Iowa House

Ames|2.92km from Schilletter Village
I stayed here on October 27, 2019 with my son when we went to Ames for a tour of Iowa State. Location was close to campus and they advertised wonderful homemade breakfast. I even spoke to the manager ahead of time to make sure they could meet my son's dietary restrictions. When we went down for breakfast in the morning, no one from the hotel was there. The other guests and I waited for a while, tried calling the hotel number, but there was no answer. (We actually heard it ringing at the front reception area, but there was no staff in the building). While we were on the university tour, I received a voicemail message (which I still have) from Noah, the manager who apologized and stated that they were offering each of us 50% off on our next two stays. He stated that he would keep a list of our names and I should call, rather than book online, and he would be sure to give the discount. Well, my son decided not to enroll at Iowa State, so we had no reason to return to Ames. I thought about calling to request some money back, instead of the discount that I was not likely to ever use, but I thought that would be a hardship for a small business, and I didn't want to be ”that person,” so I let it go. I guess it doesn't pay to be nice. Well, now that my daughter is considering Iowa State, I called to reserve a room with my discount. They refuse to honor it or to offer any sort of discount at all. First, she said it was because Noah is not there anymore and they cannot find the list (but she was able to verify my prior stay). I offered to play the voice mail message that I still have. Then, the reason she gave is that she never would have resolved it that way. This leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. Too bad for them - we are going down on a Sunday night and the place will likely be mostly empty. If my daughter does end up going to Iowa State, we'll certainly never stay here.

When we arrived, there was no one at the front desk for quite awhile. Long enough that we shouted out for someone. My room was missing the closet door and had a light bulb out above the sink. The air conditioner quit working in the middle of the night. The next day we went down to breakfast at 7:00 a.m. because we had a conference to attend by 8:00 a.m. The man taking our order told us the cook was detained. I explained that we had a deadline and if we couldn't get breakfast before that time, we would go elsewhere. He assured us the cook would be there soon and gave us a cold stale pastry. We had a cup of coffee and waited. After we couldn't wait any longer for breakfast we left. I reported the light bulb out and the A/C not working to the front desk before leaving. When we arrived back to the room, the A/C appeared to be working, but the light bulb was still out. In the middle of the night the A/C quit working again. Some of the staff were doing their jobs. Others were not. I'm a City Clerk and we have a conference in Ames every July. We will not be back.

We stayed at several hotels on our 7 day road trip. Super 8 Ames was among one of our favorites! The room was nice and big, plenty of amenities. We enjoyed the local resources. The front desk attendants gave excellent recommendations for places to go sight seeing. I've put this location in my phone as a favorite place to stay.

The environment is very good, the traffic is very convenient, that is, there is no place to eat at night, the hotel bar is closed at 9 o'clock. There is no place to drink at night. There is a laundry on the second floor of the hotel, which is very, very convenient and easy to use. After washing clothes and drying, you don't have to dry them anymore. 1.25 US dollar wash one cylinder, 1.25 US dollar drying.

Not bad, mainly because the location is better. The facilities are relatively old and the overall conditions are average. It is on the edge of Duff Ave, not far from the supermarket, and there is a panda restaurant nearby.
Fairfield Inn & Suites Ames

Nice mid-priced hotel with everything you need with free breakfast (nothing special on the breakfast menu), and in-room amenities like a coffee maker, fridge (with freezer compartment) and microwave. There's a pool and exercise room. Plenty of handy parking. I find the wall of the hotel a bit thin - I can hear the next room's TV and talking. A couple frustrating things. They will provide daily room service and when I checked in they asked if I wanted daily service or not. I said no - I do not want my room serviced, and thus left things out in my room of value. When I came back someone had been in my room. I was not happy. There was no ”do not disturb” sign in my room. Also the iron did not work properly - no steam and there was only one pant hanger in my room. Still an average place to stay.

The room was very clean. The beds and pillows were comfortable. The hotel was very full, so we did hear a small amount of noise, but nothing bothersome. The sink area is pretty small outside the toilet and shower room, so if anyone was at the sink, they had to move for that door into the toilet and shower room to open. There was a large window seat. The breakfast was standard fare -- waffles, juice, pastries, cold hard-boiled eggs, breads, bananas, cereal, milk. Also coffee and tea, which was English Breakfast tea, a nice touch. The staff was friendly. The only thing we didn't like was that the air conditioner cycled off and on, but it was quieter than some others.
