Xi'an Metro is one of the main ways to get around the city, with a network of 12 metro lines covering around 422 kilometres (262 miles) and more than 200 stations. The network connects central Xi'an with major residential and commercial areas, railway stations and the airport, making it a convenient option for both locals and visitors. The first metro line, Line 2, opened in 2011, and the network has continued to expand in recent years.
Several lines are particularly useful for travellers. Line 2 runs through central Xi'an and stops near the Bell Tower, Yongning Gate and Xiaozhai, while Lines 3 and 4 provide convenient access to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and surrounding Tang Dynasty attractions. Line 9 connects Fangzhicheng with the Lintong area, making it useful for trips towards Huaqing Palace and the Terracotta Warriors area. Xi'an Metro is a convenient way to get around the city, with several lines connecting major attractions, railway stations and transport hubs. For visitors, Lines 2, 3, 4, 9 and 14 are particularly useful.
Most Xi'an Metro lines generally operate from around 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM, although the exact first and last train times vary by line and direction. Check the station signs or official metro information for the latest times before travelling.

The Xi'an Metro is brilliant because it's very affordable. Navigating the city via this network is exceptionally budget-friendly. It's incredibly cheap compared to what you'd pay in London.

If you have Alipay set up (highly recommended for any trip to China), this is by far the most convenient option. No cash, no tokens—just scan and go.
To set it up: open Alipay → go to "Transport" → switch to "Metro" → get the "Xi'an Electronic Metro Card". That's it!
Scan the QR code at the entry and exit gates. The fare is automatically deducted after your journey. It works on buses too!
Single Journey Tokens

Riding the Xi'an Metro is simple. Follow these steps to get around the city:

Useful Tips for Using the Xi'an Metro
- Try to avoid travelling during peak hours. Weekday mornings between 7:30 and 9:00, and evenings from 5:30 to 7:30, can get incredibly busy.
- Make sure you choose the right exit when you're at a large station. These stations have plenty of exits, so check the map to see which one is closest to where you want to go.
- If you're using Alipay or the metro app to pay for your journey, make sure your phone is charged.
- Just a heads-up: eating and drinking aren't allowed on the trains, so be sure to finish your snacks before you hop on board!

First, the good points: The hotel's location is excellent, right by the Bell and Drum Towers, which is very lively and convenient, especially being near the H exit of the subway. The service is definitely the highlight; everyone is incredibly polite, enthusiastic, and attentive to every request. The daily mini-bar drinks and afternoon tea are lovely touches that deserve high praise. Now for the room: it's advertised as 35 square meters, but it honestly doesn't feel that big; it's a bit small, typical for a Huazhu property. The bathroom and toilet doors are semi-transparent, which could be a bit awkward if you're staying for a business trip. The toilet flush is incredibly loud, even more so at night. As for breakfast, the variety is decent, but many of the dishes and bowls were not clean – I even took photos, and this really shouldn't be happening every day. The restaurant service was good, but the staff tend to speak quite loudly, which feels a bit inappropriate. I won't comment on the airport pick-up service as there were many restrictions. Overall, if you don't have high expectations for the facilities, it's definitely a place worth staying, because the location and service are genuinely excellent. Our overall stay was very pleasant, and I'd like to extend a special thanks to the front desk staff and Auntie Yan, the housekeeper on the 6th floor. With the continuous high temperatures in Xi'an, our room's daily supplies were used up quickly. After I briefly mentioned needing more bath towels to Auntie Yan, she quietly and proactively added two fresh towels to our room every day. When we ran into her before checking out, she greeted us warmly, offered us pre-prepared ice water, and reminded us to keep the air conditioning on. Her attention to detail and genuine sincerity made her service incredibly heartwarming, truly reflecting the warmth of the East House Hotel.
However, the hotel's breakfast restaurant experience could use some improvement. The auntie at the noodle station seemed to have a poor sense of hygiene; she used gloves that had handled raw eggs to directly touch the serving bowls. This hotel is absolutely worth a special mention! First off, the location is excellent, with convenient transport links. The accompanying garden is truly unique in Xi'an. The public areas are grand and spacious, and even though it's not a tall building, it has four elevators. Our room itself was fantastic – great size, layout, natural light, and a lovely view, truly feeling like a suite.
But the most outstanding highlight is their service. From the doormen and front desk to housekeeping, everyone was incredibly polite and helpful. Any request we had was addressed immediately. We had arranged for a twin bed setup beforehand, and it was all ready when we arrived, which was very thoughtful!
Specifically, on our last day, our museum plans changed, and we couldn't get back to the hotel in time for checkout. We spoke to the front desk, and they graciously extended our checkout time on two separate occasions.

We chose Grand Barony Hotel Xi'an 🏨 for our trip, and overall it was good.
The location is excellent, right next to the subway 🚇, making transportation very convenient. The scenic rooms offer views of Yongning Gate City Wall, and downstairs are famous shopping areas like Hopson One and Wangfujing.
Upon check-in, the room wasn't ready at 3 PM and required another 40-minute wait. The hotel kindly upgraded our room, but I suggest the front desk adds more staff 🙎 during peak weekend check-in times.
The hotel's design features a corridor-style architecture, which I heard won a Luban Award. While some people like this layout, I personally found the dimly lit public areas in the evening a bit depressing.
The breakfast was absolutely fantastic, a blend of Chinese and Western dishes with a wide variety. The coffee ☕️ was good, and there were many Xi'an local specialties, with the Roujiamo 🥙 being particularly delicious 😋.
The service was also good. It's an older hotel, but it was kept quite clean. The soundproofing was average.

After much deliberation for this trip, I chose The Westin Hotel. It's conveniently located next to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Grand Tang Dynasty Everbright City is within walking distance. The overall design features Tang Dynasty-style courtyards, with a grand lobby exuding ancient charm. The guest rooms are spacious and comfortable, and some even offer views of the pagoda's night scenery. The hotel boasts a full range of facilities, including a swimming pool and a gym. Breakfast offers a wide variety of choices, with many local Xi'an flavors to sample. During the summer, it was noticeable that the hotel was quite busy, with the restaurant usually full between 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM. Since the hotel opened quite a while ago, some facilities show their age slightly, but overall, it's clean and well-maintained.
Upon check-in, the hotel provided complimentary tickets to the Qujiang Art Museum, which is directly accessible via an elevator from the hotel lobby. We ended up choosing this hotel and were absolutely delighted! Upon check-in, they gave our two kids adorable raccoon plushies and a generous supply of fruits, snacks, and drinks. The hotel might be a bit older, but it feels luxurious and grand, not old at all. The bed was huge, and there were plenty of mirrors, which was great for getting ready. Qujiang Exhibition Area Xi'an|6.35km from city centre
This was the first hotel where I stayed for five consecutive nights. I'd go to Mount Hua and Xianyang during the day and return here in the evenings. Even though the hotel has been open for over ten years, the black mahogany decor in the rooms is still very well maintained. The huge lobby is incredibly grand; the only other hotel I've stayed in that can compare is the Zhongwu Hotel. The hotel's breakfast truly deserves a mention – it's incredibly varied, and the quality is excellent. They offer local specialties like 'Youpo Mian' (oil-splashed noodles) and 'Roujiamo' (Chinese hamburger), which taste just as good as what you'd find in a specialized restaurant. The attached Spanish restaurant is also authentically styled. The hotel service was great too; a minor issue upon check-in was resolved quickly, and they even gave me an extra breakfast. The hotel environment is also fantastic, with a resort-style garden. The back exit leads directly to the Furong Xintiandi commercial complex, and the front exit opens to Qujiang Relic Park, which is lovely for an morning stroll. It's also not far from the Tang Paradise and the Grand Tang Everbright City. For other destinations, there are subway and bus stations near the hotel. The only downside was that the TV signal wasn't great, with only a few channels working properly. We booked a room with a floor-to-ceiling window, and when you open the curtains, you can see the Xi'an city wall – the ancient city's scenery is completely breathtaking, creating an incredible atmosphere. The room was spacious and spotless, the bedding was soft, and the soundproofing was good. After a day of exploring, we could really get some solid rest. There was 24-hour hot water, comprehensive toiletries, and all the facilities were well-maintained. The buffet breakfast offered a rich variety, with both local specialties and Chinese/Western simple meals, and it all tasted great. The hotel also has free parking, which is a big plus for those driving.
