Spur of the moment decision to stay overnight in Eau Claire, and unfortunately, it was the UW’s homecoming. This was one of the only choices without breaking the bank. Upon calling to make reservations, the person who answered the phone was friendly and very helpful. We decided to take our chances and walk in instead of booking over the phone (they said the had plenty of rooms). During checkin, the front desk attendant was super friendly, but perhaps tried to help too much, which was not needed. Anyway, there was an issue with checking in which caused the attendant to have to get the (as it turned out) owner of the hotel. He proceeded to absolutely berate her and me in front of a lobby full of people. It was uncomfortable, to say the least. He also made a comment about how she was new (and that’s how he treats her??). Despite the odor of the building, the place was fairly clean and the beds were alright. The hotel was in disrepair (broken or missing phones..coffee pots..signs..). Breakfast was an absolute joke (you’re not supposed to be able to chew your coffee). The selection was terrible and looked old. Speaking to other guests, apparently when new management took over, it went downhill fast. (Again, not surprising considering how new staff is treated). I guess you get what you pay for.. The absolute WORST part of this stay was the staff saying our hotel room numbers out loud in front of a lobby of people. Immediately after warning us to keep our doors locked and make sure we write our license plates number accurately (‘just in case someone breaks into it so they can call us’). I worked as an assistant manager for a huge brand hotel for 5 years and that was the very first thing we trained people on - you DO NOT do that. It’s a tremendous security issue.
