Inns in Shanxi, China

The stay was amazing!! The service impecable, location superb and lovely room! The Inn is located on a very central road close to the gate to the ancient city. Even though its very central, the rooms are in a back garden so its very peacefull and quiet. The room was spacious, clean and the bed very comfortable! They even have a small terrace with view of the skyline! But the best part was the service! The person working at the teception supported us with anything we asked, it felt like a piece of authentic chinese hospitality! I can only recommend this beautiful Inn to anyone visiting Pingyao!

The accommodation is absolutely beautiful, with very nice details. They also left us some sweets and tea as a welcome gift, and every day they gave us a large bottle of water. The only thing I didn’t like is that during the day people come to take photos at the property, and there is quite a lot of noise until almost 10pm. Sometimes it can be annoying to hear people taking photos right outside your room. Apart from that, the accommodation is great.

Wow! Just wow! I looked at this place online and I was like I totally love it and I really wanted to stay in the old city as part of the experience of going to Pingyaogucheng. The hosts were super helpful picking me up from the station communicating via the Trip/app so I didn’t have to stress about communication issues. I stayed in a kang room just near the courtyard. It was really comfortable a little chair and table, TV (not that I used it) kettle, private bathroom. It’s really convenient to go to a lot of the central places for sightseeing and also great food and snacks. You can try some homemade alcohol and vinegar - and yes you get a bottle of vinegar to take with you at the end of your stay.

A very pleasant stay at the Pipa Old Inn. A very historical building, though the place is equipped with all necessary modern amenities save for an elevator. Fortunately the staff very helpful assisted us with lugging up our heavy luggage to our room on the 3rd floor. Very beautifully decorated and strategically located in the heart of Datong Ancient City. Very pleasant and helpful staff who helped us plan and arrange our trips around Datong though sadly, they weren't very proficient in English (but that's common in China). Free breakfast was included in our stay and there was a decent spread though the menu didn't change much over our stay there save for one or two vegetable dishes being rotated. Overall definitely worth a return trip and stay in Datong Ancient City.

A truly perfect stay! First, the owner called ahead to give directions. I personally tried it: taking a taxi to the ”Xindongmen” (New East Gate) of the ancient city, then walking straight to the guesthouse without any turns – it was super easy to find, and a 650-meter walk with a suitcase felt manageable. Second, the guesthouse is ideally located near all the main attractions like the Yamen, City God Temple, and South Street. Third, the room I booked, though not large, was very clean and comfortable. There's a bar downstairs, which was lovely for a drink and some music after a long day of sightseeing. Fourth, the owner was incredibly considerate. We were heading out of the ancient city to Shuanglin Temple the next day and needed a late check-out at 12 PM, which they readily agreed to. Finally, we even received a thoughtful farewell gift – I was genuinely touched, thank you. Wishing them all the best! Goodbye, Pingyao!

This place is absolutely wonderful. Centrally located, the building is magnificent and our room was a dream (we were also upgraded and our room was on two levels with a nice balcony and a really spacious living area). Staff was really helpful and kind - they also hired a driver for us since we wanted to visit Hanging Monastery directly from the high speed station, before even checking in at the hotel: they took care perfectly of our necessity and the organisation was flawless. I really recommend this place to anybody! you will not regret it!!!

We traveled as a family of five to Pingyao and stayed three nights at the Jinxuan hotel. The stay was an absolute delight, the hosts are extremely friendly and helpful with everything. They picked us up from the train station which made it very easy to find a place. Jinxuan it’s located in the very heart of Pingyao and everything is easy to reach on foot. The facilities are simple and clean, the rooms are located in a very quiet patio of one of the traditional houses in in Pingyao. We stayed in a duplex room that offered lots of space for a family. The breakfast is traditional Chinese and the hosts spoiled us on the last day with some homegrown corn and tomatoes. If you’re looking for an authentic experience, we can absolutely recommend this place. 

The hotel is located right inside the city walls, the place is gorgeous and great if you want some memorable photos or to just stay in an interesting and different environment. Our only two comments are on the noise, since the place is so pretty, tourists do come for photoshoots at night and it can get a bit loud, but that doesn’t last too late as the lights are turned off before midnight. And secondly, the unless this is something you like, the mattress is extremely firm and it almost feels like you’re sleeping on solid ground. Breakfast is a small and simple buffet, we ate well. The man on staff was very helpful and brought us a heater when the heat wasn’t working in our room. Definitely a place that we’d recommend, you get a lot for the cheap price and for all the issues, the beauty of the place and its location more than makeup for them.

Location was good in general but during night the street from the main street to the hotel was a bit dark, giving us a bit negative impression. The cleanliness of the hotel was good but it could be better. The reason we selected this hotel is decoration of the room like an old Chinese house, and the room was exactly meeting our expectation. The breakfast was fair but it is normal Chinese breakfast and we cannot complain. Considering price we paid, the service and general evaluation was just fair.

The owner and their family were incredibly kind, thoughtful, and attentive. After we took a taxi from the high-speed train station to the city gate, they drove a small electric cart to pick up our luggage (as passengers aren't allowed to ride inside the ancient city). Throughout our stay, they patiently answered any questions we had, many of which weren't even about the accommodation. When it was time to leave, concerned we might miss our train, they not only helped us with our luggage but also hailed a taxi, loaded our bags, and waited for us to get in. As we were traveling with two young children, the owner kept reminding us not to rush, saying that if we could catch the train, great, but if not, it was fine – safety was the priority! After we'd left, the owner even called us, timing it just right, to check on how we were doing. Although our stay in Pingyao was less than 24 hours, we were profoundly touched by their immense warmth. We'll definitely be back next time to truly soak in the experience!
