Check in lobby was hard to locate as it was at the side of the hotel block. Upon check in, I was given third floor. When I asked if I could have higher floor as indicated in my booking request, staff said I need to top up. This was clearly upselling. I was not willing as the price for each room was not cheap in the first place. Staff knew that i was aware it was the bottom tier room & mentioned the freebis in the room was npt charged. I was not impressed as I do not come all the way to Penang for some freebies. Hptel staff obviously did not know what hospitality is all about.Entering the room, it was not too bad. When I opened the window, I almost flipped out. It was rubbish (attached a pic). I then confirmed I was given the bottom tier room. Opening the wardrobe, there was a musty oily smell which obviously was not aired for a while. Stay at room was not comfortable. Badly lit and no way to open window to rubbish view. I guess the only good thing was the shuttle to the various shopping/ eating spots. Upon check out, i was asked if stay was good. I indicated to the staff my stay at the hotel was disappointing due to the above reasons. Staff said i could email the hotel in advance in my next visit indicating the reason above. But I will like to tell the management this -- no way am i coming back to this hotel that only know to upsell & missing out on what true hospitality means. There are hotels out there that offer much better services without breaking the bank. Thanks but no thanks.
It is a beachfront hotel. There is a beach that kids can swim and play there . It’s perfect for family. I like sit by the restaurant to watch the sunset and feel relaxed. The restaurant has breakfast but not variable enough. Beside has a friendly swimming pool for kids . There is a gym next to the pool. It is sea view gym but the equipment in there is not many choices. The hillside room is spacious and clean. But it is near to main road so you can hear the vehicle noise in the middle of night. The staff are very friendly and nice. If you like to eat the local food, there is a local food court in walking distance. There is variety of choices and delicious.
Pros:
Great location – very convenient, with plenty of restaurants and a supermarket within walking distance. The hotel has a stylish design and the rooms are spacious.
Cons:
Unfortunately, the room did not appear very clean.
The bedding and towels are very old and outdated – they should have been replaced a long time ago.
No lockers at swimming pool.
Overall / Personal opinion:
The location and design are strong points, but the poor cleanliness and outdated linens really let really let the experience down.
I have upgrade my room to 1bedroom suite. My family and I love the room. My kids enjoy the bathtub. Hotel location is good too as it is near to the airport. It only cost me about RM14 by taking grab from hotel to airport. Will definitely book again..
Overall, it was an enjoyable stay. The property is clean and conveniently located—within about a 30-minute drive to town if you have a car. There is a small, quiet beach that is suitable for young children, which we appreciated. The breakfast spread is not very extensive, but it is sufficient to fill the tummy. We were also pleasantly surprised by the thoughtful birthday decorations, which added a nice personal touch.
That said, there are some areas for improvement. Staff training and consistency could be better, particularly in terms of greeting guests and service responsiveness. For example, I requested ice around 10pm but only received it close to midnight when we were already asleep. Additionally, the kitchen staff at the egg station during breakfast came across as rude, which affected the dining experience.
Overall, it’s a nice place for a one-time stay. While comfortable and pleasant, it didn’t quite create that “must come back again” feeling, as it feels like there are other places that offer a more memorable experience.
everything is ok.. the breakfast food is delicious while eating you can see the sea.. the view is beautiful.. the location is good.. the beach is close to the hotel.. only the cleanliness is a little lacking in the room.. the bed sheet is dirty but a little.. the worst thing is the smell of the pillow is a bit less pleasant.. hope the hotel can make improvements
It is a beach front hotel. The reception staff is friendly and nice. There is a shop opposite the reception . You can buy shop batik clothes, souvenirs, swimsuits and jewellery there. There is a lounge too with open sea view. You can feel relaxed with music and enjoy drinks there. The room is clean and spacious. There is a swimming pool for kids . It is a nice beach for children to play and swim too . Guests can park car in the car park. The is a gym with swimming pool views. But it is small and not lots of equipment. There are some restaurant in walking distance.
The hotel is quite large with convenient parking, and there are many great restaurants nearby. Some attractions are even within walking distance. If I get the chance to visit Penang again, I'll definitely choose to stay here.
The hotel is more than 40 years old and the rumour is tjt a new management has taken over and a major renovation is about to happen in 2026. The only thing we really enjoyed was the view from the rooms overlooking the sea and the Penang bridge. We were here becuase we attended a wedding and wanted the convenience but the Banquet team did not provide us with the best service for the event area and we have sent a separate email to address that.
We stayed in G Hotel Kelawai for 5 nights. The hotel is between two shopping malls - Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon. Excellent location. Another hotel nearby (about 400m) is G Hotel Gurney. Both the hotels' guests are given the option to use each other's facilities and guests are given the flexibility to have their breakfast at either hotel without any advanced notice. By the way, G Hotel Gurney is the older hotel and is directly connected to Gurney Plaza, whereas G Hotel Kelawai is less crowded and quieter, which we liked. The breakfast variety is acceptable for guests who are on a short stay. Out of curiosity, we wanted to try out the breakfast at G Hotel Gurney but were prevented from doing so because of the heavy rain. Upon request, hotel guests can commute between the two by the hotels' buggy. The 25-m swimming pool and gym in Kelawai were hardly used. Clean and well-maintained rooms.

GGuest User-Love the room - but I found used dirty bottle in the kitchen cardboard. Other than that the room is perfect, they light up free candle to smell nice daily and the room is spacious with good view and bathtub
-The grill seafood dinner buffet is a huge disappointment. The seafood is not fresh at all and they are super small, the oyster is like the size of my pinky nail. I rather you charge a more premium price and give me better quality seafood, I absolutely do not recommend the buffet
SSkumar1973Trip.com should have highlighted that on the day we checked in there was a fire drill!
We could jot sleep or rest after our long drive to the hotel. Rooms very old and outdated. Bathroom was small, the bidet was on the wrong side of the toilet.
Air-conditioning was not working! Maintenance had to chg the filter but still it was bad.
Room slippers was the worst, rooms carpet was coming off the metal ***** almost cut my feet.
Breakfast and the staff was a plus, but overall very noisy the room, thet need to call the pest control, I think rats running in the vents!! Great free parking but you have to take a long drive back to the lobby, a huge turn around from the parking... bad experience overall.
__WeChat26423****The hotel environment is great, even more impressive than the Shangri-La Golden Sands next door. The hotel restaurant is also good, reasonably priced with generous portions. I especially liked the Penang curry noodles. I had an early flight when checking out, and the hotel prepared a packed breakfast, including coffee and tea. Unfortunately, the taxi driver wouldn't let me bring the coffee on board, fearing spills. It's a shame; it would have been perfect if the hotel could provide coffee takeout bags.
GGuest UserOverall we are satisfied with our stay, the room is big. Cons - basin located outside of the toilet and no handwash provided, it is inconvenient for us. Also, we never expect we will be charged for RM10 per day for parking. Pros - the hotel is quite Instagrammable and good to have simple kids play room. Funny fact - hotel will give free drinks everyday but you need to redeem the voucher at the reception EVERYDAY, it is really funny, why don’t just give a total vouchers and state the day there?

Mmijoe79Had a great stay at Crowne Plaza Penang. The hotel was comfortable and clean, and the staff were very helpful. Special thanks to the team for assisting me with a tyre replacement during my stay — truly appreciated their quick support and professionalism. Would definitely stay here again

YYatie.OthmanThis was my 2nd time here, thanks to the kind receptionist cos my room was upgraded to sea view level, my kids were so happy and really enjoyed the slides and mini water park, i personally love the breathtaking view from the hotel room and the sea view , breakfast was great, ample of car parking, for sure i will come again with my family.
