Best Hotels in Matola, Mozambique

The attitude and professionalism of the reception would have gone a long way towards making us feel welcome upon arrival (notwithstanding the state of the room and the missing advertised amenities). The receptionist tried to cheat us out of additional money because we could not produce a booking confirmation with the amount in the local MZN currency (our booking was done in ZAR). But the worst was the state of the room. It clearly had not been used in a while and nobody tried to prepare it for new guests. The room was filthy... We found huge dead roaches (clearly from some tind of pesticide they have been using). We could hear the live roaches (or something even worse) running in the skirting at night. The bathroom (and the whole room, in general) did not look like it had been cleaned since the last guest - there were dried-up stains on the bathroom floor, shower, etc. There was only one set of ”clean” towels (which we were too afraid to use), and a number of the advertised amenities simply did not exist or were not available (we were told that the ”free wi-fi” had not worked in months. We had paid for breakfast to be included during our 2-day stay, but we could not bring ourselves to even consider eating their food - I shudder to think what the state of the kitchen much be like.

Affordable, good quality and cheap, suitable for business trips, not suitable for tourism, transportation is OK Wifi network is general, it may be because the distance is too far, the power was stopped many times on Sunday night, the experience was not good

Let's be clear up front: this isn't a European five-star hotel. But what it is, is a neat and clean place to stay if you're in town for business. It's fairly close to the airport and city centre, and has a decent bar to have a couple of drinks and meet people. Dinner was an unexpected highlight: it was a fixed buffet, instead of a la carte, but the baked whole fish with boiled potatoes and vegetables was one of the best things I've eaten in a long time.

The place was nice comfortable, the guy at reception is really nice and helpful. Location if you're looking to be in the downtown hustle and bustle area is key. The only bad experience was the cleaning stuff searching through my stuff and making it obvious that someone was looking for cash coz my passport was not taken, so if management can address this with the cleaning team.

My wife and I stayed 3 nights, arriving at 2PM with a rental car and parking in front. A nice English-speaking receptionist copied my passport, as I signed an entry sheet, then presented the key cards. After parking in their secure lot, we took one of the 2 elevators to the 1st floor. Wood tiled room #116 opened to a fully outfitted bathroom with a tile shower, followed by a refer, safe and coffee station, a comfortable but small double bed facing a satellite TV(Al Jezzara, BBC or CNN, 5 sports, Disney, Discovery + 10 more channels), then desk and chair. A large window opened to planted palms. While the room is small it is ideally designed with quiet AC, constant bathroom exhaust, good secure WIFI and 2 outlet stations. The serviced 6:30AM lobby breakfast was excellent; juices, fruit, yogurt, eggs, hot and cold meats, cheese, breads/jams, muffins and coffee machine choices. This new 125 room hotel connects to the Baia Mall and overlooks the sea.

Booked in by my company on a layover in Maputo. When we checked in we were told the elevator was broken and our rooms were on the 11th floor !! Room was was very shabby. Broken window, mould in the bathroom, broken wall sockets NO toilet paper. Not worth the $83 charged for the over night stay and in fact would never stay here again. WiFi was terrible and hardly able to connect. Would not recommend this place, nothing in this place relates to VIP !!! Avoid it.

The hotel is 8 kilometers from the airport ✈️, 1.5 kilometers from the Maputo train station. 500 meters from the seaside, you can see the sea on the hotel balcony. There is a good Japanese restaurant on foot 450 meters away. Try it. 1200 Mo coin. Eat sushi casually.

I had a wonderful stay in Montebelo Indy Maputo Congress Hotel. It is like living in a nice and quite village in the major city Maputo. Although the gym and the pool were closed due to Covid restrictions, the hotel succeeded in maintaining some part of their entertainment program: they have a very nice SPA and professional hairdresser services with friendly personnel. Following the Covid measures: I was very comfortable with their hygene policy and the way they put this in practice. Their hygene standards are comparable with or even higher than the ones of a 5 star hotel in Maputo. The hotel also maintains a high level of security, the rooms are nice and well maintained and the breakfast was very good. In short: if I would ever return to Maputo I book again a room in this hotel.

We are on our way back to Southern Sun Maputo for our December 2023 holiday break. We were very fortunate to have chosen this venue for our April 2023 break and have no hesitation in returning. The Hotel is conveniently located and has all the amenities/facilities a couple would want for a romantic break. Business trips included. The Staff and Mangement are friendly and go the extra mile to make your stay comfortable and exciting. Collette and I actually had our planned stay extended twice whilst we were there. We just didn't want to leave. The restaurant is of the highest quality and the food fresh and delicious. The rooms are well equipped, neat and clean. Bed and pillows very comfortable. Management, Mark and John go out of their way to ensure that their guests receive the best service one could ask for. We are excited and look forward to returning and having another romantic holiday. Southern Sun Maputo should definitely be on any Travellers bucket list for a satisfying and memorable stay. Tony & Collette Dalton
