Mawamba Lodge

We really liked Mawamba lounge. It really gives us the “Pura Vide” It’s a special experience - when sleeping at night, we hear the current waves, when waking up in the morning, we hear the bird sounds. The room doesn’t have WiFi, but we actually didn’t mind (as we could really be relaxed during the stay). It is close to the town, and have a natural path walking to town.
Terrazas del Caribe Hotel

The entire hotel is on a small piece of land and crowded together so if this isnt your style then its not for you. It seems the locals come in for a long weekend to enjoy the area so it can get a bit crowed on the weekends, but during the week it was super quiet. I see the the quality slowly going down hill. I like to give my criticism before I leave to what needs attention and when I mentioned the critters in the ceiling that wakes us at 4am (every morning!) and the fighting of them in the evening, my words were by passed with ”we are in the jungle, we do have critters”. I cant imagine the smell and damage that will happen in time. The ceiling also leaked water. We had 4 different spots that had constant water coming in. One leak was over our bed. I cant imagine someone else never brought that up! It rained 3 out of our 5 day stay. I watched one of their helpers paint white around the spa that overflows into the pool and he dumped paint in the water. He didn't think that paint is toxic. When we swam after that there was small speckles of paint floating throughout the whole pool. He literally spilled about 1/2 cup into the water. We stopped using the pool when we noticed it. There were families with children using it every day. Breakfast was not great. That can seriously be improved with a better cook and a better selection wouldn't hurt. We had the buffet once during our stay which was adequate, 4 mornings we ordered off a limited menu. Walk to the main road took about 15 to 20 minutes so we rented a scooter. Free covered parking is a plus! The area is nice. Go south, its much more beautiful! On the plus side of this hotel, the service was fantastic. All the help was extremely nice and would go out of their way for you. Limited English is spoken but they work with you. But again, we should probably know Spanish since we are in their country. Katherine is amazing. Very friendly and helpful. Overall, all this information is for you! Me and my husband loved the place and since we travel a lot, these things are minimal to us. The only thing I didnt like was all the rain but rain makes beauty! The scenery on this side of Costa Rica is amazing!
Sea Towers Hotel

Sea Towers is located on a quiet street only 5 minutes stroll from the hustle and bustle of Puerto Viejo. The rooms are spacious, and some have a mini fridge. The beds are comfy, with plenty of pillows. Breakfast is included, and absolutely delicious! Healthy, filling, and lots of coffee. We booked for 5 nights, and then we're able to leave our luggage at Sea Towers whilst we went to Bocas Del Toro for a few days. We then stayed one more night upon our return. Karen and her team were lovely, and we enjoyed our stay!
Cabinas Popular

Worked out great for us. Best deal we could find on the net, so we booked two nights. When we got here we looked around and it was still the best we could find, so we booked five more nights. This is right in town and two blocks from the beach. But if you need AC, you need to keep looking, to pay more, and to stay outside of town.
Playa 506 Beachfront Hostel

First experience in a ”hostel” and this was much nicer than I imagined. From the very beginning, you check in with Alejandra who welcomes you with open arms. I had a private room which was wonderful for $100 a night... included a very nice walkin shower and AC. I stayed 4 nights. Food and service wonderful. At the bar / restaurant, Leandro and Selena are always eager to help. Absolutely love them. I'm 36 and didn't think hostels were for me, but this one was generally quiet and the management really cares how your stay is going. Feels like home. Can't wait to come back next May!
Atlantida Lodge Cahuita

Nicely laid out site with individual chalets. Situated just over a small road from the beach the location is very good. The hotel bar/snack bar faces the beach and there is a small seating area overlooking the beach where you can have drinks. It is around 20 minute walk into town and 30 minutes to the national park and that beach. The hotel pool is very nice and the restaurant overlooks this, where you have breakfast. Our room had a terrace overlooking the garden with seats and a hammock. There were two double beds and adequate room, however, no hairdryer or safe. However, there was an issue with electrics as when I pulled my plug out of the wall the socket came with it, it wasn't even fixed to the wall! Breakfast was reasonable, buffet style with a lady cooking excellent fried eggs to roder. Staff were friendly and helpful. It is around 20 minute walk into town and 30 minutes to the national park and that beach. There are a few restaurants nearby for the evening if you don't want to venture into town.

Villas del Caribe

I can’t say enough nice things about this place. I went to Costa Rica 3 times in 2021 and stayed here every time. First of all if you are one of those people looking for a for a 5 star chain hotel with a 50’ tv. This is not the place for you. This hotel is directly on the beach which is rare in PV. The rooms are spacious and clean. They have a little kitchenette with a refrigerator and toaster oven. There is a small tv in each room but I have actually never turned it on. The king bed is actually bigger than a king and there is a small pull out couch as well. There is a big balcony with a a shower to rinse off with when you come back from the beach. The landscaping is great and there is a ton of wildlife on property. Even a few chickens. The WiFi works great and I even had a few business conference calls there. Your reservation includes breakfast which is amazing. They have several options to include friut, eggs, rice and beans and plantains. They have fresh bread delivered daily and the local jams and honey are amazing. There is also a restaurant next door. Owned by the hotel that has more high end food that is really good. The staff is amazing. If your Spanish isn’t good they all speak English as well. There is a little store across the street in case you need anything. As other’s have mention it is a few miles from Puerto Viejo but is is an easy bike ride. I typically rent a scooter and they deliver it to the hotel for me so it is there waiting when I get there. You can walk from the hotel to several other beaches nearby which is really nice. They have a nighttime security guard who is very active and walks the property along with security cameras. There is plenty of parking and they just installed a arm gate recently which is nice. There is free coffee all day by the reception desk. There is also a pool and jacuzzi. I have actually never used them but they are decent.
