Sheriff Lodge

We had a wonderful 3-night stay at Sheriffs Lodge in Matlock and couldn’t have asked for a better break. The place itself is spotlessly clean, with a quirky charm that really makes it stand out and feel special. Breakfast each morning was a real highlight—absolutely excellent. We especially loved the full Derbyshire, and the fresh fruit was a perfect touch. Everything was clearly locally sourced, fresh, and full of flavour. It was all served hot and promptly by the lovely Ziz, who made us feel so welcome throughout our stay. A special mention has to go to meeting Ziz’s beautiful Boxer—such a lovely addition that made the stay even more memorable! The location is brilliant too, with easy access to attractions like the Heights of Abraham and Chatsworth House, plus plenty of other great things to do nearby. The walk into Matlock is short but steep—but that just made all the delicious food feel well earned! All in all, a fantastic stay. We’d happily return and would highly recommend Sheriffs Lodge to anyone visiting the area. Thank you for such a lovely little break!

Ziz was very hospitable. What a lovely place to stay. Good location. Lovely rooms, nothing was too much trouble. Rooms had everything you needed and more. Breakfast was really good, table beautifully set in a lovely room. We look forward to staying again.

Conveniently located 5 min walk from the centre of the village of Matlock, Sheriff Lodge is a great choice for a few days in the Peaks. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our clean, spacious and charming room. With 3 windows, an armchair in the bay window, a huge bed and many small details that made it really special. There were chocolates in a dish on the vanity, glasses, mugs and good selection of teas and hot chocolate. Appointed for people exploring the Peak District, there was tray for muddy boots and hooks for wet coats. The room was cosy and warm but just in case there was an extra electric radiator and a blanket. There was a selection of books to read and a large TV if you prefer to watch. In the wardrobe were complimentary slippers and a box full of useful bits such as a shoe horn, sewing kit, toothpaste and sanitary products. You pick a time slot for breakfast so you don't have to wait. With a choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, traditional breakfast, mushrooms and local specialities. A lovely place to stay.

We had a lovely stay at Sheriff lodge ,ziz was a lovely host and her breakfast were soooooo nice ,our room was amazing, close to the town centre and lovely places to eat, would recommend staying here %, we will back.

We have returned again to see Ziz. Stayed in The Warren downstairs for the first time. It was great. Like our own suite. A Warren indeed. We had an itinerary but Ziz recommended an extra idea which made for a full weekend. Ian and I cannot recommend anywhere else. No.1 in Derbyshire for us. Every time we know it is just quality which we appreciate. We look forward to our next adventure.Thank you Ziz. David and Ian.

My husband and I were disappointed with the poor welcome we received. We had hoped she might have smiled and wished us a nice stay. Very limited breakfast hours and early departure meant we had to rush the breakfast which seemed to be a lot of trouble for the landlady. She was surprised that we made a request for toast! It was a sad experience for us and not one we would ever like to repeat! I think the over confident reply suggests that the days of inflexible B&Bs may be coming to an end as more holidaymakers choose the more flexible and more humane option of Airbnb. Beware complacency! You don’t build a hospitality business on policies. Shouldn’t it be about kindness and a desire to be hospitable?

I really struggle to believe the Tripadvisor rating on sheriff Lodge. Our recent experience of staying there runs entirely counter to this assessment. I would rate our stay on Tuesday 31 March 2026 as a 5 in terms of its unpleasantness. The concept of hospitality seems entirely alien to the owner, indeed she seems to believe she is in the hostility industry. We should have read the warning signs before we even arrived. I had contacted the owner by email and phone to say that I had booked the wrong date and asked if it could be moved to a day earlier. No reply or acknowledgement. Silence. On arrival we were ‘greeted’ with stony faced truculence. ‘Talk to the hand’ seemed to be the general tenor. We were then treated to a lengthy dissertation on how she had so much to do that she couldn’t possibly provide breakfast beyond 9.15 (she was so busy making up rooms). Our ‘host’ seemed truly astounded that we would have the impertinence to request some toast at breakfast! You can’t arrive before 4pm and you must be out the door by 10am. Goodness, paying guests are such an inconvenience aren’t they? Take our advice, give this one a miss. Unless of course you have a masochistic streak.

We stayed here for 2 nights and had a lovely weekend. “Ziz” the hotel owner works tirelessly to ensure all her guests are looked after. The rooms are spotless and equipped with everything and more that we needed. As mentioned in most reviews, breakfast was made to order and was exceptional. At breakfast Ziz discussed our plans for the day. She gave us her recommendations and provided us with discount vouchers for attractions and restaurants. My wife left a t-shirt in the room, which Ziz has posted back to us. The hotel is located on quite a steep hill which tests your fitness. We will definitely return in the future.
