My husband and I are frequent travelers to the Maldives. It is our 'go to" place for rejuvenation, pampering, scuba diving and snorkeling. We live in California, so it is a quite a flight for us, but it has always been worth the trip. Having stayed in a number of luxury resorts, this was my first time at Vakkuru. WOW!!! Is all I can say. It surpassed my (admittedly) very high expectations. I stayed in an over water villa, which was completely private and had gorgeous sunset views. The villas are spacious and well appointed. You wake up every morning to an uninterrupted view of the Indian ocean and feel that you are on your own private island. My villa did not have a pool, but I didn't need it. I walked right down the steps to the warm Indian ocean and saw every type of beautiful fish imaginable. I could swim easily to the house reef and blue hole, and had the good fortune to swim with turtles, reef sharks and rays. But what really sets Vakkaru above every other luxury resort is the phenomenal level of service, and the five restaurants that cater to every dietary taste and need. This is quite extraordinary for a resort of its size. The excellence in food and service starts at the top and I must give full credit to Jameel, the Executive Director of Food and Beverage, who somehow manages five world class restaurants on a remote island with calm efficiency, friendliness, and flexibility. His staff clearly love and respect him; and he manages to walk around to meet all the guests on a regular basis. I am a vegetarian and Jameel came to talk to me on my first morning to see what I would like to eat and where. There was one restaurant, Ono, which specializes in the South and Southeast Asian cuisine that I love. He offered to have whatever food I wanted from the Ono menu (or any other menu) delivered to whichever restaurant I chose! I stayed for 11 days and was able to sample all the various cuisines. My favorite restaurant for ambience was Vakku, where you could sit on the beach front, drink cocktails, and watch the sunset, surrounded by island breezes and the beautiful melodies of an eastern European singer. Often there was even a remarkable light show. I also want to recognize Chillu, the manager of Amanay, which is the restaurant that serves breakfasts. Everyday, he came to ask if I wanted something specially made for breakfast the next day and he arranged a delectable variety of my favorite foods, all eaten on the beach front. The staff were amazing and it is difficult to mention all their names here. But I must end with the star of the show-Adel my private butler. His attention and care made my stay truly spectacular. I was traveling alone this time, and Adel made sure that I was pampered and well looked after. He arranged every activity I mentioned to him, including adding me to a fully booked tour to snorkel with Manta Rays - an unforgettable experience. I also scuba dive, and especially want to recognize Mahmoud and Shareef, wh
