The location is the best value adding item to this hotel, they only offered limited room cleaning so it may take a while to adjust if you are international travellers. Having the microwave and washing machine in the room is another key advantage of this hotel, overall I will say this is one of the best options in Takayama. Oh they also have free water machines every floor so you can save up buying bottles from convenient stores.
This was one of my best stays in Japan. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, and the price was very affordable.
The hotel is very conveniently located, only about a 2-minute walk from both the train station and the bus station. The lobby is spacious and beautifully designed, and there is also a comfortable dining area where guests can enjoy complimentary coffee in the afternoon.
The room I received was quite spacious by Japanese standards. It had two super single beds and an L-shaped couch, with plenty of space to open my suitcase easily. The bathroom was also larger than those in my previous hotels, with a full-size bathtub which made it very comfortable.
It’s a shame that I only stayed for one night. I definitely should have stayed longer because the room was so comfortable.
Thank you Chisun Grand Takayama for your wonderful hospitality. I will definitely come back again. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Takayama.
Stayed in a double room for one night in April 2025
[Good points]
- Well-equipped bathing facilities
- Massage chairs available for free
[Points to note]
- The hotel is visible from JR Gifu Station, but it is a little far away

Dormy Inn hotels have a wide range of bathing facilities, so you can use them with peace of mind. I was tired from traveling, so I was grateful to be able to use the massage chair for free for 15 minutes after bathing.
The third time staying in this hotel over the past 5 years. Disappointingly, no improvement was seen, particularly the quality of food presumably to be of high quality for luxurious rooms with private onsen. Routinized Japanese Haute cuisine with no surprise, four small pieces of signature Hida wagyu could only be seen as a decoration. Yet the price was relatively high with over five hundred US dollars for a two-person one night stay (breakfast and dinner included). The service, the food, the environment, etc. require considerable improvement.
Suyu Soup Joy Houpu Hotel is really suitable for self-driving people, and the price is a few flat in non-peak season, which is a good choice for cost-effectiveness in high mountain areas. The location of the hotel is convenient. It is good to drive to Takayama Old Street and take a ride to the Highlands. After putting down the car, you can easily walk to the station and the surrounding restaurants. It is suitable to go to the Highlands tomorrow morning.
I live in a tatami Japanese-style room. It is really big. 3 people can walk around at will. It is comfortable to open the luggage. There is a Japanese-style cabinet with the window sill. It has a feeling of sitting in the tea. The interior is clean and simple.
The focus is on ”one berth and two meals”, and I think the quality of the food is a bit high. The dinner is a Japanese-style banquet. The dishes will not be gorgeous to burst, but the ingredients are fresh and the taste will not be sloppy. Seafood, roast fish, fried food are all in place. It is easy to eat and satisfy. Breakfast is a fixed meal, with rice, miso soup, fish, side dishes, eggs, etc., simple but a few intentions, completely enough to replenish energy before going to the highlands early in the morning.
One of the best I have experienced with ryokan staying. I love a small hotel/inn as it is not crowded. This place answers my expectations.
Its location is a bit far off but it is not an issue. It is accessible by public bus from Takayama. Each room has private onsen. It also has 2 outdoor, private onsen on first-come-first-serve basis. There are also public baths for male and female.
Room was in good condition. Bathroom is a bit small for me. Only complaint I would have was foot step noise from the room on upper floor. Very annoyed.
Food was great. I stayed 2 nights, the hotel provided 2 different types of food - appreciated.
Highway recommended.
I love this hotel!
1) The view from the hotel is so beautiful. Even inside the Onsen.
2) The customer service is very nice. A very relaxing place.
3) Breakfast is delicious and there is a very nice garden where you can take photos.
Highly recommended.
Very classical house, clean and tidy, and the service is in place. You can see Changliangchuan in the room, with beautiful scenery.
Breakfast is very delicious, very Japanese, summary is very recommended
Wife and I traveling from the USA. We found this place to be ideal for a pre and post Nakasendo trail hike (although the trail itself was not that special). The staff was friendly and spoke English well enough. The on-site onsen (separate sexes) was clean and perfect for after a hard day’s hiking.
Breakfast was fun and a bit of a hurdle if you’ve not had Japanese-style breakfasts.
Hotel decor seemed straight out of the 1960s, but it found it charming.
One suggestion for hotel: list the times of the free shuttles from the train station more prominently on your website.

GGuest UserBefore my trip, I booked a quadruple room at the Suimeikan hotel in Gero, Japan, through Trip.com. The booking confirmation stated '2 floor mattresses,' but the pictures showed two beds. I assumed the room configuration would be two beds and two floor mattresses. However, the front desk assigned me a room with four floor mattresses. I felt this wasn't what I had booked, and after almost an hour of fruitless discussion with the front desk, they insisted this was the room type I reserved. They said if I wanted a room with two beds, it would be considered an upgrade and require an additional payment of 17,600 JPY for two nights, which I obviously couldn't accept. Ultimately, I had to call Trip.com to complain. Trip.com's communication with the hotel also led nowhere, and in the end, Trip.com covered the cost. I really have to praise Trip.com's service here; their response to my complaint was very quick, and their solution after failing to negotiate with the hotel was decisive. I'm very satisfied with that, which is why I typically book all my travel through Trip.com. While their prices might sometimes be slightly higher than other platforms, their after-sales service is absolutely reliable. When issues arise, you realize that this slight premium is definitely worth it.

GGuest UserThe hot spring water was very nice, and it was great that I didn't have to bring a towel from my room.
There was no TV in the sauna room, and no shelves to put personal items like water and towels, so it would have been nice if there were.
Perhaps because it was a weekday, the bath was empty and I was able to warm up at my own pace.
Perhaps because the breakfast venue was a time-selection area, there was no hassle and I was able to enjoy delicious freshly made sweetfish tempura and homemade curry.
GGuest UserA basic hotel with all the necessary amenities for daily use. Ideal for travelers taking the train to/from Ena Station before or after the Nakasendo Trail. The small town offers a pleasant stroll with a few hidden gems to discover. Good for a simple, convenient stay.
