the tourist spots on foot!

Amazing
GGuest UserThe Wi-Fi was terrible; there was none in the room initially. They fixed it later, and I got two bars of signal, but it was still poor. There's no hot spring here; what they call a hot spring is just tap water. The bedding was awful; I got bitten all over and felt very itchy, and the duvet cover kept coming off the comforter. This price is just not worth it; my child's skin was red and itchy from bites.
AAnonymous UserSuper comfortable for solo traveler. The room is booked actually able to accommodate 2 person. Just a few minutes walk from Takayama station. For light sleeper be mindful of rambling sound of train. Basically Takayama is a small town walking seems to be the ideal way to tourist spots. Overall I enjoyed my stay at the hotel.
CCrystallmoonIt was a wonderful stay in this Modern but yet a little traditional hotel. It is not fully a Ryokan but yet the whole hotel is on Tatami from lift lobby right to your room. Onsen was good as there are private and public pools available. Not forgetting serving free Ramen for supper is definitely a plus point especially in winter.
WWilliamgray81The quality of the hotel is very high. It's conveniently located near the train station and a 15 minute walk to the old town. The spa is really nice, clean, and spacious. The family spa is a nice touch. Rooms are very large, comfortable beds, with a tub. The only drawback is breakfast. The restaurant is too small to accommodate guests. It's odd that it's common in Japan to have large hotels, with many guests, include breakfast, and then build a tiny restaurant. Makes no sense. Options are limited and food is the same every day. I wouldn't recommend it, but there's so few options nearby or in the town in general, that you basically have to eat there. Just go before 8 AM. Otherwise, the hotel is really nice.
GGuest UserThis was such a lovely place to stay.
The room was nice and spacious, allowing us to feel at home.
Not only were we taken care of by means of beautiful breakfast and dinner, but the staff were extremely helpful when we talked to them about hiking in Kamokochi.
I would highly recommend booking this place especially with a meal plan, since it was nice to have food sorted after Hiking all day.
MMike IgOur stay at Ryokan Gizan was a truly memorable experience. This is a traditionally built and decorated Japanese ryokan, with tatami floors, sliding doors, and an authentic atmosphere that makes you feel fully immersed in Japanese culture. It’s definitely a “must-visit” if you’re looking to experience traditional Japanese accommodation — even a short stay of 2–3 nights is enough to make it special.
The ryokan is quite old, which actually adds to its authentic charm, though it might feel a bit less comfortable for more demanding guests. That said, it’s very well maintained and everything is clean and thoughtfully arranged.
The onsen facilities were excellent — one public bath and four private ones that you can use freely. After long days of exploring, it was a real treat.
We highly recommend booking with the traditional dinner included. The meals were a highlight: we had Yakiniku the first night and Shabu-shabu the second, both featuring fresh, generous portions of delicious food. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese set — beautifully presented and made with care, though not quite to our personal taste.
The location is stunning — surrounded by mountains, rivers, and blossoming trees. It feels peaceful and remote. Just note that amenities like ATMs or grocery stores are limited nearby. However, it’s well connected by bus (just a 3-minute walk from the ryokan), which can take you to Kamikochi or the terminals at Takayama and Hirayu Onsen. Buses run about once an hour, so it’s quite manageable.
Overall, a fantastic stay — relaxing, unique, and highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a more traditional and scenic side of Japan.
GGuest UserWhat an amazing hotel. First of all it is located in an amazing location very close to the bus station. Very close to ski places. As a hotel has onsens where you can relax. This was not very clear to the description, so I mention it here in the comment. Keep in mind that because the onsens are not for private use men and women are separated. The hotel was providing kimonos for men and women and sandals. It was super clean and we spent 2 nights, 3 days of our trip there where we fully relaxed while enjoying the hotel and the area like visiting takayama which is very close. The breakfast was very nice, and the dinner was a buffet. We didn't book in advance dinner but we had the option to pay extra so we enjoyed both nights the dinner, which was very good.
GGuest UserRoom is small, typical Japan budget hotel. They only got 2 floors with no elevator, so we’re lucky that our room in first floor. Didn’t manage to try their free supper but they do have free supper.
Location is not close to train station buy they have shuttle which goes from and to hotel quite often.
There’s one family mart across the hotel which is quite helpful because there’s no other restaurant nearby!
南南方澳配速員The hotel is in an excellent location with great amenities nearby. It's just a bridge away from Miyagawa Morning Market and very close to the old town of Takayama. During my two-day stay, all the other guests I encountered were European, and I was the only Asian person in the entire backpacker room, which was a very unique experience.
