Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel

The location of the room is very good, on the top of the mountain, overlooking the entire harbor, the location can not see the sunrise, but the sunrise is beautiful pink blue! The sunset is not bad, breakfast is average, simple!

CONS (but bear with me): This hotel is sorely in need of upgrades. The light switches look like they're from the 1960's (or earlier?). I don't mean that as exaggeration for effect. Also, please know that the hot tub does not work and the front desk clerk mentioned that it has been shut down for good, covid or no covid, due to pipe leaks. On the plus side, the rooms themselves while small and slightly shabby are super clean and tidy. This is no ”fleabag hotel.” The beds and bedding are comfortable. The shower works great, the towels are fluffy, and the tap water is also oddly delicious. We felt quite cozy in our room. Also, the view from the balcony down the hall was really great. It was a nice, inviting place to hang out. I felt like, for Catalina, this place was a super deal. Just be aware of the shortcomings before you book here so you do not expect this hotel to be something that it is not. It should have been classed 2 stars, not 3. I strongly recommend it as an affordable, comfortable way to stay overnight in Avalon. (for the record, i did not see any ghosts etc and the property had ”good vibes” for whatever that's worth.)

Catalina Island Inn

The hotel has been renovated fairly recently but is already starting to show some wear and tear. We have stayed a couple of times in different rooms but unfortunately don’t think we will be back. We stayed in a bunk room previously and had an issue with the smaller than functional linen closet (my 12 yr old 5’0 / 87lb daughter couldn’t even shower without bumping walls and having to wash legs outside of the shower stall - you literally can not bend or lift legs to wash below the waist). I thought maybe it was a result of the room being designed as an afterthought and selected a standard double for our most recent stay. Sadly I was wrong and the shower was just as tiny. The whole room was tiny, very cramped, nowhere to put your personal items or bags, nowhere to sit, one bedside drawer and was really lacking in cleanliness. There were literally 2 outlets in the room. One in the bedside lamp and one in the bathroom- however - with a small pedestal sink and zero countertop there is nowhere to use any hair tools and be able to set them down or set down any products, make up, toothbrushes etc. Our sink had a slow leak. I had brought a small birthday banner and some small decorations to put up for my daughter’s birthday and there was really literally nowhere to put it. We stayed for 5 days - perhaps 1 or 2 nights max for a single or couple would be ok but for a family of 3 for an extended time was awful. We were stepping over our suitcases, had to dig through our bags each time we needed anything and couldn’t keep our clean clothes and towels separate from our ‘dirty/wet’ items without sleeping with them in/on the bed or putting them back in our suitcase. Our first day we noticed the shower wash, shampoo and conditioner dispensers were empty and were told they “ran out” so we had to go shopping for the week. Most of the staff are friendly. The door which is supposed to be locked after hours is not so even my daughter commented “what if we weren’t staying here - we could be any random walking up to the rooms”. In hindsight, I wish I would’ve taken pictures. Again, we have given this hotel a couple of chances and it’s ok but for the price (over $1300 including a special extended stay “deal” for 4 nights) albeit a pretty good location, but we likely will not be back.
Hotel Atwater

Everything in Avalon is walkable , and the Atwater has been a haven for savvy travellers for decades , those who want to experience the restaurants and bars of the harbour area and then walk back to a quiet safe refuge . The room was not the largest , although it had a great view of the harbour . What it lacked in size it redeemed itself in cleanliness , comfort and amenities . The hotel bar is offsite , a few steps from the hotel at the “ Avalon Grill “ .. Atwater guests get a $20 room credit to spend here .. the place was built and created for the Wrigley family .. they were no strangers to luxury and the finer things in life , so to walk in their footsteps gives you an idea of the experience that awaits .. Highly recommended..
Glenmore Plaza Hotel

This was our first time here and stayed on the recommendation of someone else. Our normal place to stay has been sold and is closed. The hotel is large, clean and has some really interesting woodwork as it is over 100 years old. Wainscoting in the halls, stairs, lobby etc. The stairway is wide with wood handrails. However, on our way down the stairs right at the lobby, it is dark and my husband missed the last step and luckily he caught himself before falling. The person on duty asked if he was okay, which he was. However, the next time we went to the room, they had put a bright orange rug in front of the stairs. It was easier to see. We were on the second floor and there is no elevator unless they are hiding it. The rooms on their website look beautiful. But that is not what we got. Our room was a good size, not too small. Queen bed, beat up dresser, newer TV and Dish cable, portable air conditioning, microwave, fridge, small table with two chairs, large closet, tub with shower and more. BUT there was hardly any decorating done to the room. It has wainscoting all around and nice crown moulding, but they forgot the personal touch. There were two or three pictures but that was it. The window coverings were wood blinds and only one of them worked because of the floor air-conditioning that had a large vent running to the window. The window obviously was always partially open. They only good thing is that we looked towards the back of the hotel. There no lights or noise to bother us. Had the room had some personal touches and get rid of the that air conditioning unit, we would think differently about the hotel. In addition, they are replacing the wood siding on the hotel and our room had a view of scaffolding. We come ofter to Avalon and will have to think hard if we want to try this place again.
