Iriomotejima-Jungle Hotel Painumaya
3.6/521 Reviews
Perfect getaway from Tokyo! Painumaya was an excellent choice as our introduction to Iriomote. The location was excellent: away from other spots on the island, we had an unobstructed view of the Milky Way at night. We could walk across the street to the beach to watch the sunrise. And the hotel is basically in the middle of the jungle so all we heard at night were various animal calls. This isn’t a place to go if you want a bustling nightlife. This is a place to go to get away from it all. We are two native English speakers who live in Tokyo, and we’re vegetarians. We chose this hotel because they were willing to remove meat from the dishes on their menu for us. Not everyone on the staff spoke English, but even those who didn’t did their best to communicate with us using a translation tool. The hotel offered excursions that were non-impact on the environment. We went on the 2 hour trek and canoe trip, and the 1 hour night walk. Both were exceptional, even when we didn’t understand everything being said by our Tourguides. It was all worth it. A few notes about the premises: - the pool is currently closed (Covid) - same for the public bath - the hotel is in the middle of the jungle - if you don’t want insects or lizards in your room you need to keep the balcony door closed. We enjoyed watching the one lizard that found its way in eat all of the flies that had been annoying us. - the hotel is trying to be low impact, and the island is working to eliminate plastic. For this reason there were no free small toiletries: bring your own. Also, they won’t come in and change the bedding and towels unless you ask - to save energy. As we are eco-conscious, we were fine with all of this. Some other guests complained, though. Also: you have to plan how to get there thoroughly: they offer a free shuttle to/from Ohara port but it’s not available all day. Same for the bus. Taxis are limited. Don’t get stranded at the port due to poor planning! We enjoyed every part of our stay with them and will definitely be back with our friends!

I stayed away for 3 nights. Everything is wonderful and I don't know what to write from ...! ① Room spacious 々 It is a separate building. It's still new and has a nice scent of wood. There are two rooms between a tatami room and a board with a sofa, and there are also two porch sides. There is a solid clothesline outside, so you can rest assured that you have a lot of laundry. Please put Sanpin tea and water in the refrigerator every day. Even if I was careful, I would bring fine sand to the room, but I could clean it every day, so every time I returned to the room in the afternoon, the floor was smooth and very comfortable. ② Staff Everyone was friendly and comfortable with a good sense of distance. When I consulted about the amount of children's meals, he was very kind and responded. The night palm crab tour that I suddenly asked for was the best. Go on a pitch-black road in a nice car (!), illuminate the bushes with a flashlight, and there is palm crab! I was also told about the recommended time zone of Condoi Beach, and I have stayed at Taketomi Island many times, but I was very impressed with the first experience. ③ Rice is the best in the morning and at night! !! !! It was a family with plenty of volume and a sense of eating, but it was too much to eat. You can serve ingredients such as 々 seasoning and 々. The content changes every day, and everything from small bowls to main bowls is delicious and it's a waste to forget, but what was particularly impressive was the use of papaya. It can be simmered and simmered. Children want to eat hamburger steak again! They say. What is breakfast today, what is dinner, and children and adults went to the dining room every day looking forward to it. It was too disappointing to go home for 3 nights. I will definitely go again next year!

The room was large and beautiful. The bath is also large and relaxing, and the ceiling is nice to see the beam. The meal is delicious and nothing to say. There is a space where the washing machine is placed and there is a dryer. You can also buy simple souvenirs at the store next to the front desk. You can borrow an umbrella at the front desk when it rains.
HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island

For now, I have been visiting Japan from London to see my family (Tokyo) and I wanted to visit Taketomi Island which I never did before. I am still in the hotel (staying for three nights) and I already have two big complaints. First, when I talk (sitting down on a chair) to the staff member either at the reception or at a villa where I stay at, they kneel down to talk to me. I immediately said to them, ”please don't do so, you are not my servant, have a seat, then please tell me about the hotel”. They were immediately embarrassed and told me, ”no, I must not do it. This is how we should communicate with our guests”. Being served at the hotel should not bring 'hierarchy” between the guests and the staff member. I do not need a servant and I would like to talk to them in productive ways. Then, I could enjoy my stay with them better than being served by the servant who would not be allowed to show their personality. From my point of view, forcing their staff member to kneel down to the guest is to send the wrong message to wrong guests. I am convinced that the management of Hoshinoya company believes, ”This is the Japanese OMOTENASHI and we should show it to the world”. It is wrong. Taketomi Island is a tiny one. Before I arrived there, there were already two big typhoons passing over the island. There are some disadvantages to operate hotels, such as how to appropriately organise the amount of the food and how to avoid the food waste. Maybe, this could be a reason why Hoshinoya Taketomi has only one dining area for all the guests. If you want to eat your dinner at the only dining area, you are forced to book ”Ryukyuu French”, which is not cheap. Do I want to eat French food in Taketomi? No way! Because the hotel is located away from the main street of the island, I wanted to have my first supper in the hotel. I ordered a simple one (which is not cheap either) and expected to be offered a table in the dining room. Then, I was told that I should eat it at the villa where I stay. Really?, although I spent a really good amount of money, I am not allowed to eat my supper in the dining room? Do they inform you of this situation on the website? No. This is NOT the quality of the hospitality when the cost is at such a high level. The young staff members seem to deliver the hospitality for the guests as much as they want. I enjoy talking to them. However, because they are FORCED to follow the manuals, they were panicking when I asked them about something which they are not taught. Sad. Just in case, the villa that I stay in is wonderful, worth paying the cost. However, that's it. I immediately fell in love with Taketomi Island. In a way, it does not show you jaw-dropping nature. However, when I was taking a walk, there were endless singings from birds and insects, with many many flowers and trees. Although it is good to talk to the islanders, I know that they do not do so. It does not mean that they ignore you. They have their own life and I thi

It was my second stay and it was great. I was very satisfied with the number of items and the deliciousness of the private beach breakfast buffet and moving around the hotel using a cart.
HOTEL La Teada Iriomote

It was a hotel with only the name of the resort. The cottage door was at the rental apartment level and the inside was bobobobo. It was a wall to open the window to the south side, and it was dark and had to light the electricity even during the daytime. The next room was the same condition, but there was a large window on the south side. It depends on luck. The west window is not visible outside with a large leaf like a palm, extending upward and not seeing the stars. When I looked for a chair outside to see the stars, I was in front of the window of another room, and I was sorry to use it. The room is large and clean, but the unit bus facilities seem to be quite old. The refrigerator was old enough to think it was a private inn, and it was colored and dirty even if it looked at the year of production, and it was not possible to read at all. The hot spring was not very large and clean. However, there was no air conditioner, and no remote control was found. There is no fan or cold water. You have to take the towel from the room. This time it was a plan with a price, but I couldn't feel the value until I paid. It may be good for those who find value in the southernmost and westernmost hot springs in Japan... Breakfast is small and taste is normal. Although it is written as Japanese style food, there is no bread or cereal except sausage. I can see it if it is a Japanese style inn, but it is a resort hotel ... The employees felt good. There were various resort hotels including overseas, but it was not a hotel that I wanted to recommend for me. The hotel I went afterwards was great because there was little difference in the price...
